An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

In this paper, we present the implementation and analysis of our implemented testbed considering the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET). We investigate the effect of mobility and topology changing in the throughput of MANETs. We study the impact of best-effort traffic for Mesh Topology. Experimental time is 150 seconds. In this work, we consider 6 experimental models and we assess the performance of our testbed in terms of throughput, round trip time and packet loss. From our experiments, we found that the OLSR protocol has a good performance when the source node is moving. However, the performance is not good when the three relay nodes are moving.

The paper presents the main ideas of two Leonardo da Vinci (LdV) projects focused on the vocational training. The selected outputs of these projects are presented in more details. Interference is an issue of outstanding importance for efficient communication in ad-hoc wireless networks. Interference arises due to overlapping transmission power levels of nodes and causes message collisions that require energy-consuming retransmissions. In this work we study algorithms for interference control in ad-hoc wireless networks in the Euclidean space that aim at constructing low-interference network topologies with particular properties preserving network connectivity. We survey relative research work on such algorithms and provide implementations for four such algorithms comparing them on random geometric instances of the problem in the Euclidean space in average-case networks. Our experiments show that our implementations obtain in practice improved performance compared to corresponding theoretical bounds. Our findings confirm that sparse topologies do not automatically imply low interference and, furthermore, imply that a unified model for decreasing simultaneously both edge- and node-interference remains hard to define.

Allowing robots to communicate naturally with humans is an important goal for social robotics. Most approaches have focused on building high-level probabilistic cognitive models. However, research in cognitive science shows that people often build common ground for communication with each other by seeking and providing evidence of understanding through behaviors like mimicry. Predictive State Representations (PSRs) allow one to build explicit, low-level models of the expected outcomes of actions, and are therefore well-suited for tasks that require providing such evidence of understanding. Using human-robot shadow puppetry as a prototype interaction study, we show that PSRs can be used successfully to both model human interactions, and to allow a robot to learn on-line how to engage a human in an interesting interaction.

Achieving fast, precise, and scalable fault localization has long been a highly desired feature in all-optical mesh networks. Monitoring tree (m-tree) is an interesting method that has been introduced as the most general monitoring structure for achieving unambiguous failure localization (UFL). Ideally, with J m-trees one can monitor up to 2 J -1 links when a single failure has to be located. Such a logarithmic behavior has also been observed in numerous case studies of real life network topologies. It is expected that the m-tree framework will lead to a highly scalable link failure monitoring mechanism for not only all-optical mesh networks, but any possible future information system with mesh topologies, such as all-optical mesh networks, touch panels, quantum computing, and VLSI. It is an important task to investigate the extent such an optimal logarithmic behavior may hold, in particular in practically relevant network topologies. As an endeavor toward this goal, the paper investigates the problem by identifying essentially tight logarithmic bounds for two dimensional lattice networks. Experiments are conducted to show the feasibility and performance of the proposed constructions.

This paper deals with the topic of qLPV state-space model based control design in which LMIs are used to optimize the multi-objective control performance. In this paper we investigate how the convex hull of the polytopic model influences the control performance of the LMI based control design. We examine these influences through the controller and observer design of the two dimensional aeroelastic wing's example. First we define various TP type polytopic model representations of a wing section whose vertices define different convex hulls. In the second step we investigate how these models change the control performance.

In this paper, we consider the behavior of a wireless sensor network for TworayGround and Shadowing radio models for the case of mobile event. By means of simulations, we analyse the performance of AODV protocol. In the previous work, we considered that the event node is stationary in the observation field. In this work, we want to investigate how the sensor network performs in the case when the event node moves. The simulation results show that the shadowing phenomena, by destroying the regularity of the network, reduce the mean distance among nodes and at the same time increase the interference level and the latency of packet transmission. We found that for mobile event, the Goodput and routing efficiency of TworayGround is better than Shadowing, but the Depletion of Shadowing is better than TworayGround.

Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder which is associated with disturbed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system dynamics. Estimation of dynamical parameters is an important part of the diagnosis process, and can be performed via a controlled infusion of artificial CSF into the lumbar cavity. Current methods for testing and data analysis are not optimized in any way and may be very inaccurate. Maximizing information and minimizing experiment time are important for accuracy of the diagnosis, efficient use of hospital resources, and minimizing discomfort for the patient. In this paper, we show that a known and proven nonlinear differential equation model of the CSF dynamics can be transformed into a linear time invariant system via a nonlinear change of variables. After this change of variables, the parameter estimation problem becomes a standard system identification problem. We address important issues such as model validation, prefiltering and disturbance modelling. We present experimental results on a phantom, as well as preliminary data from a clinical trial currently in progress.
