In contemporary machine control systems, the monitoring functions are developed and tested separately, requiring additional time and effort for their integration into a machine control system. Also, the software for most contemporary controllers is fixed and very application-dependent, so the system may not run correctly after such integration since the algorithms are time-sensitive. We show how to modularize machine tool control systems with object-oriented concepts. We define a set of software components and system services for reuse, present some system guidelines based on simulations and test analyses to help users implement controllers that satisfy real-time constraints. We present the integration of broken tool detection functionality into an existing three axis motion controller, and demonstrate that the integration requires minimal effort and skill, and that the hard real-time constraints for broken tool signal processing can be satisfied with our software architecture.

Increasingly, microcontrollers are being used in automotive systems to handle sophisticated control and monitoring activities. As applications become more sophisticated, their design and development becomes complex, necessitating the use of an operating system to manage the complexity and provide an abstraction for improving portability of code. This paper presents EMERALDS-OSEK, an operating system we have designed and implemented based on OSEK/VDX, an open industry standard. We present some of the features and optimizations that make EMERALDS-OSEK appropriate for small, low-cost microcontrollers typically found in automotive applications. We also present measurements of operating system performance. We find EMERALDS-OSEK to be efficient, both in terms of processing overheads and memory usage. However, we also find some parts of the OSEK standard that may be improved, and present our ideas for such improvements. Copyright © 1999 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

There have been significant advances in methods for specifying and solving models that aim to predict the performance and dependability of computer systems and networks. At the same time, however, there have been dramatic increases in the complexity of the systems whose performance and dependability must be evaluated, and considerable increases in the expectations of analysts that use performance/dependability evaluation tools. This paper briefly reviews the progress that has been made in the development of performance/dependability evaluation tools, and argues that the next important step is the creation of modeling frameworks and software environments that support multi-level, multi-formalism modeling and multiple solution methods within a single integrated framework. In addition, this paper presents an overview of the Mobius project, which aims to provide a modeling framework and software environment that support multiple modeling formalisms, methods for model composition and connection, and a way to integrate multiple analytical/numerical- and simulation-based model solution methods. Finally, it suggests research that must take place to make this aim a reality, and thus facilitate the performance and dependability evaluation of complex computer systems and networks. © 1999 IEEE.

The paper presents a timing based approach to implementing fully asynchronous reader/writer mechanisms which addresses the problems of priority inversion and blocking among tasks within multiprocessor real time systems. The approach associates a sequential circular buffer data sharing algorithm, which, although being lock-free and loop-free, is vulnerable to some timing subtlety, with necessary feasibility conditions and a configuring mechanism. Both the feasibility conditions and the configuring mechanism are constructed through analyzing the timing properties of relevant tasks. The feasibility conditions are employed to verify the safety property against a given implementation of the data sharing algorithm while the configuring mechanism helps configure the buffer holding the shared data objects. Applying this timing based approach to the asynchronous data sharing problem has the advantage that sequential data sharing mechanisms may be adapted to help remove priority inversion and blocking incurred by the commonly used lock based synchronization mechanism. Therefore, it demonstrates an effective alternative to the traditional algorithm based approaches. © 1999 IEEE.

The advent of performance-critical services such as online brokerage and e-commerce, as well as QoS-sensitive services such as streaming multimedia, makes existing FIFO servers incapable of meeting application QoS requirements. Re-designing server code to support QoS provisioning, on the other hand, is costly and time-consuming. To remedy this problem, we propose a new QoS-provisioning approach that does not require modification of server and QoS code. We develop a middleware, called qContracts, that can be transparently interposed between the server process and the operating system to achieve performance differentiation and soft QoS guarantees. The middleware enables reuse of existing legacy software in QoS-sensitive contexts, and off-loads QoS management concerns from future real-time service programmers. As an example, we show how the Apache web server is endowed with QoS support using qContracts on UNIX. Experimental results show the efficacy of the middleware in achieving the contracted QoS, while imposing less than 1% overhead.

As the component raises a principal factor in software engineering to ensure the productivity and reusability of the software, component extracting and implementation, component-based system construction, verification of component interfaces, and other related techniques raise significant issues in software engineering. As a reflex of this tendency, a connector model as a subsidiary tool is proposed to describe the interactions between components and software architecture. We propose a method that extracts the domain-specific components for a particular business domain using the connector model and specifies formal descriptions that explain the software architecture. The proposed component extraction method ensures the more earlier identification of components in the development cycle and decreases the number of potential modifications by making an estimate of the interfaces of a component. The formal description of software architecture gains a better understanding of architecture and also is used as a tool for verifying software at a higher abstraction level when changes take place.

This paper extends the useful concept of open systems proposed by W.S. Liu, et al. (1997) in scheduling real-time applications and non-real-time applications, where the schedulability of each real-time application can be validated independently of other applications in the system. We replace the underlying earliest-deadline-first OS scheduler of the open system architecture by W.S. Liu, et al. (1997) with a rate-monotonic OS scheduler. The motivation behind this work is that many existing operating systems may not support the earliest deadline first scheduling very well. We propose to use the idea of sporadic servers to preserve CPU cycles for applications. We also develop schedulability tests for real-time applications which adopt the rate monotonic scheduling algorithm, the earliest deadline first scheduling algorithm, the priority ceiling protocol, and the stack resource policy. We allow tasks in each application to share local and global non-preemptable resources. A global resource synchronization mechanism is proposed. This paper provides a fixed-priority-based alternative for the important open system architecture.

Complete exchange communications are found necessary in many important parallel algorithms. This paper presents algorithms for complete exchange for 2D torus-connected multiprocessors. The proposed algorithms are unique in that they are configurable while trading the time for message startups against larger message sizes. At one extreme, the algorithm minimizes the number of message startups at the expense of increased message-transmission time. At the other extreme, the message-transmission time is reduced at the expense of increased number of message startups. The algorithms are structured such that intermediate solutions are feasible, i.e., the number of message startups can be increased slightly and the message-transmission time is correspondingly reduced. The ability to configure these algorithms makes the proposed algorithms distinct from others and leads to efficient portable implementation of complete exchange algorithms.
