FORECASTING SHORT-TERM PASSENGER FLOW ON A BUS ROUTE: A SPLITTING–INTEGRATING METHOD BASED ON PASSENGER TRAVEL BEHAVIOR

Short-term passenger flow forecasting is the key to implement real-time dynamic dispatching of buses, which can meet the travel time requirement of passengers with different attributes. In practice, it is difficult to obtain passenger attribute information due to the restriction of bus information systems or other conditions. This article proposes a new perspective on identifying passenger attribute information, that is, the correlation between the bus card number and the travel time is used to analyse passenger travel behaviour. Then using the travel frequency as the splitting boundary, the passenger set is split into different types of subsets, which are predicted by different methods. The total forecast values are obtained by integration, so as to explore the effectiveness of the passenger attribute identification and splitting–integrating method. The result shows that: (1) compared with the forecasting method without considering the passenger travel behaviour, the performance of splitting–integrating method is better, and the passenger attribute identification method is effective;(2) the value of the splitting boundary will affect the size and consistency of the subset, and the optimal value can be sought according to forecast results;(3) different types of subsets should be treated by different forecasting models and combination paths. © 2025 The Author.

Journey into Automation: Image-Derived Pavement Texture Extraction and Evaluation

Mean texture depth (MTD) is pivotal in assessing the skid resistance of asphalt pavements and ensuring road safety. This study focuses on developing an automated system for extracting texture features and evaluating MTD based on pavement images. The contributions of this work are threefold: firstly, it proposes an economical method to acquire three-dimensional (3D) pavement texture data;secondly, it enhances 3D image processing techniques and formulates features that represent various aspects of texture;thirdly, it establishes multivariate prediction models that link these features with MTD values. Validation results demonstrate that the Gradient Boosting Tree (GBT) model achieves remarkable prediction stability and accuracy (R2 = 0.9858), and field tests indicate the superiority of the proposed method over other techniques, with relative errors below 10%. This method offers a comprehensive end-to-end solution for pavement quality evaluation, from images input to MTD predictions output. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Visual abstraction of dynamic network via improved multi-class blue noise sampling

Massive sequence view (MSV) is a classic timeline-based dynamic network visualization approach. However, it is vulnerable to visual clutter caused by overlapping edges, thereby leading to unexpected misunderstanding of time-varying trends of network communications. This study presents a new edge sampling algorithm called edge-based multi-class blue noise (E-MCBN) to reduce visual clutter in MSV. Our main idea is inspired by the multi-class blue noise (MCBN) sampling algorithm, commonly used in multi-class scatterplot decluttering. First, we take a node pair as an edge class, which can be regarded as an analogy to classes in multi-class scatterplots. Second, we propose two indicators, namely, class overlap and inter-class conflict degrees, to measure the overlapping degree and mutual exclusion, respectively, between edge classes. These indicators help construct the foundation of migrating the MCBN sampling from multi-class scatterplots to dynamic network samplings. Finally, we propose three strategies to accelerate MCBN sampling and a partitioning strategy to preserve local high-density edges in the MSV. The result shows that our approach can effectively reduce visual clutters and improve the readability of MSV. Moreover, our approach can also overcome the disadvantages of the MCBN sampling (i.e., long-running and failure to preserve local high-density communication areas in MSV). This study is the first that introduces MCBN sampling into a dynamic network sampling.

Bayesian network-based risk evaluation model for the operational requirements of the China railway Express under the Belt and Road initiative

The operation of the China railway Express features numerous links across several regions and countries. Effectively controlling therisks involved in the operation of the China railway Express is crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency and promoting the sustainabledevelopment of the China railway Express. The Bayesian network-based risk-management model was built corresponding to theactual operation of the China railway Express;the model used an advanced risk-management theory. The sensitivity analysis of riskfactors and Bayesian network inference were realized using the expectation-maximization and clique-tree propagation *** the risk-checklistmethod, 17 risk-related factors were analysed on 17 nodes of the Bayesian network fromthree perspectives—safety, efficiency and effectiveness—based on expert opinions and the actual operating conditions of the China railway *** from a sensitivity analysis and evidence inference of the Bayesian network model indicated that the sensitivity coefficients ofnodes N01, N04, N07, N08 and N17 of the network were high. Moreover, the risk-occurrence probabilities for nodes N01, N04, N06,N07 and N09 were higher in the case of reverse inference. Our results revealed the crucial factors influencing the risk. The identifiedrisk factors included the stability of the political environment in countries along the route, conditions of station infrastructures andthe complexity of the process of changing rails and reloading. Further, risk-management suggestions were provided. By establishinga sound risk-management framework, reliable assessment and management could be realized in accordance with changes in theoperating conditions of the China railway Express.

A new automatic evaluationmethod of subway service quality based onmetro smart card data is proposed suitable for three different levels:station pair,railway line and subway network,which has merits of overcoming the previous lagging and subjective evaluation in the system of‘questionnaire survey plus evaluationmethod’.First,passengers’travel time distribution for different operating periods in station OD pairs are introduced initially for service evaluation purposes and are classified into different groups in order to infer the station’s operating characteristics at the different ***,the classification is verified by K-means cluster analysis and K-S ***,the service quality weight indicator is proposed to identify the service quality of the entire metro network from the dual perspectives of passengers and ***,the feasibility and rationality of the proposed method are verified by Shenzhen metro smart card data as an *** new automated evaluation method of subway service quality is suitable for online and offline application.

Four-dimensional (4D) flow Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology has emerged as a valuable tool in angiography, offering unique insights into the hemodynamics and flow patterns. This research aims to explore the role of 4D flow MRI in advancing our understanding of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), covering its applications in diagnosing, characterizing and mechanism of DVT, as well as its potential for guiding treatment strategies. The qualitative and quantitative information provided by 4D flow MRI enables a comprehensive assessment of blood flow in different vascular regions, shedding light on the relationship between hemodynamic changes and the onset and progression of vascular diseases. Nevertheless, most quantitative research findings for 4D hemodynamic indicators are lacking, and their use is mainly limited to examining arterial conditions. More exploration will be necessary to determine their applicability in studying venous vessels. © 2025 The Authors

research on Metro Service Quality Improvement Schemes Considering Feasibility

It is an important management task of metro agencies to formulate reasonable improvement schemes based on the result of service quality surveys. Considering scores, weights, and improvement feasibility of service quality attributes in a certain period, this paper integrates Decision Tree (DT) into Importance-Performance analysis (IPA) to build a DT-IPA model, which is used to determine the improvement priority of attributes, and to quantify the improvement degree. If-then rules extracted from the optimal decision tree and the improvement feasibility computed by analytic hierarchy process are two main items derived from the DT-IPA model. They are used to optimize the initial improvement priority of attributes determined by IPA and to quantify the degree of improvement of the adjusted attributes. Then, the overall service quality can reach a high score, realizing the operation goal. The effectiveness of the DT-IPA model was verified through an empirical study which was taken place in Changsha Metro, China. The proposed method can be a decision-making tool for metro agency managers to improve the quality of metro service. © 2021, CC BY.
