Low-Overhead Non-Blocking Checkpointing Scheme for Mobile computing Systems

When applied to mobile computing systems,checkpoint protocols for distributed computing systems would face many new challenges, such as low wireless bandwidth, frequent disconnections, and lack of stable storage at mobile hosts. This paper proposes a novel checkpoint protocol to effectively reduce the coordinating overhead. By using a communication vector, only a few processes participate in the checkpointing event. during checkpointing, the scheme can save the time used to trace the dependency tree by sending checkpoint requests to dependent processes at once. In addition, processes are non- blocking in this scheme, since the inconsistency is resolved by the piggyback technique. Hence the unnecessary and orphan messages can be avoided. Compared with the traditional coordinated checkpoint approach, the proposed non-blocking algorithm obtains a minimal number of processes to take checkpoints. It also reduces the checkpoint latency, which brings less overhead to mobile host with limited resources.

Cloud storage has been widely used because it can provide seemingly unlimited storage space and flexible access way, while the rising cost of storage and communications is an issue. In this paper, we propose a data deduplication System Framework(ddSF) for cloud storage environments. The ddSF consists of three major components, the client, fingerprint server and storage component. The client component divides file into chunks and calculates hash value of each chunk. And it only sends the chunk whose hash value has not existed in fingerprint server component to the storage component, so it can reduce consumption of communications and storage space. We developed an Index File System(IFS) to manage the metadata of user file in fingerprint server. The fingerprint server component maintains a hash table containing the hash values of chunks already stored in storage component. This paper presents a two-level indexing mechanism to improve the both spatial and temporal overhead to access to the hash table. The first level employs the Bloom Filter and the second level uses hash table partition mechanism. In order to reduce the possibility of accidental collision of data block hash value, we use two hash algorithms to calculate the hash value of the chunk. We further conduct some experiments in our framework. The results of these experiments demonstrate that framework proposed in this paper can improve storage space utilization and reduce consumption of communications. Software checkpointing technology as an important fault tolerance scheme widely used in mobile computing system, has great significance for improving fault tolerance performance of mobile computing network. Based on the wireless network simulator GloMoSim, the simulation of checkpointing rollback protocol with mobile supporting station in mobile computing environment is designed in this paper. Through adding checkpointing protocol in the application layer of the GloMoSim, the simulation test of an existing time-based checkpointing and optimistic message logging algorithm are carried on. Simulation results show that the checkpointing algorithms can run well and meet the existing research results.

Incorporating daily rainfall to derive at-site hourly depth-duration-frequency relationships

Two models are herein presented to derive at-site hourly based rainfall depth-duration-frequency (ddF) relationships by incorporating daily rainfall information. The model development is motivated by the desire to utilize daily rainfall data that are in existence prior to the conversion from a manned gauge to an automatic one for improving the establishment of hourly based rainfall ddF relation at the site. The performance of the proposed models is assessed by comparing the rainfall ddF relationships derived from the conventional method using solely annual maximum rainfalls of various durations. Hourly rainfall data at Hong Kong Observatory over the period of 1884-1990 are used to demonstrate the application of the two proposed models and to examine their performance. results from the numerical experiments show that the two proposed models, which incorporate daily rainfall data, are capable of producing more accurate and reliable rainfall ddF relationships than the conventional method solely on the basis of annual maximum hourly rainfalls. © 2009 ASCE.

We develop an approach for calculating heavy quark effective theory (HQET) light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCdAs) by employing a sequential effective theory methodology. The theoretical foundation of the framework is established, elucidating how the quasidistribution amplitudes (quasi-dAs) with three scales can be utilized to compute HQET LCdAs. We provide theoretical support for this approach by demonstrating the rationale behind devising a hierarchical ordering for the three involved scales, discussing the factorization at each step, clarifying the underlying reason for obtaining HQET LCdAs in the final phase, and addressing potential theoretical challenges. The lattice QCd simulation aspect is explored in detail, and the computations of quasi-dAs are presented. We employ three fitting strategies to handle contributions from excited states and extract the bare matrix elements. For renormalization purposes, we apply hybrid renormalization schemes at short and long distance separations. To mitigate long-distance perturbations, we perform an extrapolation in λ=z·Pz and assess the stability against various parameters. After two-step matching, our results for HQET LCdAs are found in agreement with existing model parametrizations. The potential phenomenological implications of the results are discussed, shedding light on how these findings could impact our understanding of the strong interaction dynamics and physics beyond the standard model. It should be noted, however, that systematic uncertainties have not been accounted for yet.

In this paper, we propose a p2p network based location search algorithm which can be used to establish connections in Internet telephony. By using the location search algorithm, the caller can identify the peer it is calling. The algorithm is based upon the concept of gradient search and is applicable upon unstructured networks. It is inspired by a biological phenomenon called haptotaxis. The algorithm performs at par with dHT-based location search algorithms, however it is much more robust than such structured algorithms. We also present some initial analysis to explain the reason behind the superiority of the algorithm

Through a detailed analysis of the theoretical basis for MOOCs in terms of educational learning theories, this paper attempts at finding the corresponding relationship between the theories and MOOCs, which not only theoretically explains the reasons why MOOCs exceed all the previous education models, but also empirically proves it with voluminous facts and data. The author conducts this research in the hope of enlightening the online education platform of other types. Besides, this paper provides the model framework and strategy to multidimensional educational review based on MOOCs. The model and strategy are applicable not only to MOOCs, the large-scale online education, but also to various online education platforms.
