A micro-power CMOS front-end, consisting of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and an ultralow cutoff frequency lowpass filter for the acquisition of photoplethysmographic signal (PPG) is presented. Robust dc photocurrent rejection for the pulsed signal source is achieved through a sample-and-hold stage in the feed-forward signal path and an error amplifier in the feedback path. Ultra-low cutoff frequency of the filter is achieved with a proposed technique that incorporates a pair of current-steering transistors that increases the effective filter capacitance. The design was realized in a 0.35-μm CMOS technology. It consumes 600 μW at 2.5 V, rejects dc photocurrent ranged from 100 nA to 53.6 μ A, and achieves lower-band and upper-band - 3-dB cutoff frequencies of 0.46 and 2.8 Hz, respectively. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents stability analysis of the time-delayed equivalent control based single input sliding mode control systems using an LMI approach. Conditions to guarantee the boundedness of the control system trajectories under the time-delayed equivalent control based sliding mode control are obtained. Maximum upper bound of the delay time to guarantee stability is estimated. Digital simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

This paper studies the time-delay effect on the equivalent control based sliding mode control. Conditions to guarantee the boundedness of the control system steady states under the time delayed equivalent control based sliding mode control are obtained. Maximum upper bound of the delay time to guarantee boundedness is estimated. Simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical results.

In this paper, interconnected retarded nonlinear systems are considered. Both the constant discrete and distributed time-delays in the subsystems and the interconnections are addressed. A sufficient small-gain type condition for integral input-to-state stability with respect to external inputs is provided in the framework of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals.

In the design process of a reconfigurable accelerator employing in an embedded system, multitude parameters may result in remarkable complexity and a large design space. Design space exploration as an alternative to the quantitative approach can be employed to find a right balance between the different design parameters. In this paper, a hybrid approach is introduced to analytically explore the design space for a coarse grain accelerator and determine a wise design point exploiting data extracted from applications, quantitatively. It also provides flexibility for taking into account new design constraints as well as new characteristics of applications. Furthermore, this approach is a methodological approach which reduces the design time and results in a point which satisfies the design goals.

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the networkpsilas communication energy dissipation. However, the selection of cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbor nodes. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the JXTA-based e-Learning P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of a smart box environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency. The smart box is intended to be integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. Finally, it is also useful to evaluate the feasibility of our P2P platform to integrate different computational devices.

In the context of this paper, a meta-search third-party Web result ranking mechanism is proposed, which is capable of adapting over the continuous changes that occur on the Web, providing in parallel personalized information acquisition considering the user's navigation behaviour. The designed meta search engine service rates, re-organises and combines the results acquired from search services for a specific user information resource request in accordance with a weighted combination of a performance related factor (tightly related to the ranking of the Web result as given by the search engine service) and a reliability related factor (corresponding to the user's satisfaction stemming from the specific Web result that he/she browses), while the performance of each search engine with respect to adequately adapting to the Web evolution is taken into account. Assuming a group of users falling within the same category with respect to the information/resource needs, the Web result reliability rating system is collaborative in the sense that it considers both first-hand information (acquired from the user's past experiences with the search engine services) and second-hand information (corresponding to other users' experiences with search engine services), while the matching degrees of the users' profiles have been taken into account. A set of results indicative of the efficiency of our proposed scheme is provided. Transparency is achieved for both personalization and Web evolution adaptation mechanisms, requiring virtually none effort from the user's part.

Historically, the ACM Multimedia Conference is split into a "technical" program and an "arts" program. These programs sometimes seem completely separate from one another, victims of a "semantic gap" between disciplines. The goal of this panel is to create a space in which scientists learn from artists, and arts from science. We need to discover new connections between modalities of research. In order to create the most exciting and powerful future forms of interactive multimedia systems, the ones that will create the most beneficial broader impact on humanity, we need to foster new collaborations between artists and scientists. This panel seeks to bridge the great divide of language and communities that has fragmented us, creating a new space for developing connections between the arts and sciences of multimedia research, as embodied through the artists and scientists of ACM Multimedia. The goal is to make this conference a premier site for catalyzing emergent connections. Among the ancient Greeks, the techne, which included the sciences, were based in the arts. Our modes of knowledge production have since separated and grown alienated. "What weird stuff are those people doing?" To bridge the divide, we must understand and acknowledge differences, and use this as a basis for discovering common ground. In the sciences, knowledge is constructed empirically, through hypotheses and validations. Aesthetics and concepts play essential roles in how works of art are formulated to stimulate experiences. Where do these aims intersect and how might they inform each other? In this conference, one track develops pattern recognition methods for content analysis and retrieval. Another develops network and system techniques. Applications invoke these methods in usable systems. Human-centered multimedia serves as a bridge connecting human experiences with algorithmic methods. The interactive art program develops new concepts of how multimedia can function culturally, amidst society,
