We develop a framework based on the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) for model-free prediction of the occurrence of extreme events both in time (“when”) and in space (“where”) in nonlinear physical systems of spatial dimension two. The measurements or data are a set of two-dimensional snapshots or images. For a desired time horizon of prediction, a proper labeling scheme can be designated to enable successful training of the DCNN and subsequent prediction of extreme events in time. Given that an extreme event has been predicted to occur within the time horizon, a space-based labeling scheme can be applied to predict, within certain resolution, the location at which the event will occur. We use synthetic data from the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and empirical wind speed data from the North Atlantic Ocean to demonstrate and validate our machine-learning-based prediction framework. The trade-offs among the prediction horizon, spatial resolution, and accuracy are illustrated, and the detrimental effect of spatially biased occurrence of extreme events on prediction accuracy is discussed. The deep learning framework is viable for predicting extreme events in the real world.

Researchers across the globe are seeking to rapidly repurpose existing drugs or discover new drugs to counter the the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). One promising approach is to train machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to screen large numbers of small molecules. As a contribution to that effort, we are aggregating numerous small molecules from a variety of sources, using high-performance computing (HPC) to computer diverse properties of those molecules, using the computed properties to train ML/AI models, and then using the resulting models for screening. In this first data release, we make available 23 datasets collected from community sources representing over 4.2 B molecules enriched with pre-computed: 1) molecular fingerprints to aid similarity searches, 2) 2D images of molecules to enable exploration and application of image-based deep learning methods, and 3) 2D and 3D molecular descriptors to speed development of machine learning models. This data release encompasses structural information on the 4.2 B molecules and 60 TB of pre-computed data. Vascular shunt insertion is a common surgical procedure performed to restore blood flow to damaged tissues temporarily. It usually requires a surgeon and a surgical assistant. We consider three scenarios: (1) a surgeon is available locally;(2) a remote surgeon is available via teleoperation;(3) no surgeon is available. In each scenario, a minimally invasive surgical-assistant da Vinci robot operates in a different mode either by teleoperation or automation. Robotic assistance for this procedure is challenging due to precision and control uncertainty. The role of the robot in this task depends on the availability of a human surgeon. We propose a trimodal framework for vascular shunt insertion assisted by a da Vinci Research Kit (dVRK) robotic surgical assistant (RSA). To help further study for the community, we also present a physics-based simulated environment for shunt insertion built on top of the NVIDIA Isaac ORBIT simulator. We collect a large dataset of trajectories for the shunt insertion environment using ORBIT and implement these trajectories to show the simulator's realism, showcasing the possibility for future work to use the simulator for policy learning. Physical experiments demonstrate a success rate of 65-100% for mode (1), 100% for mode (2), and 75-95% for mode (3) across vessel phantoms with different sizes, color, and material properties. In this article, we consider an Internet of Things (IoT) system in which a sensor delivers updates to a monitor with exponential service time and first-come-first-served (FCFS) discipline. We investigate the freshness of the received updates and propose a new metric termed as age upon decisions (AuD), which is defined as the time elapsed from the generation of each update to the epoch it is used to make decisions (e.g., estimations, inferences, and controls). Within this framework, we aim at improving the freshness of updates at decision epochs by scheduling the update arrival process and the decision-making process. The theoretical results show that: 1) when the decisions are made according to a Poisson process, the average AuD is independent of decision rate and will be minimized if the arrival process is periodic (i.e., deterministic);2) when both the decision process and the arrival process are periodic, the average AuD is larger, but decreases with decision rate to, the average AuD of the corresponding system with the Poisson decisions (i.e., random);and 3) when both the decision process and the arrival process are periodic, the average AuD can be further decreased by optimally controlling the offset between the two processes. For practical IoT systems, therefore, it is suggested to employ periodic arrival processes and random decision processes. Nevertheless, making the periodical updates and decisions with properly controlled offset is also a promising solution, if the timing information of the two processes can be accessed by the monitor. © 2014 IEEE.

Pushing artificial intelligence (AI) from central cloud to network edge has reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the vision of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) in the sixth-generation (6G) era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence, which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the huge amount of data scattered at wireless network edge. In general, realizing edge intelligence corresponds to the process of sensing, communication, and computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and processing, respectively. However, conventional wireless networks design the sensing, communication, and computation separately in a task-agnostic manner, which encounters difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI applications such as auto-driving. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of seamless integrated sensing, communication, and computation (ISCC) in a task-oriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in the downstream AI applications. In view of its growing interest, this article provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the state-of-the-art development, and shedding light on the road ahead. As a novel deep learning model, gcForest has been widely used in various applications. However, the current multi-grained scanning of gcForest produces many redundant feature vectors, and this increases the time cost of the model. To screen out redundant feature vectors, we introduce a hashing screening mechanism for multi-grained scanning and propose a model called HW-Forest which adopts two strategies, hashing screening and window screening. HW-Forest employs perceptual hashing algorithm to calculate the similarity between feature vectors in hashing screening strategy, which is used to remove the redundant feature vectors produced by multi-grained scanning and can significantly decrease the time cost and memory consumption. Furthermore, we adopt a self-adaptive instance screening strategy to improve the performance of our approach, called window screening, which can achieve higher accuracy without hyperparameter tuning on different datasets. A time series is a collection of measurements in chronological order. Discovering patterns from time series is useful in many domains, such as stock analysis, disease detection, and weather forecast. To discover patterns, existing methods often convert time series data into another form, such as nominal/symbolic format, to reduce dimensionality, which inevitably deviates the data values. Moreover, existing methods mainly neglect the order relationships between time series values. To tackle these issues, inspired by order-preserving matching, this paper proposes an Order-Preserving sequential Pattern (OPP) mining method, which represents patterns based on the order relationships of the time series data. An inherent advantage of such representation is that the trend of a time series can be represented by the relative order of the values underneath the time series data. To obtain frequent trends in time series, we propose the OPP-Miner algorithm to mine patterns with the same trend (sub-sequences with the same relative order). OPP-Miner employs the filtration and verification strategies to calculate the support and uses pattern fusion strategy to generate candidate patterns. To compress the result set, we also study finding the maximal OPPs. Experiments validate that OPP-Miner is not only efficient and scalable but can also discover similar sub-sequences in time series. In addition, case studies show that our algorithms have high utility in analyzing the COVID-19 epidemic by identifying critical trends and improve the clustering performance. Network robustness is critical for various societal and industrial networks again malicious attacks. In particular, connectivity robustness and controllability robustness reflect how well a networked system can maintain its connectedness and controllability against destructive attacks, which can be quantified by a sequence of values that record the remaining connectivity and controllability of the network after a sequence of node- or edge-removal attacks. Traditionally, robustness is determined by attack simulations, which are computationally very time-consuming or even practically infeasible. In this paper, an improved method for network robustness prediction is developed based on learning feature representation using convolutional neural network (LFR-CNN). In this scheme, higher-dimensional network data are compressed to lower-dimensional representations, and then passed to a CNN to perform robustness prediction. Extensive experimental studies on both synthetic and real-world networks, both directed and undirected, demonstrate that 1) the proposed LFR-CNN performs better than other two state-of-the-art prediction methods, with significantly lower prediction errors;2) LFR-CNN is insensitive to the variation of the network size, which significantly extends its applicability;3) although LFR-CNN needs more time to perform feature learning, it can achieve accurate prediction faster than attack simulations;4) LFR-CNN not only can accurately predict network robustness, but also provides a good indicator for connectivity robustness, better than the classical spectral measures. © 2022, CC BY.

With network slicing technology, 5G changes the classical mobile network business model from a network-operator-oriented business to a more open system with multiple stakeholders. In this context, a network slice broker plays the role of agency between network resource providers and vertical service providers, to lease and provide on-demand network slice services. In practice, a single network slice broker normally owns limited types of network slices. And a collaboration infrastructure could be built up to enable network slice sharing among multiple network slice brokers, so as to improve user experience, and enhance the resource utilization rate. However, a major challenge with such an infrastructure is how to support fair and secure slice trading process among multiple un-trusted network slice providers. Blockchain technology, on the other side, brings in high opportunities to implement a fair and secure trading system without a trusted third-party. In view of this observation, this paper proposes a design of blockchain-enabled collaboration infrastructure for network slice brokers, where a group of registered brokers can trade their network slices in a fair and secure manner. To enhance the accountability of slice trading records, transactions are verified and sorted by each broker node, which are further packed into blocks and appended to a shared ledger maintained by each member in the collaboration network. More specifically, we design a Proof-of-Majority (PoM) consensus protocol to sort slice trading transactions before packing transaction blocks of the shared ledger. Furthermore, an optimization for the basic PoM protocol is discussed, with dependency resolving strategy to improve system performance. Experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility of our proposal. © 2020 ACM.
