In short-term generation unit asset valuation, a decision whether to turn the unit ldquoonrdquo or ldquooffrdquo is relied upon the present realization of electricity and fuel prices. When the electricity and fuel prices are on an indifference locus (IL), the decision made will not effecting the expected profit. Therefore, the identification of ILs is crucial step in unit asset valuation method. A novel least-squares polynomial-based technique to approximate the continuous path of ILs is developed and implemented. By using this technique, the unit asset valuation problem can be solved faster than the standard method without compromising its accuracy. Testing and model verification are performed on actual data of the PJM power market. The results indicate that the proposed technique is effective and efficient while producing significantly accurate results. It reduces the computational burden by more than 245 times and 0.90% error for 2000 simulation times.

In order to make surfing the internet faster, and to save redundant processing load with each request for the same web page, many caching techniques have been developed to reduce latency of retrieving data on World Wide Web. In this paper we will give a quick overview of existing web caching techniques used for dynamic web pages then we will introduce a design and implementation model that take advantage of 'URL Rewriting' feature in some popular web servers, e.g. Apache, to provide an effective approach of caching dynamic web pages.

This paper is concerned with a strictly positive real H 2 controller design problem using an observer-based controller with Kalman filter gain. In this paper, we propose a successive method with non-common Lyapunov variables for this control problem. The feature of our method is to construct a controller sequence on which H 2 norm is monotonically non-increasingly while all controllers are strictly positive real. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our method.

In optical burst switching (OBS) networks one of the most challenging problems is to provide service differentiation. The lack of buffering in the intermediate nodes, makes QoS provisioning in OBS networks a difficult problem to address. In this work, we propose a scheduling algorithm that supports QoS based on preemptions, which are controlled by a novel preemption policy. Our claims are validated by analytical modelling and experimental analysis through simulations using data belonging to two different classes of service - best effort and video streaming data. Performance evaluation is based on throughput measurements for best effort class, and perceived quality metrics like PSNR and MOS scores for the video streaming class.

In this paper, a graphical modeling-based approach to semantic video analysis is presented for jointly realizing modality fusion and temporal context exploitation. Overall, the examined video sequence is initially segmented into shots and for every resulting shot appropriate color, motion and audio features are extracted. Then, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are employed for performing an initial association of each shot with the semantic classes that are of interest separately for every modality. Subsequently, an integrated Bayesian Network (BN) is introduced for simultaneously performing information fusion and temporal contextual knowledge exploitation, contrary to the usual practice of performing each task separately. The final outcome of the overall video analysis approach is the association of a semantic class with every shot. Experimental results as well as comparative evaluation from the application of the proposed approach in the domain of news broadcast video are presented.

Security policies have different components; firewall, active directory, and IDS are some examples of these components. Enforcement of network security policies to low level security mechanisms faces some essential difficulties. Consistency, verification, and maintenance are the major ones of these difficulties. One approach to overcome these difficulties is to automate the process of translation of high level security policy into low level security mechanisms. This paper introduces a framework of an automation process that translates a high level security policy into low level security mechanisms. The framework is described in terms of three phases; in the first phase all network assets are categorized according to their roles in the network security and relations between them are identified to constitute the network security model. This proposed model extends the organization based access control (OrBAC) model to include not only access control policy but also some other administrative security policies like auditing policy. Besides, it enables matching of each rule of the high level security policy with the corresponding ones of the low level security policy. Through the second phase, the high level security policy is mapped into the network security model. The second phase could be considered as a translation of the high level security policy into an intermediate model level. Finally, the intermediate model level is translated automatically into low level security mechanism. The paper illustrates the applicability of proposed approach through an application example.

Fast and periodic collection of aggregated data is of considerable interest for mission-critical and continuous monitoring applications in sensor networks. In the many-to-one communication paradigm known as convergecast, we consider scenarios where data packets are aggregated at each hop en route to a sink node along a tree-based routing topology and focus on maximizing the data collection rate at the sink by employing TDMA scheduling and multiple frequency channels. Our key result in the paper lies in proving that minimizing the schedule length for an arbitrary network in the presence of multiple frequencies is NP-hard, and in designing approximation algorithms with worst-case provable performance guarantees for geometric networks. In particular, we design a constant factor approximation for networks modeled as unit disk graphs (UDG) where every node has a uniform transmission range, and a O(Delta(T)log n) approximation for general disk graphs where nodes have different transmission ranges; n is the number of nodes in the network and Delta(T) is the maximum node degree on a given routing tree T. We also prove that a constant factor approximation is achievable on UDG even for unknown routing topologies so long as the maximum node degree in the tree is bounded by a constant. We also show that finding the minimum number of frequencies required to remove all the interfering links in an arbitrary network in NP-hard. We give an upper bound on the maximum number of such frequencies required and propose a polynomial time algorithm that minimizes the schedule length under this scenario. Finally, we evaluate our algorithms through simulations and show various trends in performance for different network parameters.

Distance learning is a learning style that can overcome the limitation of time and space. Because of the distance, teachers can not assess the achievement of affective domain teaching goal. If teachers can know the student's affective state through the learning system, they can overcome the difficult. The research applies the image recognition technologies to capture the face images of students and analyzes their participation in discussion to evaluate the student's affective state by fuzzy integral. Finally, teachers can assess the student's achievement in affective domain teaching goal.

This paper deals with the mixed H ∞ /D-stability control problem with a fixed-order output feedback controller. It is well known that this control problem is described as a combined bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) problem whose feasible solution is difficult to be found. In this paper, we propose a new exterior-point approach for finding a feasible solution of this problem. The advantage of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point. Numerical examples show the efficiency of our approach.
