The hyper-geometric distribution model (HGDM) has been presented as a software reliability growth model with the capability to make estimations for various kinds of real observed test-and-debug data. With the HGDM, the discovery and rediscovery of faults during testing and debugging has been discussed. One of the parameters, the 'ease of test' function w(i) represents the total number of faults discovered and rediscovered at a test instance. In this paper, the authors firstly show that the ease of test function w(i) can be expressed as a function of the test coverage for the software under test. Test coverage represents a measure of how much of the software has been tested during a test run. Furthermore, the ease of test function w(i) can integrate a user-experience based parameter c that represents the strength of test cases to discover faults. This parameter c allows the integration of information on the goodness of test cases into the estimation process. The application of the HGDM to a set of real observed data clearly shows that the test coverage measure can be integrated directly into the ease of test function w(i) of the model.< >

A framework of case-based design and its application to the mechanical design of induction motors are described. In the proposed framework, the use of multiple cases is essential in reducing the problem-solving complexity and ameliorating the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Two subproblem generation processes are introduced: case-based reduction and goal-directed decomposition. In order to implement these processes effectively, a design model is introduced which maps requirement differences to the part of the design to be modified, and a decomposition algorithm is applied which takes into account the retrieval possibility and interaction occurrence. In a preliminary evaluation, the motor design system's performance was found to be as good as that of a human designer.< >

A novel method for equipment planning is proposed for job type production systems, and computer experiment results obtained with a semiconductor fab model are given. The production system is modeled as an open queueing network (QN). The number of servers in the shops are then optimized by simulated annealing. The experiment demonstrated that the process considered is far faster than configuring the job shops manually, and that the configuration obtained is optimum, thus resolving the disadvantages of the traditional method. An advantage of the approach presented is that a wider range of parameter (e.g. product mix) optimization can be handled with the same combination of QN and annealing.< >

A model-based diagnostic system is proposed for continuous physical devices such as a thermal power plant. The aim of model-based diagnosis is to find faulty components in the model from observations. Set-covering is an approach to diagnosis when the causal relations between symptoms and disorders are clearly defined. The new method combines the model-based approach and set-covering approach. The authors introduce the qualitative causal model (QCM) and define symptoms and qualitative disorders in QCM. The system has two submodules to calculate diagnosis from symptoms. The qualitative propagation module calculates the causal relations between the symptoms and the qualitative disorders. The BIPARTITE module based on set-covering generates all the diagnoses using these relations. The proposed method is proved to realize the diagnosis from first principles in the continuous physical domain.< >

This paper discusses several requirements to put formal specifications into practical use in real-time systems, and an integration environment called MENDELS ZONE to satisfy them. The integration environment includes algebraic specification, temporal logic, real-time Structured Analysis and Object-Oriented Design. It also defines a specification process that assists a designer in translating a specification developed with the real-time Structured Analysis method into an Object Oriented Design specification, and that finally generates Ada tasks. The specification process is defined to consist of several specification steps and several intermediate products. In order to validate the activity for each specification step, each intermediate product is described by two formal specification methods: Algebraic specification and temporal logic. © 1991 IEEE.

The qualitative method is proposed for parameter tuning on synchronized queueing network bottleneck (SQN). Bottleneck Diagnosis Expert System for SQN (BDES-S) can carry out parameter tuning in order to diagnose and improve bottlenecks of SQN. BDES-S can produce several alternative qualitative improvement plans for the bottleneck. BDES-S is a novel system to apply the qualitative reasoning to the SQN. © 1991 IEEE.

The paper describes an approach to designing icons whose functional meanings are easy for users to understand. It is first suggested that the design process is separated into two phases: (1) selection of objects to be used for icons; (2) determination of how to draw the selected objects. The authors focus on the first phase and discuss a method for selecting objects that strongly convey the desired functional meanings. A simple experiment for selecting appropriate objects is then described.< >

A model-matching design method for sequence control systems is presented. The author introduces a representation transformations and a structuralization into sequence control systems. The basic control system has some properties which imply a constraint relation between the controller and the control object. This constraint relation in the basic control system is easily represented by matrices or graphs. This representation allows the model-matching design method, which reduces designing the controller to specifying the entire normal sequence and identifying the control object. Specifying the entire normal sequence and identifying the control object require knowledge engineering. Therefore, a sequence controller can be designed by the combination of the model matching design method and some techniques of knowledge engineering.< >
