Automated monitoring systems can play a crucial role in the effective assisted living of the elderly. Such systems aim to detect specific actions or activities of the individual which may indicate discomfort, pain or danger. Towards this end, we employ a skeleton-based representation for the human body, as a graph of interconnected nodes, that can be used as the means of meaningful spatial-temporal information of an action. In this paper, a novel methodology for human action recognition is proposed in the context of Graph Convolutional Networks that, along with the conventional full-body human graph, utilizes an arm-specific graph representation to better capture the fine-grained motion of the arms. For experimental evaluation, a new dataset is created that comprises a variety of actions, performed by multiple elderly individuals, specifically for the purpose of monitoring everyday life activities. Additionally, experimentation is extended to a well-established large dataset, namely NTU RGB+D 120, focusing on the actions that correspond to medical conditions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our combined approach, compared to the single graph approach, in terms of recognition accuracy.

We developed and validated a deep learning system (termed DeepDR Plus) in a diverse, multiethnic, multi-country dataset to predict personalized risk and time to progression of diabetic retinopathy. We show that DeepDR Plus can be integrated into the clinical workflow to promote individualized intervention strategies for the management of diabetic retinopathy.

Moisture content is one of the important indexes of food storage security. The existing detection methods are time-consuming and high cost such that it is difficult to realize online moisture detection. In this paper, according to the dielectric properties of wheat, we propose a wheat moisture content detection system with commercial Wi-Fi devices, termed WiWm-EP. First, we introduce the relationship between the moisture content of wheat and its dielectric constant. Then, we establish an equivalent permittivity (EP) model to characterize wheat moisture content, where the EP can be calculated from channel state information (CSI) of the dual antenna model. Besides, we build the fitting function between the EP and the moisture content as the wheat moisture detection model. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the system through different experiments. The average relative error of the detection results of five wheat samples with different moisture contents is less than 3%. © 2023 IEEE.

The future sixth-generation (6G) of wireless networks is expected to surpass its predecessors by offering ubiquitous coverage through integrated air-ground facility deployments in both communication and computing domains. In this network, aerial facilities, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), conduct artificial intelligence (AI) computations based on multi-modal data to support diverse applications including surveillance and environment construction. However, these multi-domain inference and content generation tasks require large AI models, demanding powerful computing capabilities and finely tuned inference models trained on rich datasets, thus posing significant challenges for UAVs. To tackle this problem, we propose an integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework, where UAVs serve as edge nodes for data collection and small model computation. Through wireless channels, UAVs collaborate with ground cloud servers, providing large model computation and model updating for edge UAVs. With limited wireless communication bandwidth, the proposed framework faces the challenge of information exchange scheduling between the edge UAVs and the cloud server. To tackle this, we present joint task allocation, transmission resource allocation, transmission data quantization design, and edge model update design to enhance the inference accuracy of the integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework by mean average precision (mAP) maximization. A closed-form lower bound on the mAP of the proposed framework is derived based on the mAP of the edge model and mAP of the cloud model, and the solution to the mAP maximization problem is optimized accordingly. Simulations, based on results from vision-based classification experiments, consistently demonstrate that the mAP of the proposed integrated air-ground edge-cloud model evolution framework outperforms both a centralized cloud model framework and a distributed edge model framework across various communica

In this paper, the problem of joint sensing and communications is studied over terahertz (THz) vehicular networks. In the studied model, a set of service provider vehicles provide either communication service or sensing service to communication target vehicles or sensing target vehicles, respectively. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the service mode (i.e., providing sensing or communication service) for each service provider vehicle and the subset of target vehicles that each service provider vehicle will serve. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem aiming to maximize the sum of the data rates of all communication target vehicles while satisfying the sensing service requirements of all sensing target vehicles by determining the service mode and the user association for each service provider vehicle. To solve this problem, a graph neural network (GNN) based algorithm with a heterogeneous graph representation is proposed. The proposed algorithm enables the central controller to extract each vehicle's graph information related to its location, connection, and communication interference. Using the extracted graph information, the joint service mode selection and user association strategy will be determined. Simulation results show that the proposed GNN-based scheme can achieve 94% of the sum rate produced by the optimal solution, and yield up to 3.95% and 36.16% improvements in sum rate, respectively, compared to a homogeneous GNN-based algorithm and the conventional optimization algorithm without using GNNs.

The brain is able to acquire and store memories of everyday experiences in real-time. It can also selectively forget information to facilitate memory updating. However, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and coordination of these processes within the brain remains limited. However, no existing artificial intelligence models have yet matched human-level capabilities in terms of memory storage and retrieval. This study introduces a brain-inspired spiking neural model that integrates the learning and forgetting processes of sequential memory. The proposed model closely mimics the distributed and sparse temporal coding observed in the biological neural system. It employs one-shot online learning for memory formation and uses biologically plausible mechanisms of neural oscillation and phase precession to retrieve memorized sequences reliably. In addition, an active forgetting mechanism is integrated into the spiking neural model, enabling memory removal, flexibility, and updating. The proposed memory model not only enhances our understanding of human memory processes but also provides a robust framework for addressing temporal modeling tasks.

The NeRF Signature: Codebook-Aided Watermarking for Neural Radiance Fields

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have been gaining attention as a significant form of 3D content representation. With the proliferation of NeRF-based creations, the need for copyright protection has emerged as a critical issue. Although some approaches have been proposed to embed digital watermarks into NeRF, they often neglect essential model-level considerations and incur substantial time overheads, resulting in reduced imperceptibility and robustness, along with user inconvenience. In this paper, we extend the previous criteria for image watermarking to the model level and propose NeRF Signature, a novel watermarking method for NeRF. We employ a Codebook-aided Signature Embedding (CSE) that does not alter the model structure, thereby maintaining imperceptibility and enhancing robustness at the model level. Furthermore, after optimization, any desired signatures can be embedded through the CSE, and no fine-tuning is required when NeRF owners want to use new binary signatures. Then, we introduce a joint pose-patch encryption watermarking strategy to hide signatures into patches rendered from a specific viewpoint for higher robustness. In addition, we explore a Complexity-Aware Key Selection (CAKS) scheme to embed signatures in high visual complexity patches to enhance imperceptibility. The experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms other baseline methods in terms of imperceptibility and robustness. Cross-silo privacy-preserving federated learning (PPFL) is a powerful tool to collaboratively train robust and generalized machine learning (ML) models without sharing sensitive (e.g., healthcare of financial) local data. To ease and accelerate the adoption of PPFL, we introduce APPFLx, a ready-to-use platform that provides privacy-preserving cross-silo federated learning as a service. APPFLx employs Globus authentication to allow users to easily and securely invite trustworthy collaborators for PPFL, implements several synchronous and asynchronous FL algorithms, streamlines the FL experiment launch process, and enables tracking and visualizing the life cycle of FL experiments, allowing domain experts and ML practitioners to easily orchestrate and evaluate cross-silo FL under one platform. A robust and scalable crowd management infrastructure is crucial in addressing operational challenges when deploying high-density sensors and actuators in a smart city. While crowdsourcing is widely used in crowd management, conventional solutions, such as Upwork and Amazon Mechanical Turk, generally depend on a trusted third-party platform. There exist several potential security concerns(e.g., sensitive leakage, single point of failure and unfair judgment) in such a centralized paradigm. Hence, a recent trend in crowdsourcing is to leverage blockchain(a decentralized ledger technology) to address some of the existing limitations. A small number of blockchain-based crowdsourcing systems(BCSs) with incentive mechanisms have been proposed in the literature, but they are generally not designed with security in mind. Thus, we study the security and privacy requirements of a secure BCS and propose a concrete solution(i.e., SecBCS)with a prototype implementation based on JUICE.

Model authentication hashing: Identifying pirated neural network models

Nowadays, a great number of neural network models have been trained and applied in many fields. At the same time, the emergence of vast network models has already highlighted the security problems of intellectual property protection. High-value pre-trained models of original inventors may be pirated and used by illegal users without authorization. In order to solve this problem, we first give the definition of model differentiation, and then propose an effective robust hashing method based on model parameters for piracy identification in this paper. Through our model hash generation network, the parameters of original model are transformed into a one-way hash sequence with the fixed length, and the robustness and discrimination of the model hashes can be utilized to authenticate model parameters. Experimental results show that the accuracy rates of similar model detection and different model discrimination under different cases are almost all greater than 96.5%, and the comprehensive performance of proposed method is also the best one compared with other 3 SOTA methods. These results mean that the proposed method can be applied for identifying illegal model piracy effectively. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
