Smart dust is a set of a vast number of ultra-small fully autonomous computing and communication devices, with very restricted energy and computing capabilities, that co-operate to quickly and efficiently accomplish a large sensing task. Smart dust can be very useful in practice i.e. in the local detection of a remote crucial event and the propagation of data reporting its realization. In this work we continue our effort towards the research on smart dust from a basic algorithmic point of view. Under a simple but realistic model for smart dust we present an interesting problem, which is how to propagate efficiently information on an event detected locally. Then we present anew smart dust protocol, which we call the "Sleep-Awake" protocol, for information propagation that explicitly uses the energy saving features (i.e. the alteration of sleeping and awake time periods) of the smart dust particles. By using both some simple probabilistic analysis and extensive experiments, we provide some first concrete results for the success probability and the time and energy efficiency of the protocol, in terms of parameters of the smart dust network. We note that the study of the interplay of these parameters allows us to program the smart dust network characteristics accordingly.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds to multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE's communication platform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper.

Undoubtedly, video-on-demand technology will play a catalytic role in future entertainment and e-learning systems. The key challenge in VoD domain is to provide interactive services in thousands of potential users at a reasonable cost. We present a scalable, high performance, high availability and low cost VoD system design, based on a cluster of personal computer. The scalability of this design is not restricted to cluster-level, but it can easily be applied to a greater MAN-level. The experimental measurements indicated that our design can support simultaneously 90, 170 or 240 high quality video streams for implementations with 1, 2 or 3 server nodes respectively. We show, using queuing theory analysis that these figures correspond to thousands of real users. We also present a multicast method that further enriches our design increasing its reliability in periods of high demand.

This paper describes a solution to extend the managed bandwidth service (MBS), which is provided on a backbone network using MPLS VPN, to non-MPLS domains and also evaluates it. It is based on the class based weighted fair queuing mechanism (CBWFQ) and describes the way it should be implemented to provide guaranteed bandwidth connections. In particular, CBWFQ can provide assured bandwidth connections when simultaneously leads to efficient bandwidth utilization. In addition, the proposed solution is being tested on simulation environment (using the network simulator) in order to evaluate its performance characteristics. On the simulation tests had been reserved specific amount of bandwidth for specific flows and their throughput was measured in order to understand if the proposed solution works well. Finally, the results are very well and prove that this method can guarantee bandwidth for every flow in all network conditions (congested or uncongested). At last, the paper presents a technical example of router configuration for implementing the MBS service according to the basic proposed solution.

The wide expansion and increasing demand for networked virtual environments resulted in efforts for the optimization of these environments with the enhancement of advanced features, which offered extended functionality and created an improved sense of realism. However, the added functionality often creates resource overhead both in the system as well as in the network host, which results in performance reduction. This paper presents such a networked virtual environment and based on the system's architecture tries to trace down with the time and recourse consuming parameters and proposes models on which a networked virtual environment, like the one presented, could achieve optimization of its performance.

Under this scheme an adder is simultaneously used as a test pattern generator and as a response compactor during its own testing. It has recently been shown that accumulators can be used efficiently for test pattern generation as well as for test response compaction. In this paper we present a BIST scheme for accumulators where the accumulator is simultaneously used as a test pattern generator and a response compactor during its own testing. We also show that the proposed BIST scheme is especially suitable for accumulator, adder and multiplier-accumulator RNS channels leading to minimal hardware overhead and short test sequences.
