We investigate a call admission control (CAC) mechanism to provide service differentiation and fairness control in a WDM network with grooming capabilities. A WDM grooming network can handle different classes of traffic streams which differ by their bandwidth requirements. We assume that for each class, call interarrival and holding times are exponentially distributed. Using a Markov decision process approach, an optimal CAC policy is derived to provide service differentiation in the network. The policy iteration algorithm is used to numerically compute the optimal policy. Furthermore, we propose an heuristic decomposition algorithm with lower computational complexity and very good performance. Simulation results compare the performance of our proposed policy with that of complete sharing and complete partitioning policies.

QoS provisioning according to the DifTServ framework has raised the requirements for pricing mechanisms that preserve the potential and flexibility of DiffServ. At the same time, such mechanisms should reflect resource usage, allocate resources efficiently, reimburse costs or maximize service provision profits and lead customers to requesting services that will maximize their revenue. This work proposes a policy for pricing based on resource allocation by a particular category of DiffServ-based services for aggregated traffic in the case of transport networks. Our research takes into account the particularities that apply to the case of DiffServ services' provision over transport networks while imposing minimal overload and a-priori estimation of costs. The detailed pricing methodology is presented and experimentally evaluated.

We describe the design and implementation of secure and robust protocol and system for a national electronic lottery. Electronic lotteries at a national level are a viable cost effective alternative to mechanical ones when there is a business need to support many types of "games of chance" and to allow increased drawing frequency. Electronic lotteries are, in fact, extremely high risk financial application: If one discovers a way to predict or otherwise claim the winning numbers (even once) the result is huge financial damages. Moreover, the e-lottery process is complex, which increases the possibility of fraud or costly accidental failures. In addition, a national lottery must adhere to auditability and (regulatory) fairness requirements regarding its drawings. Our mechanism, which we believe is the first one of its kind to be described in the literature, builds upon a number of cryptographic primitives that ensure the unpredictability of the winning numbers, the prevention of their premature leakages and prevention of fraud. We also provide measures for auditability, fairness, and trustworthiness of the process. Besides cryptography, we incorporate security mechanisms that eliminate various risks along the entire process. Our system which was commissioned by a national organization, was implemented in the field and has been operational and active for a while, now. © IFCA/Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In this paper we propose a Virtual Round Robin (VRR) gateway algorithm to enforce per-flow fair bandwidth allocation by keeping per-flow information. This mechanism achieves reasonably fair bandwidth allocation and is easily amenable to high-speed implementations. It uses a single FIFO queue with probabilistic drop-on-arrival. In our simulation study, we compare the performance VRR with other two algorithms, random Early Detection (RED) and Flow random Early Drop (FRED) (D. Lin and R. Morris, 1997). Our simulation results show that VRR outperforms RED and FRED in wide variety of scenarios.

The objective of the proposed application is the development of a new interactive application for the simulation of Ancient Greek technology works, with the use of advanced virtual reality and computer vision technologies. In order to achieve these objectives haptic interaction mechanisms and a gesture recognition system were implemented in a virtual environment platform. A novel collision detection method was developed and virtual reality agents were used in order to achieve the desired results. The developed system was evaluated by real users and conclusions were drawn concerning the potentiality of the proposed application.

The new economy is the result of the information revolution that promotes the emergence of networked, ubiquitous and collaborative service provision. Furthermore, the globalisation of trade has increased the number of competitors, driving the need for federated and networked business models. In this paper we argue that next generation ASP models could benefit from the use of the grid. We describe a grid-enabled architecture for coordinated resource sharing and problem solving in dynamic, multi-institutional ASP vendors.

In this paper, feature extraction of EEG signals during right and left motor imagery is tried. As the extraction method, directed information analysis, pattern recognition based on AR model, and mixture probability algorithm based on AR model is used. This work presents a complete face authentication system integrating 2D intensity and 3D range data, based on a low-cost, real-time structured light sensor. Novel algorithms are proposed that exploit depth data to achieve robust face detection, localization and authentication under conditions of background clutter, occlusion, face pose alteration and harsh illumination. The well known embedded hidden Markov model technique for face authentication is applied to depth maps. A method for the enrichment of face databases with synthetically generated views depicting various head poses and illumination conditions is proposed. The performance of the proposed system is tested on an extensive face database of 3,000 images. Experimental results demonstrate significant gains resulting from the combined use of depth and intensity.

An appearance-based face authentication system integrating 2D color or intensity images and 3D data is presented. The proposed system is based on a low-cost 3D and color sensor, capable of synchronous real-time acquisition of 3D images and associated color images. Novel algorithms are proposed that exploit depth information and prior knowledge of face geometry and symmetry to achieve robust face detection, localization and authentication under conditions of background clutter, occlusion, face pose alteration and harsh illumination. A method for the enrichment of face databases with synthetically generated views depicting variations in pose and illumination is proposed to cope with head rotations and illumination variations, avoiding a cumbersome enrolment process. The performance of the proposed authentication scheme is tested thoroughly on a face database of 1500 images, recorded with the 3D acquisition system. Experimental results demonstrate significant gains resulting from the combined use of depth and color or intensity information, in comparison to the use of 2D images alone.

Fault detection and isolation is a challenging task in the control of large scale complex systems. In this work we proceed to the fault diagnosis of an electric power transmission system based on a fault diagnosis of hybrid systems method presented in our previous work. Power systems often exhibit complex behavior in response to large disturbances. Such behavior is characterized by interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete events. Components such as loads drive the continuous dynamics, while other components such as protection devices exhibit event-driven discrete dynamics. Therefore, power systems constitute an important case of hybrid systems for fault detection.
