This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

A consortium of three main sites consisting of the Center for Earth Observing and Space Research (CEOSR) at George Mason University (GMU), the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GDAAC) has been formed. This consortium was recently funded by NASA's Earth Science Information Partner program to provide data and information products serving the needs of seasonal to interannual (S-I) scientists and other related science communities. Specifically, CEOSR will provide information technology and a distributed system architecture as wall as specific data products to be accessed by the scientific communities, COLA will provide scientific direction and a widely-used tool in the S-I research communities and GDAAC data management and archiving. Along with several other contributors, our consortium will create an interdisciplinary source of data for S-I researchers to expand the usage and usefulness of NASA data and serve as broker on behalf of the S-I researchers by providing them enhanced access to NASA's data. The consortium under guidance by an advisory board of experts will select the most appropriate data from the DAAC, NOAA, COLA and the University of Delaware for S-I research applications. Metadata and summary statistics will be extracted and stored in databases at distributed nodes, while the data will be stored on an advanced array of disks. There will be a JAVA-based WWW user interface featuring three advances: (1) content-based searching of the summary metadata (2) exploratory analysis of on-line data and (3) phenomenon-based searching. The consortium will be responsive to the changing needs of its science users as well as in tune with significant information technology advances.

A general performance model for multistage interconnection networks

In this paper we analyze the general case of Multistage Interconnection Networks (MINs), made of k × k switches with finite, infinite or zero length buffers (unbuffered). The exact solution of the steady state distribution of the first stage is derived for all cases. We use this to get an approximation for the steady state distributions in the second stage and beyond. In the case of unbuffered switches we reach the known exact solution for all the stages of the MIN. Our results are validated by extensive simulations. In this paper, we deal with competitive local on-line algorithms for non-preemptive channel allocation in mobile networks. The signal interferences in a network are modeled using an interference graph G. We prove that the greedy on-line algorithm is L,-competitive, where Ll is the maximum degree of G. We employ the "classify and randomly select" paradigm ([5, 12]), and give a 5-competitive randomized algorithm for the case of planar interference graphs. We show that the problem of call control in mobile networks with multiple available frequencies reduces to the problem of call control in networks with a single frequency. Using this reduction, we present on-line algorithms for general networks with a single frequency. We give a local on-line algorithm which is (Formula presented)–comPetitive, where α is the independence number of G and (1/ 2'!a b is the average degree of G. The above results hold in the case that the duration of each request is infinite, and the benefit the algorithm gains by accepting each request is equal to 1. They are extended to handle requests of arbitrary durations, and arbitrary benefits. To our knowledge, this is the first time that competitive analysis is employed to study on-line algorithms for the channel allocation problem in mobile networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

In this paper, we present the functional design and the technical specifications of a complete blood-transfusion information system, named the PELICAN system. This system is now under development in the University of Patras in co-operation with the Blood Centre of the University Hospital in Patras. We describe the main aspects of its architecture and the basic functionalities of the system.

The fundamental problem of selecting the order and identifying the time varying parameters of an autoregressive moving average model (ARMA), is one that impacts on many important fields of interest such linear prediction, system identification and spectral analysis. Naturally, it has a long and continuing history and we present an algorithm applicable to on-line/adaptive operation. The method is based on the reformulation of the problem in the standard state space form of the subsequent implementation of a bank of Kalman filters, each fitting a different order model. The problem is reduced then to selecting the true model, using the well known multi-model partitioning theory, for general (not necessarily Gaussian) data PDFs. Furthermore, the method is adaptive, in the sense that it has the ability of tracking successfully changes in the model structure, in real time.

The World Wide Web (WWW) provides a common framework for information exchange between different people. Everyone "publishes" texts, images, animation and video over the WWW, since it provides a cost-efficient way to disseminate knowledge and technology transfer. All this digital multimedia data can be duplicated without any loss of quality. The copy is identical to the master and the process of copying does not affect the quality of the master itself. With the increasing popularity of the Internet, especially with the hypertext based WWW, the possibility for everyone to access multimedia data has increased. Authors (that is developers or producers of digital data) should have a way to protect the intellectual property rights of their products. Image processing techniques have been presented in order to mark or "stamp" a digital product with the authors signatures. This paper introduces the current research solutions in the field of watermarking techniques, emphasizing three promising algorithms and a protocol for multimedia protection.

It is well known that for the linear filtering problem with unknown time-invariant or time-varying parameters i.e. the adaptive filtering problem, the multimodel adaptive filter (MMAF) based on the Lainiotis (1973) partitioning theorem is the best solution. It is also known that genetic algorithms (GA) are one of the best methods for searching and optimisation. A new method which combines the effectiveness of MMAF and GAs robustness has been developed. The experiments' results, obtaining from the performance of this new method to a specific linear model with one unknown time-invariant parameter, indicate that the proposed method provides better estimation of the unknown parameter compared to that of a single MMAF.

Proposes a powerful model, called MITOS (Model for Intelligent Three-dimensional Object Support) for the intelligent support of spatial data consisting of irregular 3D objects and their interrelations. The core novelty of the proposed data model lies in its delicate way of representing the (complicated) world of 3D objects in order to reduce its complexity. MITOS achieves this by discretizing the space, using mostly topological notions and finite sets, and by recalling geometry only when needed. On the other hand, MITOS's objects are effectively handled by the MITOS language, which is an integration of an object-oriented programming language and a logic-based one.
