We propose a training-sequence-based frequency offset estimator for a multiple transmit-and-receive antenna system in frequency-flat fading channels. The estimator is based on a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion and does not require channel information. To reduce the computational load, we propose to use special training sequences - the periodic orthogonal codes. Using these codes, we get a closed form estimator which requires much lower computational load (some additions and multiplications). For a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and small frequency offset, the proposed estimator achieves the performance of the optimal ML estimator, which locates the peak of the likelihood function. We also apply the proposed estimator to an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. With simulations, we test the performance of the proposed estimator.

Adaptive algorithms are increasingly acknowledged in leading parallel and distributed research. In the past, algorithms were manually tuned to be executed efficiently on a particular architecture. However, interest has shifted towards algorithms that can adapt themselves to the computational resources. A cost model representing the behavior of the system (i.e. system parameters) and the algorithm (i.e algorithm parameters) plays an important role in adaptive parallel algorithms. In this paper, we contribute a computational model based on Bulk Synchronous Parallel processing that predicts performance of a parallelized split-step Fourier transform. We extracted the system parameters of a cluster (upon which our algorithm was executed) and showed the use of an algorithmic parameter in the model that exhibits optimal behavior. Our model can thus be used for the purpose of self-adaption.

The design of multi-layer printed circuit boards is vital in the construction of complex electronic systems. Wire routing is a crucial step in the overall design process, which can be decomposed into a number of single row routing (SRR) problems. This paper proposes an approach to solve the SRR problem based on parallel meta-heuristics. The development of this technique involves the design of an encoding strategy that allows all possible routings to be uniquely represented and the derivation of cost functions that maximizes the quality of the developed solutions. Further, parallelization of the proposed approach is attempted to improve the computational efficiency. The different stages of the development are backed by experiments to show the pros and cons of the sequential and parallel implementations.

Recent advances in intelligent signal processing have made it possible to capture high dynamic range images which are better represented as an array of real numbers rather than the current convention of an array of integers. This paper proposes a solution to address the need for real, rather than just integer, image coding and file formats. Additionally, we propose that the real-valued data be linear in photoquantity (the quantity of light received by the camera) to avoid the image misrepresentation that occurs when a camera's non-linear dynamic range compressor and a display's dynamic range non-linear expander do not match. We present two novel image formats that achieve this: the portable lightspace map (PLM) and its compressed version the JPEG lightspace map (JLM), that builds upon the JPEG compression scheme. The results of various compression levels for real-valued data and their corresponding file sizes are reported.

Embedded real-time systems are ubiquitous in modern society, many of which perform safety-critical functions, and therefore, it is imperative to have tools and techniques that can guarantee a high degree of system correctness. They typically perform information processing on a digital computer tightly coupled with the continuous physical environment. Even though hybrid systems is an active research area, most work has ignored the scheduling behavior of software processes due to contention for the shared CPU resource. We propose an integrated approach based on hybrid automata and model-checking for modeling and analysis of computer-based embedded control systems where real-time scheduling behavior of the controller software is explicitly represented at the model-level, together with the physical environment that it interacts with. An application example is used to demonstrate the benefits of the integrated approach in performing tradeoff analysis involving both the controller software and the controlled physical system. © 2003 IEEE.

We describe an end-to-end tool-chain for model-based design and analysis of component-based embedded real-time software. All aspects of an embedded real-time system are captured in domain-specific models, including software components and architecture, timing and resource constraints, processes and threads, execution platforms, etc. We focus on the AIRES tool, which performs various static analysis tasks based on the models, including system-level dependency analysis, execution rate assignment to component ports, real-time and schedulability analysis, and automated allocation of components to processors. By capturing all relevant information explicitly in the models at the design-level, and performing analysis that provide insight into nonfunctional aspects of the system, we can raise the level of abstraction for the designer, and facilitate rapid system prototyping. © 2003 IEEE.

The model-based methodology has proven to be effective for fast and low-cost development of embedded software. In the model-based development process, transforming a software structural model that describes the underlying application, to an implementable runtime model is a critical issue. Since the designed software will finally run on the target platform, non-functional issues like schedulability timing constraints and resource requirements have to be considered during the transformation. In this paper we propose a generic runtime model architecture that can best satisfy the non-functional requirements of the system, and a generic transformation method to convert a structural model to a runtime model in such an architecture. The transformation approach is based on the notion of end-to-end computations performed by the system in response to external stimuli. We demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed method by constructing a software runtime model for a combined electronic throttle and air-fuel ratio control system. © 2003 IEEE.

Rapid prototyping is an automated manufacturing process that quickly builds physical models from CAD files of three-dimensional prototypes. It dramatically speeds up design and manufacturing processes and substantially reduces the production cost. With the advanced Web technologies, rapid prototyping manufacturing systems can be further integrated and more effectively utilized. We have designed a distributed web platform where users can design prototypes, simulate manufacturing, and issue ordering requests for real manufacturing through browser interfaces. However, an improper scheduling approach may degrade system utilization and throughput significantly. To solve this problem, we propose a real-time scheduling approach to maximize system utilization and minimize the average response time with the best effort. Using this approach, new requests can be accepted dynamically and all accepted requests can be finished before deadlines. We show that the scheduling overhead can be neglected and the average response time is very close to the optimal solution. With the proposed scheduling approach, the Web rapid prototyping platform is able to fully utilize Web resources for rapid prototyping manufacturing and the quality of service is significantly improved. © 2002 IEEE.
