This paper studies the processing time of cloud services using the retrying technique for fault tolerance. Specifically, the processing time of a cloud service is modeled and the probability distribution of the processing time is derived considering the effect imposed by retrying tasks in the case of service failures happening. As another important performance metric that can better reflect the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of customers, the percentile of processing time is also studied. The percentile of processing time characterizes a threshold processing time so that a certain percentage of requests can be served in under the threshold value. Relationship between the task failure rate and percentile of processing time is studied through a numerical example. In addition, the percentile of processing time of cloud computing systems using the retrying technique is compared with that of systems using the check-pointing technique.

Locality-Sensitive Bloom Filter for Approximate Membership Query

In many network applications, Bloom filters are used to support exact-matching membership query for their randomized space-efficient data structure with a small probability of false answers. In this paper, we extend the standard Bloom filter to Locality-Sensitive Bloom Filter (LSBF) to provide Approximate Membership Query (AMQ) service. We achieve this by replacing uniform and independent hash functions with locality-sensitive hash functions. Such replacement makes the storage in LSBF to be locality sensitive. Meanwhile, LSBF is space efficient and query responsive by employing the Bloom filter design. In the design of the LSBF structure, we propose a bit vector to reduce False Positives (FP). The bit vector can verify multiple attributes belonging to one member. We also use an active overflowed scheme to significantly decrease False Negatives (FN). Rigorous theoretical analysis (e.g., on FP, FN, and space overhead) shows that the design of LSBF is space compact and can provide accurate response to approximate membership queries. We have implemented LSBF in a real distributed system to perform extensive experiments using real-world traces. Experimental results show that LSBF, compared with a baseline approach and other state-of-the-art work in the literature (SmartStore and LSB-tree), takes less time to respond AMQ and consumes much less storage space.

For more than 30 years, knowledge-based product configuration systems have been successfully applied in many industrial domains. Correspondingly, a large number of advanced techniques and algorithms have been developed in academia and industry to support different aspects of configuration reasoning. While traditional research in the field focused on the configuration of physical artefacts, recognition of the business value of customizable software products led to the emergence of software product line engineering. Despite the significant overlap in research interests, the two fields mainly evolved in isolation. Only limited attempts were made at combining the approaches developed in the different fields. In this paper, we first aim to give an overview of commonalities and differences between software product line engineering and product configuration. We then identify opportunities for cross-fertilization between these fields and finally develop a research agenda to combine their respective techniques. Ultimately, this should lead to a unified configuration approach.

Scheduling theory and algorithms have been well studied in the real-time systems literature. Many useful approaches and solutions have appeared in different problem domains. While their theoretical effectiveness has been extensively discussed, the community is now facing implementation challenges that show the impact of the algorithms in practice. In this paper, we propose a scheduler framework, called ExSched, which enables different schedulers to be developed for different operating system (OS) platforms without any modifications to the OS itself, using a unified interface. The framework will easily keep up with changes in the kernel since it is only dependent on a few kernel primitives. The usefulness of this framework is that scheduling policies can be implemented as external plug-ins. They can simply use the ExSched interface instead of platform-dependent functions, since platform details are abstracted by ExSched. The advantage for industry is that they would more easily keep up with new kernel versions since ExSched does not require patches. The advantage for academia is that we could focus on the development of schedulers instead of tedious and time-consuming installations of patched kernels. Our prototype implementation of ExSched supports Linux and Vx Works and it comes with example schedulers which include hierarchical and multi-core schedulers in addition to traditional fixed-priority scheduling (FPS) and earliest deadline first (EDF) algorithms.

This paper presents the OptBees, an optimization algo-rithm inspired by the processes of collective decision-making by bee colonies. The algorithm was designed with the objective of generat-ing and maintaining diversity, promoting a multimodal search and obtaining multiple local optima without losing the ability of global optimization, thus representing an innovation compared with exis-tent bee-inspired algorithms. It has been tested in five of the twen-ty-five minimization problems proposed for the Optimization Competition of real Parameters of the CEC 2005 Special Session on real-Parameter Optimization, held in the 2005 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC). The results obtained suggest the suitability of the algorithm to exploit multimodality of prob-lems, being successful in the generation and maintenance of diversi-ty and achieving good quality results in global optimization.

In this paper, cross-corpora evaluations are used to analyze the bias of spontaneous facial expression databases. Local binary pattern, Gabor, eigenface and fisherface features are extracted and applied to the four spontaneous expression databases: USTC-NVIE, VAM, Belfast Naturalistic and SEMAINE to recognize arousal (high/low) and valance (positive/negative) respectively. Experimental results indicate that there exists bias among different spontaneous expression databases. The emotion-induction methods, the variety of subjects and the quantity of raters may have caused such a bias.

Photonic crystals realized in LiNbO3 have a great potential to reduce the size and increase the functionality of integrated optical devices. In order to accomplish these aims, fabrication know-how must be mastered yet it remains relatively uncharted. In this work we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic crystal structures in annealed proton exchanged (APE) LiNbO3 waveguides. In our work, channel waveguides were fabricated by photolithography patterning followed by immersing LiNbO 3 wafers in molten benzoic acid at 235°C for 5 h. The thickness and the composition profiles of the APE waveguides were measured using the secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) method. The experimental characterization of the photonic crystal waveguides was performed and a photonic stop band with good sharpness can be observed from the transmission spectra. © 2012 IEEE.
