MENDELS ZONE: A parallel program development system based on formal specifications

MENDELS ZONE is a formal specification-based practical parallel program development system on an MIMD machine with 64 processors. It has been applied to the several practical applications: one such application is described in formal specifications totalling 3700 lines, and the corresponding parallel programs generated from these formal specifications totals 6200 lines. MENDELS ZONE has several key aspects. First, an algebraic specification is used for the functional part of parallel programs and a temporal logic specification is used for the synchronization part of the parallel programs. Second, Petri nets and data-flow diagrams are adopted for visualization. Third, MENDELS ZONE has the following unique features from a parallel programming viewpoint. (1) The confluence property of the complete term rewriting system ensures the quality of non-deterministic execution in parallel programs;(2) Serialization in parallel programming is specified using propositional temporal logic;(3) Parallel implementation of theorem provers contributes to practical use.

In this paper, we examine ''program adjustment'', a formal and practical approach to developing correct concurrent programs, by automatically adjusting an imperfect program to satisfy given constraints. A concurrent program is modeled by a finite state process, and program adjustment to satisfy temporal logic constraints is formalized as the synthesis of an arbiter process which partially serializes target (i.e., imperfect) processes to remove harmful nondeterministic behaviors. Compositional adjustment is also proposed for large-scale compound target processes, using process equivalence theory. We have developed a computer-aided programming environment on the parallel computer Multi-PSI, called MENDELS ZONE, that adopts this compositional adjustment. Adjusted programs can be compiled into the kernel language (KL1) and executed on Multi-PSI.

We present a one-to-many object matching system based on neural dynamic link architecture. When an input image containing multiple objects is given, if some of them are similar to a stored model, the system can establish geometric transformation-invariant mappings between the model and the corresponding object regions in the input image. This can be achieved by extending the fast dynamic link matching (FDLM) algorithm to allow multiple blob formation. Numerical simulations of neural layer dynamics indicate that multiple blobs can be developed where the layer input is sufficiently strong against the background level. To extract matched regions from the input layer, we consider each neural layer as a graph and introduce another neural system based on local edge mappings. This system can roughly detect the matched regions with neighborhood-preserving mappings without global cost functions.

We present an extended version of dynamic link matching for the recognition of all objects similar to a stored model. With a given complex image containing multiple objects, our system can detect all of those matched with a model regardless of their type of geometric transformation and distortion. This is achieved by allowing simultaneous strengthening of multiple bundles of interlayer links (dynamic links) when local features in the model have more than one counterpart in the image layer. To extract the matched regions, in which dynamic links are established as geometrically invariant mappings, we propose a neural system based on edge dynamics in the edge-mapping parameter space.

The paper presents a technique for reusing design processes which aims at facilitating software reuse. The authors have constructed a specification reuse model based on two major ideas. One is to extract domain specific specification parts, and the other is to reuse design processes represented by reuse histories. In addition, a domain analysis method is proposed to construct the specification reuse model. This model has been evaluated through experimental applications. The results show that the model facilitates software reuse, and that the domain analysis clarifies the application scope of the model. Applicability of our model to other domains is also discussed.

Many software quality metrics to objectively grasp software products and process have been proposed in the past decades. In actual projects, quality metrics has been widely applied to manage software quality. However, there are still several problems with providing effective feedback to intermediate software products and the software development process. We have proposed a software quality management using quality metrics which are easily and automatically measured. The purpose of this proposal is to establish a method for building in software quality by regularly measuring and reviewing. The paper outlines a model for building in software quality using quality metrics, and describes examples of its application to actual projects and its results. As the results, it was found that quality metrics can be used to detect and remove problems with process and products in each phase. Regular technical reviews using quality metrics and information on the change of the regularly measured results was also found to have a positive influence on the structure and module size of programs. Further, in the test phase, it was found that with the proposed model, the progress of corrective action could be quickly and accurately grasped.

A feedback mechanism which enhances similarity between recognition by a human and that by an artificial neural network we have proposed is introduced. A human may turn his attention to a particular portion of the object in order to classify it successfully. It is regarded as a feedback from the first rough classification to the final one. The proposed feedback mechanism is designed to simulate such attention. The recognition rates by a neural network with the feedback mechanism exceed those by a former neural network.

The paper describes a quality assurance approach for source code to assure source code quality with less effort than conventional method. The paper introduces the data relation tracking method (DRTM) as a practical instance of data oriented program analysis, a key factor of our new quality assurance approach. DRTM helps comprehension of the source code by extracting the internal logic of the source code in declarative notation. An example and evaluation of DRTM for the C language is also described. The example shows that DRTM can deal in data structures and inter-data relations of any control structure. The evaluation shows that DRTM can extract the internal logic of the source code uniquely and that the extracted internal logic is useful for quality assurance of the source code. © 1995 IEEE.

The paper proposes an architecture for the replication of program modules enabling them to behave in accordance with their own local knowledge, without any influence by not only their location, replication degree and fault-tolerant mechanism but also system level modules. In the proposed architecture, program modules are implemented as objects and communication among them is carried out by a total ordering broadcast protocol, enabling individual objects to behave autonomously. Therefore, individual objects can choose the most suitable replication degree and fault-tolerant mechanism in accordance with their own required reliability and execution efficiency without the need to change programs or for the object location to be influenced. © 1995 IEEE.
