Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming one of the key technologies of this century. The majority of results in AI thus far have been achieved using deep neural networks trained with the error backpropagation learning algorithm. However, such an algorithm has always been considered biologically implausible. To this end, recent works have studied learning algorithms for deep neural networks inspired by the neurosciences. One such theory, called predictive coding (PC), has shown promising properties that make it potentially valuable for the machine learning community: it can model information processing in different areas of the brain, can be used in cognitive control and robotics, has a solid mathematical foundation in variational inference, and performs its computations asynchronously. Inspired by such properties, works that propose novel PC-like algorithms are starting to be present in multiple sub-fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence at large. Here, we survey such efforts by first providing a broad overview of the history of PC to provide a common ground for the understanding of the recent developments, then by surveying current efforts and results, and concluding with a large discussion of possible implications and ways forward. MAX CUT in weighted random intersection graphs and discrepancy of sparse random set systems

Let V be a set of n vertices, M a set of m labels, and let R be an m × n matrix of independent Bernoulli random variables with probability of success p;columns of R are incidence vectors of label sets assigned to vertices. A random instance G(V,E,RTR) of the weighted random intersection graph model is constructed by drawing an edge with weight equal to the number of common labels (namely [RTR]v,u) between any two vertices u, v for which this weight is strictly larger than 0. In this paper we study the average case analysis of Weighted Max Cut, assuming the input is a weighted random intersection graph, i.e. given G(V,E,RTR) we wish to find a partition of V into two sets so that the total weight of the edges having exactly one endpoint in each set is maximized. In particular, we initially prove that the weight of a maximum cut of G(V,E,RTR) is concentrated around its expected value, and then show that, when the number of labels is much smaller than the number of vertices (in particular, m = nα, α TR) and the problem of finding a 2-coloring that achieves minimum discrepancy for a set system Σ with incidence matrix R (i.e. minimum imbalance over all sets in Σ). We exploit this connection by proposing a (weak) bipartization algorithm for the case m = n, p = Θ(1)/n that, when it terminates, its output can be used to find a 2-coloring with minimum discrepancy in a set system with incidence matrix R. In fact, with high probability, the latter 2-coloring corresponds to a bipartition with maximum cut-weight in G(V,E,RTR). Dynamic hidden-variable network models

Models of complex networks often incorporate node-intrinsic properties abstracted as hidden variables. The probability of connections in the network is then a function of these variables. Real-world networks evolve over time, and many exhibit dynamics of node characteristics as well as of linking structure. Here we introduce and study natural temporal extensions of static hidden-variable network models with stochastic dynamics of hidden variables and links. The rates of the hidden variable dynamics and link dynamics are controlled by two parameters, and snapshots of networks in the dynamic models may or may not be equivalent to a static model, depending on the location in the parameter phase diagram. We quantify deviations from static-like behavior, and examine the level of structural persistence in the considered models. We explore temporal versions of popular static models with community structure, latent geometry, and degree-heterogeneity. We do not attempt to directly model real networks, but comment on interesting qualitative resemblances, discussing possible extensions, generalizations, and applications. Trained and optimized for typical and fluent speech, speech AI works poorly for people with speech diversities, often interrupting them and misinterpreting their speech. The increasing deployment of speech AI in automated phone menus, AI-conducted job interviews, and everyday devices poses tangible risks to people with speech diversities. To mitigate these risks, this workshop aims to build a multidisciplinary coalition and set the research agenda for fair and accessible speech AI. Bringing together a broad group of academics and practitioners with diverse perspectives, including HCI, AI, and other relevant fields such as disability studies, speech language pathology, and law, this workshop will establish a shared understanding of the technical challenges for fair and accessible speech AI, as well as its ramifications in design, user experience, policy, and society. In addition, the workshop will invite and highlight first-person accounts from people with speech diversities, facilitating direct dialogues and collaboration between speech AI developers and the impacted communities. The key outcomes of this workshop include a summary paper that synthesizes our learnings and outlines the roadmap for improving speech AI for people with speech diversities, as well as a community of scholars, practitioners, activists, and policy makers interested in driving progress in this domain. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This paper studies the discovery of approximate rules in property graphs. We propose a semantically meaningful measure of error for mining graph entity dependencies (GEDs) at almost hold, to tolerate errors and inconsistencies that exist in real-world graphs. We present a new characterisation of GED satisfaction, and devise a depth-first search strategy to traverse the search space of candidate rules efficiently. TOD-CNN: An Effective Convolutional Neural Network for Tiny Object Detection in Sperm Videos

The detection of tiny objects in microscopic videos is a problematic point, especially in large-scale experiments. For tiny objects (such as sperms) in microscopic videos, current detection methods face challenges in fuzzy, irregular, and precise positioning of objects. In contrast, we present a convolutional neural network for tiny object detection (TOD-CNN) with an underlying data set of high-quality sperm microscopic videos (111 videos, > 278,000 annotated objects), and a graphical user interface (GUI) is designed to employ and test the proposed model effectively. TOD-CNN is highly accurate, achieving 85.60% AP50 in the task of real-time sperm detection in microscopic videos. To demonstrate the importance of sperm detection technology in sperm quality analysis, we carry out relevant sperm quality evaluation metrics and compare them with the diagnosis results from medical doctors. © 2022, CC0.

Magnetization switching in polycrystalline Mn3Sn thin film induced by self-generated spin-polarized current

Electrical manipulation of spins is essential to design state-of-the-art spintronic devices and commonly relies on the spin current injected from a second heavy-metal material. The fact that chiral antiferromagnets produce spin current inspires us to explore the magnetization switching of chiral spins using self-generated spin torque. Here, we demonstrate the electric switching of noncollinear antiferromagnetic state in Mn3Sn by observing a crossover from conventional spin-orbit torque to the self-generated spin torque when increasing the MgO thickness in Ta/MgO/Mn3Sn polycrystalline films. The spin current injection from the Ta layer can be controlled and even blocked by varying the MgO thickness, but the switching sustains even at a large MgO thickness. Furthermore, the switching polarity reverses when the MgO thickness exceeds around 3 nm, which cannot be explained by the spin-orbit torque scenario due to spin current injection from the Ta layer. Evident current-induced switching is also observed in MgO/Mn3Sn and Ti/Mn3Sn bilayers, where external injection of spin Hall current to Mn3Sn is negligible. The inter-grain spin-transfer torque induced by spin-polarized current explains the experimental observations. Our findings provide an alternative pathway for electrical manipulation of non-collinear antiferromagnetic state without resorting to the conventional bilayer structure. © 2022, CC BY.

This article presents a time-delayed SIR epidemiological model that has been quantitatively examined. The model incorporates a logistic growth function for the susceptible population, a Crowley-Martin type incidence, and Holling type II treatment rates. We investigated two separate time delays. The first delay refers to the rate at which new infections occur, allowing us to evaluate the impact of the latent period. The second delay relates to the rate of treatment for those who have contracted the infection, which allows us to examine the consequences of postponed access to therapy. The investigation of the steady-state behavior of the model emphasizes two equilibria, namely, the infection-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium. The determination of critical values involves the use of the fundamental reproduction number, denoted R₀, which serves as a predictive measure to determine the potential elimination of a disease within a specific population. Using the fundamental reproduction number, it can be shown that infection-free equilibrium exhibits local asymptotic stability when the value of R₀ is less than 1. In contrast, when R₀ exceeds 1, the infection-free equilibrium becomes unstable in the context of the time-delayed system. Furthermore, an analysis of the steady-state dynamics of the endemic equilibrium indicates the appearance of oscillations and periodic solutions with the Hopf bifurcation for all feasible combinations of two-time delays as the bifurcated parameter. In sensitivity analysis, a sensitivity index is utilized to evaluate the relative modification in the fundamental reproduction number caused by each parameter. In summary, numerical simulations are employed to offer empirical evidence for the theoretical findings. © 2024 The Author(s)
