Distributed real-time systems often have some end-to-end timing requirements. Minimizing the maximum end-to-end delay is one of the most important timing constraints we would like to guarantee for quality of services. The network topology of many distributed systems on Internet is often a tree structure. In this paper, we extend our research on distributed pinwheel scheduling from pipeline structure to tree structure for minimizing the maximum end-to-end delay. We derive a tight maximum delay bound between two nodes and a linear-time algorithm to find the minimax delay between two nodes. With this bound and algorithm, it is easier and faster to schedule distributed real-time tasks with distance constraints and minimize the maximum end-to-end delay. Since the general scheduling problem is very difficult (NP-hard), we derive a more efficient heuristic algorithm than previous researches to minimize the maximum end-to-end delay. We also compare the simulation results of our heuristic and previous researches. The distributed pinwheel scheduling model can be used for distance-constrained real-time tasks on tree structure to reduce a lot of the maximum end-to-end delay and provide a predictable result.

Although many high-performance computer systems are now multiprocessor-based, little work has been done in real-time concurrency control of transaction executions in a multiprocessor environment. A real-time concurrency control protocol designed for uniprocessor or distributed environments may not fit the needs of multiprocessor-based real-time database systems because of a lower degree of concurrency of the transaction executions and a larger number of priority inversions. This paper proposes the concept of a priority cap to bound the maximum number of priority inversions in multiprocessor-based real-time database systems to meet transaction deadlines and to explore the abundant computing resources of parallel computer systems. A series of experiments is conducted to evaluate the capability of the proposed methodology in scheduling real-time transactions in a parallel fashion.

This paper discusses the topic of functional behaviour representations from a data exchange point of view. The motivation comes from our work with developing a standard information model for systems engineering data exchange-ISO 10303-233. In this setting it is not sufficient that the exchanged model displays the same behaviour as the original one. When possible, the structure of the original specification shall be maintained. The paper reviews behaviour formalisms identified as being relevant to systems engineering and discusses different options for supporting the behaviour formalisms in the IS010303-233 systems engineering data exchange information model. The structure of the functional behaviour part of the current version of the information model is also outlined.

As the component raises a principal factor in software engineering to ensure the productivity and reusability of the software, component extracting and implementation, component-based system construction, verification of component interfaces, and other related techniques raise significant issues in software engineering. As a reflex of this tendency, a connector model as a subsidiary tool is proposed to describe the interactions between components and software architecture. We propose a method that extracts the domain-specific components for a particular business domain using the connector model and specifies formal descriptions that explain the software architecture. The proposed component extraction method ensures the more earlier identification of components in the development cycle and decreases the number of potential modifications by making an estimate of the interfaces of a component. The formal description of software architecture gains a better understanding of architecture and also is used as a tool for verifying software at a higher abstraction level when changes take place. © 1999 IEEE.

How to Construct Predictable Rule Sets

This paper addresses the problem of unanticipated rule interactions. It characterizes problems with active rules in dynamic manufacturing environments, and formally defines a number of interaction properties such as cascades, rule cycles, and race conditions. The inversion of these properties defines criteria for interaction-free rule sets that form the basis for a compiler that automatically generates active rules. A feasibility study was conducted where an active database system was embedded into a manufacturing control system. A compiler translate high-level manufacturing operations into queries and active rules for the embedded active DBMS. Since the generated rule sets conform to the inverse criteria, they cannot lead to rule cycles, non-termination, or non-determinism.

1 Towards a Standardised Systems Engineering information Model

Data exchange capabilities of contemporary systems engineering tools are, on the whole, limited. The main reason for this is the effort required for implementing tool to tool data exchange ‘bridges’, and the large number of tools available on the market. This paper is one in a suite of three papers presenting the results of the Esprit 20496 - SEDRES. The objective of the project has been to provide the groundwork for a systems engineering information exchange standard within the ISO 10303 (STEP) framework. The companion paper by Johnson et al. (Johnson et al., 1999] provides an overview of the project and a report on the results of SEDRES. In this paper, the focus is on presenting the structure, scope and plans for future extensions of the SEDRES information model. The SEDRES information model has been specifically developed to facilitate data exchange between systems engineering tools. It has also been put forward as input for the standardisation work, that in due time will result in a STEP Application protocol for systems engineering – Application protocol 233. © 1999 The Authors.

An information model supporting core systems engineering design data is presented. The model provides, in conjunction with STEP (ISO 10303) framework services, an infrastructure that facilitates data exchange between design tools used in the systems engineering process. The model has been developed within the SEDRES project (ESPRIT 20496) and will serve as a seed for the standardisation of a future systems engineering application protocol within the STEP framework.

We demonstrate how to utilize the path information available from ITS navigation systems for bandwidth reservation for hand-off and admission control of new connections in mobile cellular networks. By utilizing the path information, we modify the recently proposed bandwidth reservation and admission control scheme with a design goal to keep the hand-off dropping probability below a pre-specified target. While the original scheme utilized a history-based mobility estimation, the modified scheme eases only part of it. Since both the original and modified schemes meet the design goal, the problem is to determine which of the two can admit more new connections for a given traffic condition. Using simulations, the modified scheme aided by the-navigation system is shown to outperform the original scheme even with much less computational requirement.

Motion control and arcade games require a high bandwidth and periodic transfers to meet the needs of more precise control of motors, and more players and more complex graphics in arcade games. There is a common-memory architecture called "Cyclic Memory" because the data is refreshed periodically which is well known in the field of real-time systems. IEEE 1394 has been drawing considerable attention as the need for connecting audio/visual electronics with a unified fast interface increases. We discuss the feasibility of Cyclic Memory on the IEEE 1394 with its isochronous mode. By analyzing the requirements of two prototypical applications, we evaluate the performance and other capabilities of IEEE 1394 and the other networks that have the functionality of Cyclic Memory and discuss their applicability. We also discuss the network reliability based on IEEE 1394 when it is applied to an actual motion control system.
