Precise cell classification is essential in biomedical diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring, particularly for identifying diverse cell types involved in various diseases. Traditional cell classification methods such as flow cytometry depend on molecular labeling which is often costly, time-intensive, and can alter cell integrity. To overcome these limitations, we present a label-free machine learning framework for cell classification, designed for real-time sorting applications using bright-field microscopy images. This approach leverages a teacher-student model architecture enhanced by knowledge distillation, achieving high efficiency and scalability across different cell types. Demonstrated through a use case of classifying lymphocyte subsets, our framework accurately classifies T4, T8, and B cell types with a dataset of 80,000 preprocessed images, accessible via an open-source Python package for easy adaptation. Our teacher model attained 98% accuracy in differentiating T4 cells from B cells and 93% accuracy in zero-shot classification between T8 and B cells. Remarkably, our student model operates with only 0.02% of the teacher model’s parameters, enabling field-programmable gate array (FPGA) deployment. Our FPGA-accelerated student model achieves an ultra-low inference latency of just 14.5 µs and a complete cell detection-to-sorting trigger time of 24.7 µs, delivering 12x and 40x improvements over the previous state-of-the-art real-time cell analysis algorithm in inference and total latency, respectively, while preserving accuracy comparable to the teacher model. This framework provides a scalable, cost-effective solution for lymphocyte classification, as well as a new SOTA real-time cell sorting implementation for rapid identification of subsets using in situ deep learning on off-the-shelf computing hardware. © 2025, CC BY.

In this paper, for the first time, deep learning (DL) based artificial neural network (ANN) is applied to model the effects of various random variations: work function fluctuation, random dopant fluctuation, and interface trap fluctuation, on gate-all-around silicon nanosheet MOSFETs. The number of fluctuations for each source variation is used as input features and their effects on devices of interest are studied qualitatively and quantitatively. The key figures of merit (FoM) are also extracted accurately from the transfer characteristics, which shows the competency of the ANN model in the domain of device modeling. © 2022 IEEE.

Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs) are emerging as a pivotal element in the evolution of future wireless networks. Despite their potential, the joint design of communication and computation within SAGINs remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, the problem of energy efficiency in SAGIN-enabled probabilistic semantic communication (PSCom) system is investigated. In the considered model, a satellite needs to transmit data to multiple ground terminals (GTs) via an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) acting as a relay. During transmission, the satellite and the UAV can use PSCom technique to compress the transmitting data, while the GTs can automatically recover the missing information. The PSCom is underpinned by shared probabilistic graphs that serve as a common knowledge base among the transceivers, allowing for resource-saving communication at the expense of increased computation resource. Through analysis, the computation overhead function in PSCom is a piecewise function with respect to the semantic compression ratio. Therefore, it is important to make a balance between communication and computation to achieve optimal energy efficiency. The joint communication and computation problem is formulated as an optimization problem aiming to minimize the total communication and computation energy consumption of the network under latency, power, computation capacity, bandwidth, semantic compression ratio, and UAV location constraints. To solve this non-convex non-smooth problem, we propose an iterative algorithm where the closed-form solutions for computation capacity allocation and UAV altitude are obtained at each iteration. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

As a superior multicarrier technique utilizing chirp signals for high-mobility communications, affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is envisioned to be a promising candidate for sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. AFDM is based on the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) with two adjustable parameters of the chirp signals, termed the pre-chirp and post-chirp parameters, respectively. Whilst the post-chirp parameter complies with stringent constraints to combat the time-frequency doubly selective channel fading, we show that the pre-chirp counterpart can be flexibly manipulated for an additional degree of freedom. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel AFDM scheme with the pre-chirp index modulation (PIM) philosophy (AFDM-PIM), which can implicitly convey extra information bits through dynamic pre-chirp parameter assignment, thus enhancing both spectral and energy efficiency. Specifically, we first demonstrate that the subcarrier orthogonality is still maintained by applying distinct pre-chirp parameters to various subcarriers in the AFDM modulation process. Inspired by this property, we allow each AFDM subcarrier to carry a unique pre-chirp signal according to the incoming bits. By such an arrangement, extra bits can be embedded into the index patterns of pre-chirp parameter assignment without additional energy consumption. We derive asymptotically tight upper bounds on the average bit error probability (BEP) of the proposed schemes with the maximum-likelihood detection, and validate that the proposed AFDM-PIM can achieve full diversity under doubly dispersive channels. Based on the derived result, we further propose an optimal pre-chirp alphabet design to enhance the bit error rate (BER) performance via intelligent optimization algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-PIM outperforms the classical benchmarks. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

With the proliferation of IoT devices, there is an escalating demand for enhanced computing and communication capabilities. Mobile Edge computing (MEC) addresses this need by relocating computing resources to the network edge, thereby delivering swifter and more efficient services. This paper introduces a computation offloading and energy consumption optimization framework that leverages Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and MEC. The scheme aims to maximize energy efficiency through the optimization of task allocation, RIS phase shifts, and UAV trajectories. By employing the Multi-Agent Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MATD3) reinforcement learning algorithm, the paper further refines UAV trajectories and RIS configurations. The simulation results indicate that the proposed method surpasses the traditional Concave-Convex Procedure (CCCP) algorithm in both UAV trajectory control and RIS configuration, demonstrating quicker convergence and enhanced stability. The method proves to be adaptable to diverse environments and tasks, showcasing notable benefits in RIS-assisted interference suppression, particularly with large RIS, thereby enhancing UAV data reception rates. Additionally, MATD3 exhibits faster and smoother convergence for extended task durations and smaller RIS scenarios. Simulation results reveal that UAVs tend to move closer to RIS, with energy efficiency falling as IoT tasks increase, affirming the proposed algorithm's high energy efficiency and effectiveness. © 2025 IEEE.

CONDEN-FI: Consistency and Diversity Learning-based Multi-View Unsupervised Feature and In-stance Co-Selection

The objective of multi-view unsupervised feature and instance co-selection is to simultaneously identify the most representative features and samples from multi-view unlabeled data, which aids in mitigating the curse of dimensionality and reducing instance size to improve the performance of downstream tasks. However, existing methods treat feature selection and instance selection as two separate processes, failing to leverage the potential interactions between the feature and instance spaces. Additionally, previous co-selection methods for multi-view data require concatenating different views, which overlooks the consistent information among them. In this paper, we propose a CONsistency and DivErsity learNing-based multi-view unsupervised Feature and Instance co-selection (CONDEN-FI) to address the above-mentioned issues. Specifically, CONDEN-FI reconstructs multiview data from both the sample and feature spaces to learn representations that are consistent across views and specific to each view, enabling the simultaneous selection of the most important features and instances. Moreover, CONDEN-FI adaptively learns a view-consensus similarity graph to help select both dissimilar and similar samples in the reconstructed data space, leading to a more diverse selection of instances. An efficient algorithm is developed to solve the resultant optimization problem, and the comprehensive experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that CONDEN-FI is effective compared to state-of-the-art methods. Semi-supervised multi-label feature selection has recently been developed to solve the curse of dimensionality problem in high-dimensional multi-label data with certain samples missing labels. Although many efforts have been made, most existing methods use a predefined graph approach to capture the sample similarity or the label correlation. In this manner, the presence of noise and outliers within the original feature space can undermine the reliability of the resulting sample similarity graph. It also fails to precisely depict the label correlation due to the existence of unknown labels. Besides, these methods only consider the discriminative power of selected features, while neglecting their redundancy. In this paper, we propose an Adaptive Collaborative Correlation lEarning-based Semi-Supervised Multi-label Feature Selection (Access-MFS) method to address these issues. Specifically, a generalized regression model equipped with an extended uncorrelated constraint is introduced to select discriminative yet irrelevant features and maintain consistency between predicted and ground-truth labels in labeled data, simultaneously. Then, the instance correlation and label correlation are integrated into the proposed regression model to adaptively learn both the sample similarity graph and the label similarity graph, which mutually enhance feature selection performance. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed Access-MFS over other state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

FaceOri: Tracking Head Position and Orientation Using Ultrasonic Ranging on Earphones

Face orientation can often indicate users' intended interaction target. In this paper, we propose FaceOri, a novel face tracking technique based on acoustic ranging using earphones. FaceOri can leverage the speaker on a commodity device to emit an ultrasonic chirp, which is picked up by the set of microphones on the user's earphone, and then processed to calculate the distance from each microphone to the device. These measurements are used to derive the user's face orientation and distance with respect to the device. We conduct a ground truth comparison and user study to evaluate FaceOri's performance. The results show that the system can determine whether the user orients to the device at a 93.5% accuracy within a 1.5 meters range. Furthermore, FaceOri can continuously track user's head orientation with a median absolute error of 10.9 mm in the distance, 3.7◦ in yaw, and 5.8◦ in pitch. Object pose estimation is a fundamental computer vision problem with broad applications in augmented reality and robotics. Over the past decade, deep learning models, due to their superior accuracy and robustness, have increasingly supplanted conventional algorithms reliant on engineered point pair features. Nevertheless, several challenges persist in contemporary methods, including their dependency on labeled training data, model compactness, robustness under challenging conditions, and their ability to generalize to novel unseen objects. A recent survey discussing the progress made on different aspects of this area, outstanding challenges, and promising future directions, is missing. To fill this gap, we discuss the recent advances in deep learning-based object pose estimation, covering all three formulations of the problem, i.e., instance-level, category-level, and unseen object pose estimation. Our survey also covers multiple input data modalities, degrees-of-freedom of output poses, object properties, and downstream tasks, providing the readers with a holistic understanding of this field. Additionally, it discusses training paradigms of different domains, inference modes, application areas, evaluation metrics, and benchmark datasets, as well as reports the performance of current state-of-the-art methods on these benchmarks, thereby facilitating the readers in selecting the most suitable method for their application. Finally, the survey identifies key challenges, reviews the prevailing trends along with their pros and cons, and identifies promising directions for future research. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of traffic radar coverage efficiency under different placement strategies in collaboration with Zhejiang Communications Investment Group Company Limited (CICO). The overall goal is to maximise coverage while minimising blind spots and the number of radars, given the constraints of the road. The NSGA-II multi-objective optimisation algorithm is found to be capable of generating a set of optimal solutions for the proposed radar placement configurations. When aiming for 100% coverage, the results indicate that a multi-antenna radar configuration requires the lowest radar density. Overall, this study provides valuable insights to transportation infrastructure owners in determining the best radar placement strategies for road traffic monitoring.
