Past research and recent lessons learned suggest that large-scale wind farms not only have to operate in the maximum power tracking (MPT) mode to maximize capture of wind energy, they also have to be able to quickly respond to system reliability and economic conditions by operating in the power regulation (PR) mode. This paper discusses several newly identified, critical issues that need to be addressed for satisfactory operation of large-scale wind farms. We first present a nonlinear controller that enables seamless operation in both the MPT and PR modes-a feature not available in existing schemes-but suffers from limited robustness. We then present the result of an empirical study on the loss of power generation in wind farms and discuss its impact on wind farm operation. Finally, we propose a controller for potentially overcoming these issues and conclude with future research directions.

We introduce a generalized Wigner-Yanase skew information and then derive the trace inequality related to the uncertainty relation. This inequality is a non-trivial generalization of the uncertainty relation derived by *** for the quantum uncertainty quantity excluding the classical mixture. And we introduce a generalized Fisher information and then derive a generalized Cramer-Rao inequality. We also give an example for our generalized Fisher information and then derive the uncertainty relation for two observables.

Efficient event matching in a content-based publish/subscribe system is an important problem. Most existing matching solutions focus on subscription relations, such as cover and merge. We observe that event matching can leverage matching history and routing destination as well. Once one of the subscriptions associated with a destination is matched, undecided subscriptions associated with the destination need not be evaluated. Since each different subscription has a different possibilities to match an event, different matching order of subscriptions can result in different matching time. We propose a new efficient event matching approach based on matching order, cover relation, matching history (matching possibility) and routing destination. Our solution indexes subscriptions in an efficient way. Based on event matching history, cover relation and routing destination, our matching approach can cause efficient matching with a special match order, and can easily register or cancel subscriptions. We also propose a highly efficient index structure for numeric filters, which can evaluate N numeric filters with O(logN) time complexity. Quantity analysis of our solution is given. We carry out detailed experimentations to verify the effectiveness of our approach. The results show that our approach achieves high matching efficiency.

We present in this paper a scheduling algorithm towards the service migration uncertainty that aims to enhance the service survivability in the server cluster system. Survivable scheduling algorithm is one of the important aspects of survivability study. This paper introduced the stochastic mechanism in the server cluster systems, which made it uncertain of the services migration among the servers, so as to increase the difficulty for the intruders penetrating the systems, and enhanced the system survivability. In this work, we introduced the layers of survivability study, illustrated the function of the survivable scheduling algorithm; then, analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the exist scheduling algorithms; promoted a pseudo-random autonomous algorithm for service survivability scheduling, including generating the scheduling sequence and the Markov-based autonomous competition mechanism, the performance of the algorithm is investigated at last.

Overload management is of vital importance in wide-area publish/subscribe systems, yet current solutions are best-effort. In this paper, we present an admission control scheme for overload management in large-scale and scalable content-based publish/subscribe systems. We analyze the stumbling block for implementing admission control in publish/subscribe systems, and point out how it differs from admission control schemes in other research areas. We propose a cover relation based algorithm to compute subscription resource requirements and an admission control algorithm based on subscription routing. The scheme ensures time, space and flows decoupling without sacrificing scalability of publish/subscribe systems. Finally, we conduct experiments to verify the effectiveness of the scheme. © 2007 IEEE.

Data Modeling is an essential first step for data preparation in any data mining procedure. Conventional entity-relational (E-R) data modeling is lossy, irreproducible, and time-consuming especially when dealing with unstructured image data associated with complex systems like the human brain. We propose a methodological framework for more objective E-R data modeling by eliminating the structured content-dependent metadata associated with the unstructured data. The proposed method is applied to epilepsy-related image data and a system called the human brain image database system (HBIDS) is developed accordingly. Supported with navigation, segmentation, data fusion, and feature extraction modules, HBIDS provides a content-based support environment (C-BASE). Such an environment potentially provides an unlimited (ad hoc) query support with a reproducible and efficient database schema. Switching between different modalities of data, while confining the feature extractors within the object(s) of interest, HBIDS yields anatomically specific query results. The price of such scheme is large storage requirements and relatively high computational cost. Examples of navigation through unstructured image data and content-based retrieval are presented in this paper. The results show the potential of HBIDS in content-based data management for decision support systems in real life medical applications. © 2007 IEEE.

Most current Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) examine all data features to detect intrusion. Also existing intrusion detection approaches have some limitations, namely impossibility to process a large number of audit data for realtime operation, low detection and recognition accuracy. To overcome these limitations, we apply modular neural network models to detect and recognize attacks in computer networks. They are based on the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) neural networks and multilayer perceptrons (MLP). PCA networks are employed for important data extraction and to reduce high dimensional data vectors. We present two PCA neural networks for feature extraction: linear PCA (LPCA) and nonlinear PCA (NPCA). MLP is employed to detect and recognize attacks using feature-extracted data instead of original data. The proposed approaches are tested with the help of KDD-99 dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that the designed models are promising in terms of accuracy and computational time for real world intrusion detection.

In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.
