The Web is overcrowded with news articles, an overwhelming information source both with its amount and diversity. Assigning news articles to similar groups, on the other hand, provides a very powerful data mining and manipulation technique for topic discovery from text documents. In this paper, we are investigating the application of a great spectrum of clustering algorithms, as well as similarity measures, to news articles that originate from the Web and compare their efficiency for use in an online Web news service application. We also examine the effect of preprocessing on clustering. Our experimentation showed that k-means, despite its simplicity, accompanied with preliminary steps for data cleaning and normalizing, gives better aggregate results when it comes to efficiency.

In transparent and translucent wavelength routed optical networks the signal quality degrades due to physical layer impairments while the interference among lightpaths implies that routing decisions for one lightpath affect and are affected by the decisions made for other lightpaths. To establish a lightpath for a new connection two main approaches can be used. The most common approach is to select a lightpath that has acceptable transmission quality under a worst case interference assumption, ensuring that the selected lightpath will not become infeasible due to the possible establishment of future interfering connections. This approach sacrifices candidate path space for a quick and stable lightpath selection, which is appealing from a complexity viewpoint. The second approach is to consider the current network utilization and account for the actual interference among lightpaths, performing a cross layer optimization between the network and physical layers. In this case, however, the algorithm has to check whether the establishment of the new lightpath turns infeasible some of the already established connections. The question that arises is whether the performance benefits that can be achieved through the second approach are worth the added complexity introduced by the cross-layer optimization applied. © 2010 Academy Publisher.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms. © 2010 IEEE.

In this work, we present a concrete framework, based on web services-oriented architecture, for integrating small programmable objects in the web of things. Functionality and data gathered by the Small Programmable Objects (SPO) are exposed using Web Services. Based on this, by exploiting XML encoding, SPO can be comprehensible by any web application. The architecture proposed is focused in providing secure and efficient interoperability between SPO and the web. Additionally, the proposed architecture provides management capabilities for deploying, maintaining and operating SPO applications across multiple networks. We present the multilayer architecture of our system and its implementation, which uses a combination of Java Standard and Micro Editions. Finally, we present a case study presenting our implementation. In this application we use SunSPOTs, which are wireless network motes developed by Sun Microsystems.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cardiac arrhythmia seen in clinical practice. Several therapeutical approaches have been developed to terminate the AF and the effects are evaluated by the reduction of the wavelet number after the treatments. In this paper, the state-space model was developed and applied to estimate the effects of pharmacological therapy on AF. Recordings (224-site bipolar recordings) of plaque electrode arrays placed on the right and left atria of pigs with sustained AF induced by rapid atrial-pacing were used to train and test the state-space models. The cardiac mapping data from five pigs treated with intravenous administration of antiarrhythmia drug, propafenone (PPF), were evaluated. The recordings of cardiac activity before the drug treatment were input to the model and the model output reported the estimated wavelet number of atria after the drug treatment. The results show that the predicting accuracy can reach 90%. It is expected that the developed state-space model can be further extended to assist the clinical staffs to estimate the effects of treatments for the AF patients in the future. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper studies some fundamental properties on signal propagation in one-dimensional cellular neural networks with the antisymmetric template under the assumption that the initial output has only one connected component. A new sufficient condition for the component to propagate without attenuation is derived through theoretical analysis. It is also proved that under the same condition the final output is a black-and-white image having only one black at the right-most pixel, which means that the network can perform connected component detection when the input image has only one connected component. © 2010 IEEE.

Solving the deterministic unit commitment (UC) model may yield the optimal commitment for each unit for a certain condition of the power system. Changing the system condition due to a sudden change or uncertainties may render the obtained solution infeasible or inapplicable to the system under study. This paper presents a fuzzy model to handle uncertainties associated with the UC problem and introduces a methodology based on the Ant Colony Search Algorithm (ACSA) to find a near-optimal solution to the problem. The ACSA is a meta-heuristic technique for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, a class of problems which the UC problem belongs to. The ACSA was inspired by the behavior of real ants that are capable of finding the shortest path from food sources to the nest without using visual cues. The proposed approach uses a fuzzy comparison technique and generates a fuzzy range of the cost that reflects problem uncertainties. Test results on a 10-unit system demonstrate the viability of the proposed technique to solve the UC problem considering uncertainties. ©2010 IEEE.

Mobile ad hoc networks rely on node cooperation to perform and support basic functions like packet forwarding, routing and network management. In general, nodes' misbehaviour can significantly degrade the performance of the network. Cooperation enforcement schemes are seen as a lightweight alternative to conventional security techniques, providing a "softer" security layer to protect basic networking operations. The aim of this paper is to survey representative cooperation enforcement schemes exploiting a reputation system proposed in related research literature. Their distinct features are analyzed and their relative merits and weaknesses are discussed.

Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs) are used to interconnect different processing modules in various parallel systems or on high bandwidth networks. In this paper an integrated performance methodology is presented. A new approximate performance model for self-routing MINs consisting of symmetrical switches which are subject to a backpressure blocking mechanism is analyzed. Based on this, the steady-state distribution of the queue utilization is estimated and then all important performance metrics are calculated. Moreover, a general evaluation factor which helps in choosing a better performance MIN in comparison with other similar MIN architecture specifications is defined. The model was exemplified for the case of symmetrical single- and double-buffered MINs. It provides accurate results and converges very quickly. The obtained results were validated by extensive simulations and were compared to existing related work in the literature. © 2010 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

In this paper, we describe a power management mechanism for wireless video transmission using the TFRC protocol that takes into account feedback about the received video quality and tries to intelligently adapt transmitting power accordingly. The purpose of the mechanism is to utilize TFRC feedback and thus achieve a beneficial balance between the power consumption and the received video quality. We use simulation in order to compare and evaluate our approach.
