The Internet of Things (IoT) is rethinking the model for building the smart cities, and this paper makes just such a step in that direction. It then examines various ways of cutting urban pollution. Under increasing pressure from rising urbanization, smart cities represent a huge leap forward in regard to efficiency, scalability and livability. The key is IoTtechnology, which collects and analyzes data in real time and allows for more quick-witted and intelligent urban governance. This paper combines literature review, case study analysis and data-driven methods to focus on the opportunities offered by IoT applications for restructuring urban traffic systems and pollution control. This study explains what is missing in modern smart city initiatives, and offers a road map for bringing Internet of things solutions to municipal systems. The results can also serve as some answers to cope with the dilemma and bring more intelligence, cleanness, efficiency in making a city into a smart metropolis. The article ends by highlighting the significance of IoT for future urban development, and ideas for further research into this complex yet rapidly evolving area.

Introduction: Osteosynthesis of the equine femur is still a challenge for veterinary medicine. Even though intramedullary fracture fixation is possible nowadays, the varying geometry of the medullary cavity along the bone axis is a critical factor. Limited contact area between implant and bone can cause insufficient primary stability. In this study, it was investigated whether the osteosynthesis stability can be improved with a form-adaptive reinforcement for the diaphyseal part of the proximal fragment. Material and Methods: Eight equine femora were fitted with intramedullary nail osteosynthesis and analyzed by 4-point bending. Virtual position planning of the ex-vivo implantation using CT-data increased comparability. For five femora the proximal fragment was reinforced with a flexible polymer mixture. Longterm stability was tested via cyclic loading. Bending stiffness and its development due to cyclic loading was evaluated before and after reinforcement procedure. Finally, load-to-failure was tested in the same setup. Results and Discussion: The application of the polymer reinforcement increased the maximum torque in the load-to-failure measurement by 26%. Bending stiffness was not affected in the measured loading range by the reinforcement. Cyclic loading increased bending stiffness for a conditioned state but showed to be reversible for the most part. Conclusion: The fracture adjacent reinforcement showed to be beneficial to the osteosynthesis stability, but further investigation is necessary for surgical application. © 2022 The Author(s), published by De Gruyter.

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is currently being discussed as a technology to safeguard communication in a future where quantum computers compromise traditional public-key cryptosystems. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive security evaluation of QKD-based solutions, focusing on real-world use cases sourced from academic literature and industry reports. We analyze these use cases, assess their security and identify the possible advantages of deploying QKD-based solutions. We further compare QKD-based solutions with Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), the alternative approach to achieving security when quantum computers compromise traditional public-key cryptosystems, evaluating their respective suitability for each scenario. Based on this comparative analysis, we critically discuss and comment on which use cases QKD is suited for, considering factors such as implementation complexity, scalability, and long-term security. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the role QKD could play in future cryptographic infrastructures and offer guidance to decision-makers considering the deployment of QKD. © 2025, CC BY-SA.

Recent trends point towards communication networks will be multi-path in nature to increase failure resilience, support load-balancing and provide alternate paths for congestion avoidance. We argue that the transition from single-path to multi-path routing should be as seamless as possible in order to lower the deployability barrier for network operators. Therefore, in this paper we are focusing on the problem of routing along the shortest pairs of disjoint paths between each source-destination pair over the currently deployed link-state routing architecture. We show that the union of disjoint path-pairs towards a given destination has a special structure, and we propose an efficient tag encoding scheme which requires only one extra forwarding table entry per router per destination. Our numerical evaluations demonstrate that in real-world topologies usually only 4 bit tags are sufficient in the packet headers to route on the disjoint path-pairs. Finally, we show that our tags automatically encode additional paths beyond the shortest pair of disjoint paths, including the shortest paths themselves, which enables incremental deployment of the proposed method.

Breast lesion segmentation in ultrasound (US) videos is essential for diagnosing and treating axillary lymph node metastasis. However, the lack of a well-established and large-scale ultrasound video dataset with high-quality annotations has posed a persistent challenge for the research community. To overcome this issue, we meticulously curated a US video breast lesion segmentation dataset comprising 572 videos and 34,300 annotated frames, covering a wide range of realistic clinical scenarios. Furthermore, we propose a novel frequency and localization feature aggregation network (FLA-Net) that learns temporal features from the frequency domain and predicts additional lesion location positions to assist with breast lesion segmentation. We also devise a localization-based contrastive loss to reduce the lesion location distance between neighboring video frames within the same video and enlarge the location distances between frames from different ultrasound videos. Our experiments on our annotated dataset and two public video polyp segmentation datasets demonstrate that our proposed FLA-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance in breast lesion segmentation in US videos and video polyp segmentation while significantly reducing time and space complexity. Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S., affects both the heart and blood vessels. Contrast-enhanced cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) is a prominent imaging modality for assessing heart and coronary artery morphology, aiding in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. Cine CTA, which captures multiple 3D heart images throughout the cardiac cycle, is particularly useful for evaluating nonischemic cardiomyopathy, a common cause of heart failure unrelated to coronary artery disease. Key biomarkers, such as left ventricular ejection fraction, which measures the amount of blood pumped from the heart’s lower chambers per contraction, and myocardial strain, which evaluates the deformation of the heart muscle during contraction and relaxation, are vital for assessing heart function. We developed an automated artificial intelligence (AI) framework to segment various cardiac structures across all image volumes representing different phases of the cardiac cycle. The framework also automatically extracts three short-axis slices to calculate the myocardial strain in the left ventricle. The results are compared with strain measurements obtained from cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) cine imaging. Our study shows both radial and circumferential strains from cine CTA are comparable to those from cine CMR. The proposed AI framework facilitates a comprehensive evaluation of myocardial function throughout the cine CTA, supporting improved diagnostic accuracy.

Metaheuristic algorithms play a pivotal role in solving complex optimization problems. This study addresses a common challenge faced by such algorithms, i.e., getting trapped in local optima. This problem hampers the efficacy of metaheuristic algorithms in achieving globally optimal solutions. This limitation is also observed in Hybrid Henry Gas Solubility Optimization Algorithm (HHGSO)-a new metaheuristic based algorithm-which employs a cluster-based approach for population management. While this approach fosters exploration by diversifying the search process, it lacks adaptiveness in cluster assignments and the potentiality of hybridization with other algorithms. These shortcomings hinder the algorithm's ability to effectively escape local optima and harness the strengths of diverse optimization techniques. To mitigate these challenges, this study proposed an Enhanced HHGSO (EHHGSO) algorithm, an advanced hybridization of HHGSO. Here, a novel backtracking based technique is incorporated that can detect the trapping into local optima and can escape from it. Empirical findings substantiate the efficacy of EHHGSO in comparison to its ancestor, HHGSO for various benchmark functions.

This paper introduces the Biometrics Data Space framework, which is a secure ecosystem built on Data Spaces technology and it is designed to address the challenges of suspect identification during cross-border crime investigation. Apart from Data Spaces technology, the proposed framework innovates by leveraging also Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) and blockchain to enable secure, trustworthy, and sovereign data exchange between Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) across borders. Specifically, it utilizes advanced PETs, including Large-Scale Biometric Data Indexing based on deep hashing techniques and Homomorphic Encryption to allow for suspect identification without disclosing sensitive information of personal biometric data. Thus, it enables LEAs to securely compare and exchange encrypted sensitive biometric data, including facial images, fingerprints and voiceprints, while maintaining data privacy and data sovereignty. LEAs define the usage rules for the biometic data they own and these rules are enforced to and respected by the other LEAs participating in the Biometrics Data Space. The proposed architecture is designed to be scalable, allowing the incorporation of additional biometric modalitiies and the easy expansion and integration with new participant LEAs.

This paper proposes a novel framework to realize self-stabilizing Byzantine tolerant swarms. In this framework, non-Byzantine robots execute tasks while satisfying location functions, that is, the robots use a policy for their location choice, which restricts their location to satisfy the functions. We give a general Byzantine-resilient self-stabilizing algorithm based on the location function, and then provide an efficient implementation of the self-stabilizing algorithms for special classes of tasks, called polynomial-based tasks and shape-based tasks. We also demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed framework by implementing typical tasks of robots. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The world is advancing to a new digitalized world that has one of the most powerful technologies that ever existed in human history. These technologies are making humans create such objects that were only told in the fairy tales in the past. This research proposes a model that integrates the latest and one of the most powerful technologies of the decade. This study integrated the 5G network with the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) which is based on artificial intelligence to develop an intelligent machine capable of mimicking humans. Such a system is so powerful yet so vulnerable to problems like hacking, cyber-attacks and so on. This problem is solved with the blockchain. The research adds blockchain to the model to make the model more secure and efficient as it provides a decentralized system to ensure transparency. Previous researches have covered the IoT with blockchain but this research is the advanced version which includes the industrial IoT using Artificial intelligence to make intelligent Internet of Things. © 2022 IEEE.
