Refined Young inequalities with Specht’s ratio

In this paper, we show that the ν -weighted arithmetic mean is greater than the product of the ν -weighted geometric mean and Specht’s ratio. As a corollary, we also show that the ν -weighted geometric mean is greater than the product of the ν -weighted harmonic mean and Specht’s ratio. These results give the improvements for the classical Young inequalities, since Specht’s ratio is generally greater than 1. In addition, we give an operator inequality for positive operators, applying our refined Young inequality.

We deal with ridge detection methods from digital elevation map (DEM) data. As ridge detection methods, the O (N 2 ) -time steepest ascent method and the O (N) -time discrete Lap lace transform (D.L.T.) method are known, where N is the number of cells. However, the D.L.T. method is too blurry to form ridge lines. In this paper, we introduce a 12 neighbor D.L.T. method which is a modification of the 4 neighbor D.L.T. method. And we also introduce another ridge detection method by the classification of local shapes around each cell. We can consider 32 patterns for ridges or valleys. Furthermore, we compare and evaluate their ridge detection methods in a certain area. We note that our two methods provide blurry terrain maps, but it require only O (N) -time for N cells, in comparison with the steepest ascent method.

All manufacturing companies have been trying to integrate intelligence-oriented strategies into their workflow. This saves time and money and leads to a better quality of goods. This intelligent strategy is in the subject area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In our contribution a Knowledge-Based system (KBS) for image processing and pattern recognition, machine learning (ML) is used to measure the quality of the distribution of salami slices on pizza crusts. Measuring quality provides the opportunity to correct the position of the salami slices by automated systems (e.g. a robot arm) in the future rather than by employees. © 2011 IEEE.

Our goal is to achieve a robot audition system that is capable of recognizing multiple environmental sounds and making use of them in human-robot interaction. The main problems in environmental sound recognition in robot audition are: (1) recognition under a large amount of background noise including the noise from the robot itself, and (2) the necessity of robust feature extraction against spectrum distortion due to separation of multiple sound sources. This paper presents the environmental recognition of two sound sources fired simultaneously using matching pursuit (MP) with the Gabor wavelet, which extracts salient audio features from a signal. The two environmental sounds come from different directions, and they are localized by multiple signal classification and, using their geometric information, separated by geometric source separation with the aid of measured head-related transfer functions. The experimental results show the noise-robustness of MP although the performance depends on the properties of the sound sources. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Non-task-oriented conversation systems have attracted more and more focuses during the past several years. Utterance generation is one of the most popular and important themes for researchers in this field. Approaches by adopting templates or augmented templates have been the main strategies, while some studies focus on the use of n-grams and Markov sequences. Here in this paper, we propose a new method to generate utterances for a conversation system based on Markov sequences and Twitter reply utterances. Moreover, in order to provide a kind of human-like illusion, we incorporate a function in the process to paraphrase the generated utterances by assigning human characters to them. Experiments and questionnaires show that our method works well.

In recent years, it has become a focus to make use of the address recognition technology to improve the performance of mail sorting machines. The research in the postal address recognition, which extends the context relation from words to sentences with the use of the address information in post-processing, can effectively improve the recognition performance. In this paper, we propose a divide-and-rule method. The address is divided into high level address and low level address. For high level address, the similarity method with HLA database is presented. For low level address, the Syllable-based language model which applies to Pinyin is discussed. Then a new similarity method in multi-mode is introduced. After post-processing, for high level address, the hit rate rises from 87.63% to 95.12% while the accuracy rate declines by 2.67%, and for low level address, the hit rate increases from 58.16% to 91.81% while the accuracy rate decreases by 9.40%. © 2011 IEEE.

We discuss tabular forms. It is known in the previous studies that the “octgrid” is a data structure for single layer tabular forms with ruled line preserving algorithms. And the “hexadeci-grid” is known as a data structure for multiply layered tabular forms which is a generalization of the “octgrid”. Our purpose of this paper is to propose a new algorithm based on the “hexadeci-grid” model for editing tabular forms.

Prior to neurosurgical resection of abnormal brain tissues in mTLE patients, focal points of the seizure should be identified via a set of examinations. Once decisive evidence is not present in noninvasive clinical profile of mTLE patients, extraoperative Electrocorticography (ECoG) is required which is the practice of using electrodes placed directly on the exposed surface of the brain. Through classification techniques on a dataset of mTLE patients, we have studied the possibility of reduction of such requirement and shown significant results. Furthermore, we compared the performance of six well known classifiers using the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and a proposed measure of decision confidence. We have shown that in critical domains such as medicine, use of AUC does not provide sufficient information about the confidence of the classification and further measures are needed. © 2011 ACM.
