In this article a method for the detection of broken rotor bars in asynchronous machines operating under full load is presented. Unlike most Motor Current Signature Analysis (MCSA) approaches, which operate in the frequency domain, our method operates in the time domain. The scheme is based on the use of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) fault/anomaly detector. PCA is applied on the three stator currents to subsequently calculate the Q statistic which is employed for detecting the presence/absence of a fault. The efficiency of the proposed scheme was experimentally evaluated using different fault severity levels, ranging from 1/4 of a broken bar to three broken bars. The obtained results indicate that the method can detect the caused asymmetry with a very restricted amount of data.

A multi-cluster tool is composed of a number of single-cluster tools linked by buffering modules. The capacity of a buffering module can be one or two. Aiming at finding an optimal one-wafer cyclic schedule, this work explores the effect of two-space buffering modules on the performance of a multi-cluster tool. The tool is modeled by a kind of Petri nets. The dynamic behavior of robot waiting and tasks, process modules, and buffers is well captured by the net model. With the model, this work shows that there is always a one-wafer cyclic schedule that reaches the lower bound of the cycle time of a process-dominant tool. Furthermore, a constant-time algorithm is revealed to find such a schedule for the first time for such multi-cluster tools. An illustrative example is given to show the application and power of this new method. © 2014 IEEE.

Interacting with a random environment, Learning Automata (LAs) are automata that, generally, have the task of learning the optimal action based on responses from the environment. Distinct from the traditional goal of Learning Automata to select only the optimal action out of a set of actions, this paper considers a multiple-action selection problem and proposes a novel class of Learning Automata for selecting an optimal subset of actions. Their objective is to identify the optimal subset: the top k out of r actions. Based on conventional continuous pursuit and discretized pursuit learning schemes, this paper introduces four pursuit learning schemes for selecting the optimal subset, called continuous equal pursuit, discretized equal pursuit, continuous unequal pursuit and discretized unequal pursuit learning schemes, respectively. In conjunction with a reward-inaction learning paradigm, the above four schemes lead to four versions of pursuit Learning Automata for selecting the optimal subset. The simulation results present a quantitative comparison between them.

Recent advances in in-vehicle technologies have paved way to a new era of connectivity. Vehicle manufacturers have already deployed various technologies for driving assistance, anti-theft, and infotainment. They are now developing ways to interface mobile devices with vehicles and provide the customer's smart phone or tablet the ability to send/receive information to/from the car. However, such an integration introduces severe security risks to the vehicle. The in-vehicle network was originally designed to operate in a closed environment and thus, security was not of concern. It has now become an important issue due to an increasing number of external interfaces to the in-vehicle network. Several studies have already shown that an in-vehicle network can be easily compromised just by connecting cheap commercial devices and doing reverse engineering. Although research efforts have been made to secure in-vehicle networks, most of them focused on defining security requirements, or presenting attack scenarios without providing any feasible solution. Also, to the best of our knowledge, there hasn't been any study with a specific focus on understanding and analyzing the security aspects of integrating mobile devices with cars. In this paper, we define the integration model, present the attack scenarios, define the security objectives, and then propose a 3-step verification mechanism that meets our objectives. © 2013 IEEE.

The creation of value-added services by automatic composition of existing ones is gaining a significant momentum as the potential silver bullet in service-oriented architecture. However, service composition faces two aspects of difficulties. First, users' needs present such characteristics as diversity, uncertainty and personalisation; second, the existing services run in a real-world environment that is highly complex and dynamically changing. These difficulties may cause the emergence of nondeterministic choices in the process of service composition, which has gone beyond what the existing automated service composition techniques can handle. According to most of the existing methods, the process model of composite service includes sequence constructs only. This article presents a method to introduce conditional branch structures into the process model of composite service when needed, in order to satisfy users' diverse and personalised needs and adapt to the dynamic changes of real-world environment. UML activity diagrams are used to represent dependencies in composite service. Two types of user preferences are considered in this article, which have been ignored by the previous work and a simple programming language style expression is adopted to describe them. Two different algorithms are presented to deal with different situations. A real-life case is provided to illustrate the proposed concepts and methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PlanetLab, the planetary-scale overlay network, has become the de facto platform for conducting network experiments under real-life realistic conditions, scale, and geographic distribution. Many tools have been developed to manage the PlanetLab resources. However, they do not provide extra experimental capabilities to this network. Currently, PlanetLab only allows experiments at the application level, as lower levels (e.g., TCP level) are shared among all users and modifications to, for example, the TCP stack will affect all users' experiments. In this paper, we present the design of a methodology that allows researchers to implement their new TCP stack, transport algorithms, and protocols on top of PlanetLab. The approach works much like a plug-in that interacts with the PlanetLab nodes without interfering with the operating system or any other running processes. We present a research case study as an example that can make use of such a method to allow for evaluation over PlanetLab. The case study is about testing a new TCP stack, and comparing it to an existing TCP implementation under specific deployment scenarios. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Unidirectional phase singularity in ultrathin metamaterials at exceptional points

Scattering properties of light in metamaterials are similar to those in open quantum systems. Here we propose an ultrathin tailored metamaterial designed to show that one-way zero reflection yielding to topologically stable phase dislocation is responsible for the exceptional point, one of the most important degeneracies in the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In order to bridge the exotic macroscopic optical phenomenon occurring in metamaterials, a phenomenological model under microscopic view is developed and good agreement with the full-blown numerical simulation is found. Our investigation uncovers the capabilities of metamaterials to exhibit extreme optical properties and to provide us with many potential applications such as the suppression of undesired scattering signals in the spectral band ranging from microwaves to visible light.
