The paper presents a novel automatic early warning system to remotely monitor areas of archaeological and cultural interest from the risk of fire. Since these areas have been treasured and tended for very long periods of time, they are usually surrounded by old and valuable vegetation or situated close to forest regions, which exposes them to an increased risk of fire. The proposed system takes advantage of recent advances in multi-sensor surveillance technologies, using optical and infrared cameras, wireless sensor networks capable of monitoring different modalities (e.g. temperature and humidity) as well as local weather stations on the deployment site. The signals collected from these sensors are transmitted to a monitoring centre, which employs intelligent computer vision and pattern recognition algorithms as well as data fusion techniques to automatically analyze sensor information. The system is capable of generating automatic warning signals for local authorities whenever a dangerous situation arises, as well as estimating the propagation of the fire based on the fuel model of the area and other important parameters such as wind speed, slope, and aspect of the ground surface.

In this work, we present a concrete framework, based on web services-oriented architecture, for integrating small programmable objects in the web of things. Functionality and data gathered by the Small Programmable Objects (SPO) are exposed using Web Services. Based on this, by exploiting XML encoding, SPO can be comprehensible by any web application. The architecture proposed is focused in providing secure and efficient interoperability between SPO and the web. Additionally, the proposed architecture provides management capabilities for deploying, maintaining and operating SPO applications across multiple networks. We present the multilayer architecture of our system and its implementation, which uses a combination of Java Standard and Micro Editions. Finally, we present a case study presenting our implementation. In this application we use SunSPOTs, which are wireless network motes developed by Sun Microsystems. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper deals with the problem of deploying a team of flying robots to perform surveillance coverage missions over a terrain of arbitrary morphology. In such missions, a key factor for the successful completion is the knowledge of the terrain's morphology. In this paper, we introduce a two-step centralized procedure to align optimally a swarm of flying vehicles for the aforementioned task. Initially, a single robot constructs a map of the area of interest using a novel monocular-vision-based approach. A state-of-the-art visual-SLAM algorithm tracks the pose of the camera while, simultaneously, building an incremental map of the surrounding environment. The map generated is processed and serves as an input in an optimization procedure using the cognitive adaptive methodology initially introduced in [1], [2]. The output of this procedure is the optimal arrangement of the robot team, which maximizes the monitored area. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated using real data collected from aerial robots in different outdoor areas.

Incremental Sheet Forming is an advanced manufacturing technology in the recent years. In a lot of cases the process requires the synchronized cooperation of two machines. The complex operation was modelled in a virtual environment, where the cyber objects were deeply connected with the real objects. The result of this virtual cooperation resulted some cognitive observation that is also published in this paper.

We propose a novel optimization-based paradigm for designing enhanced classifiers. The proposed paradigm allows us to incorporate available prior process knowledge into classifier design, thereby improving the performance of the resulting classifiers. In this work, we focus on dynamical systems that can be represented as finite-state multi-dimensional stochastic processes that possess labeled steady-state distributions. Given prior operational knowledge of the process, our goal is to build a classifier that can accurately label future observations obtained from the steady-state, by utilizing both the available prior knowledge and the training data. Simulation results show that the proposed paradigm yields improved classifiers that outperform traditional classifiers that use only training data.

The prime objective of the Greek School Network (GSN) is the provisioning of a network and services infrastructure for the interconnection of school laboratories of informatics, so that modern educational and pedagogical methods and models can be applied. The GSN is currently delivering a wide range of educational services to users, ranging from forums and instant messaging to video-on-demand and teleconferencing. Managed and operated by a consortium of educational and research public bodies, the network adopts flexible, interoperable, secure solutions in order to construct operational mechanisms for the support of the educational services and considers the open model for service development, deployment, delivery and management. The current paper presents an overview of the service infrastructure constructed to address the problem of delivering catholic educational services across the school domain. It presents some services such as the asynchronous and synchronous tele-education and virtual classroom services and the underlying service layers that provide the infrastructure for user management, security and integration. © 2010 IADIS.

Based on recent advances on convex design for Large-Scale Control Systems (LSCSs) and robust and efficient LSCS self-tuning/adaptation, a methodology is proposed in this paper which aims at providing an integrated LSCS-design, applicable to large-scale systems of arbitrary scale, heterogeneity and complexity and capable of: 1) Providing stable, efficient and arbitrarily-close-to-optimal LSCS performance;2) Being able to incorporate a variety of constraints, including limited control constraints as well as constraints that are nonlinear functions of the system controls and states;3) Being intrinsically self-tunable, able to rapidly and efficiently optimize LSCS performance when short-, medium- or long-time variations affect the large-scale system;4) Achieving the above, while being scalable and modular. The purpose of the present paper is to provide the main features of the proposed control design methodology.

Sensor networks are a sensing, computing and communication infrastructure that are able to observe and respond to phenomena in the natural environment and in our physical and cyber infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a sensor network with mobile and static sensor nodes set-up for performing tasks like sensing a phenomenon or monitoring a region. We investigate how the sensor network performs in the case when the sensor nodes move. We compare the simulation results for two cases: the sensor network with stationary sensor nodes and multi mobile sensor nodes. The simulation results have shown that for the multi mobile sensors, the good put is unstable. The good put of stationary sensors is better than multi mobile sensors, but the consumed energy of multi mobile sensors is better than stationary sensors.

The use of Numerical Control and computers in manufacturing has enabled the development of new sheet forming processes. One of these flexible processes is called Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) in which deformation is localized by the movement of a spherical or flat forming tool. ISF is carried out regularly by a CNC machine tool or by a Robot, which follows a tool-path generated by CAM programs, without the need for costly dies. Despite research progresses in understanding the deformation mechanism in ISF the process still needs a further optimization to guarantee the reliability required for industrial applications. This paper deals with the design of a new smart forming tool, applying FEM modeling and simulation, which is able to measure one of the key process parameters: the sheet thickness during the forming process. The authors analyze the possibility to use a Hall-effect sensor integrated into the forming tool for more precise on-line thickness measurement than what can be found in the literature and first results are reported.

We present in this work the performance evaluation of MPEG-4 video transmission with our proposed single rate multicast protocol named Adaptive Smooth Multicast Protocol (ASMP). ASMP key attributes are: a) adaptive scalability to large sets of receivers, b) TCP-friendly behavior, c) high bandwidth utilization, and finally d) smooth transmission rates which are suitable for multimedia applications. We evaluate the performance of ASMP under an integrated simulation environment which extends ns-2 and Evalvid-ra to the multicast domain with the use of the RTP/RTCP protocols. Simulations conducted under this environment combine the measurements of network-centric along with video quality metrics. This "joint" evaluation process provides a better understanding of the benefits and limitations of any proposed protocol for multimedia data transmission. © 2010 IEEE.
