Task Delay and Energy Consumption Minimization for Low-altitude MEC via Evolutionary Multi-objective Deep Reinforcement Learning

The low-altitude economy (LAE), driven by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other aircraft, has revolutionized fields such as transportation, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. In the upcoming six-generation (6G) era, UAV-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) is particularly crucial in challenging environments such as mountainous or disaster-stricken areas. The computation task offloading problem is one of the key issues in UAV-assisted MEC, primarily addressing the trade-off between minimizing the task delay and the energy consumption of the UAV. In this paper, we consider a UAV-assisted MEC system where the UAV carries the edge servers to facilitate task offloading for ground devices (GDs), and formulate a calculation delay and energy consumption multi-objective optimization problem (CDECMOP) to simultaneously improve the performance and reduce the cost of the system. Then, by modeling the formulated problem as a multi-objective Markov decision process (MOMDP), we propose a multi-objective deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm within an evolutionary framework to dynamically adjust the weights and obtain non-dominated policies. Moreover, to ensure stable convergence and improve performance, we incorporate a target distribution learning (TDL) algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can better balance multiple optimization objectives and obtain superior non-dominated solutions compared to other methods. It is well known that some time-token medium access protocols for local area networks (LANs) like the IEEE 802.4 token bus and the FDDI token ring can guarantee the medium access delay for time-constrained packets. However, a problem which has been largely overlooked is how these protocols can be made to provide a maximum throughput for nontime-constrained packets while guaranteeing the delay bound of time-constrained packets. We first show how the parameters of the IEEE 802.4 token bus and the FDDI token ring can be set to solve the above problem. Then, we design a new timer mechanism for the timed-token protocols which provides the highest guaranteed throughput of nontime-constrained packets among a set of medium access protocols called the token passing protocol, to which most of the existing non-contention LAN protocols belong. We present numerical examples to compare different protocols, all of which have shown the superiority of the proposed protocol to the others.

Deep Robust Reversible Watermarking

Robust Reversible Watermarking (RRW) enables perfect recovery of cover images and watermarks in lossless channels while ensuring robust watermark extraction under lossy channels. However, existing RRW methods, mostly non-deep learning-based, suffer from complex designs, high computational costs, and poor robustness limiting their practical applications. To address these issues, this paper proposes Deep Robust Reversible Watermarking (DRRW), a deep learning-based RRW scheme. DRRW introduces an Integer Invertible Watermark Network (iIWN) to achieve an invertible mapping between integer data distributions, fundamentally addressing the limitations of conventional RRW approaches. Unlike traditional RRW methods requiring task-specific designs for different distortions, DRRW adopts an encoder-noise layer-decoder framework, enabling adaptive robustness against various distortions through end-to-end training. During inference, the cover image and watermark are mapped into an overflowed stego image and latent variables. Arithmetic coding efficiently compresses these into a compact bitstream, which is embedded via reversible data hiding to ensure lossless recovery of both the image and watermark. To reduce pixel overflow, we introduce an overflow penalty loss, significantly shortening the auxiliary bitstream while improving both robustness and stego image quality. Additionally, we propose an adaptive weight adjustment strategy that eliminates the need to manually preset the watermark loss weight, ensuring improved training stability and performance. Experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that DRRW achieves notable performance advantages. Compared to state-of-the-art RRW methods, DRRW improves robustness and reduces embedding, extraction, and recovery complexities by 55.14×, 5.95×, and 3.57×, respectively. Temporal processing is fundamental for both biological and artificial intelligence systems, as it enables the comprehension of dynamic environments and facilitates timely responses. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) excel in handling such data with high efficiency, owing to their rich neuronal dynamics and sparse activity patterns. Given the recent surge in the development of SNNs, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive evaluation of their temporal processing capabilities. In this paper, we first conduct an in-depth assessment of commonly used neuromorphic benchmarks, revealing critical limitations in their ability to evaluate the temporal processing capabilities of SNNs. To bridge this gap, we further introduce a benchmark suite consisting of three temporal processing tasks characterized by rich temporal dynamics across multiple timescales. Utilizing this benchmark suite, we perform a thorough evaluation of recently introduced SNN approaches to elucidate the current status of SNNs in temporal processing. Our findings indicate significant advancements in recently developed spiking neuron models and neural architectures regarding their temporal processing capabilities, while also highlighting a performance gap in handling long-range dependencies when compared to state-of-the-art non-spiking models. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can be used to assist maritime wireless communications for data transmission across wide-ranging areas. However, extensive coverage of LEO satellites, combined with openness of channels, can cause the communication process to suffer from security risks. This paper presents a low-altitude friendly-jamming LEO satellite-maritime communication system enabled by a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to ensure data security at the physical layer. Since such a system requires trade-off policies that balance the secrecy rate and energy consumption of the UAV to meet evolving scenario demands, we formulate a secure satellite-maritime communication multi-objective optimization problem (SSMCMOP). In order to solve the dynamic and long-term optimization problem, we reformulate it into a Markov decision process. We then propose a transformer-enhanced soft actor critic (TransSAC) algorithm, which is a generative artificial intelligence-enable deep reinforcement learning approach to solve the reformulated problem, so that capturing global dependencies and diversely exploring weights. Simulation results demonstrate that the TransSAC outperforms various baselines, and achieves an optimal secrecy rate while effectively minimizing the energy consumption of the UAV. Edge inference (EI) is a key solution to address the growing challenges of delayed response times, limited scalability, and privacy concerns in cloud-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) inference. However, deploying DNN models on resource-constrained edge devices faces more severe challenges, such as model storage limitations, dynamic service requests, and privacy risks. This paper proposes a novel framework for privacy-aware joint DNN model deployment and partition optimization to minimize long-term average inference delay under resource and privacy constraints. Specifically, the problem is formulated as a complex optimization problem considering model deployment, user-server association, and model partition strategies. To handle the NP-hardness and future uncertainties, a Lyapunov-based approach is introduced to transform the long-term optimization into a single-time-slot problem, ensuring system performance. Additionally, a coalition formation game model is proposed for edge server association, and a greedy-based algorithm is developed for model deployment within each coalition to efficiently solve the problem. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithms effectively reduce inference delay while satisfying privacy constraints, outperforming baseline approaches in various scenarios. The automatic detection of defects in industrial photovoltaic film is crucial for ensuring the reliability of photovoltaic modules. Key challenges include limited defect samples, interclass feature similarities, and interference from complex backgrounds. Existing deep learning-based methods require large-scale datasets and focus solely on visual data, which limits their effectiveness in few-shot defect detection (FSDD). To address these challenges, we propose Contextual Ensemble Language-Image multimodal Network (CELIN), which enhances FSDD in photovoltaic films by incorporating textual information through prompt tuning. Unlike traditional language-image models that rely on single fixed text prompts, CELIN employs a position-aware context ensemble strategy to integrate position-specific prompt vectors, enabling the model to capture global contextual information and reduce background interference. In addition, a cross class mask method is introduced to differentiate between similar defect categories by blocking interclass interactions during attention computation, thereby minimizing misclassification. Extensive experiments on our own few-shot photovoltaic film defect dataset and various public benchmarks demonstrates that CELIN significantly outperforms existing methods. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

The Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) paradigm is anticipated to be a cornerstone of the upcoming 6G networks. In order to optimize the use of wireless resources, 6G ISAC systems need to harness the communication data payload signals, which are inherently random, for both sensing and communication (S&C) purposes. This tutorial paper provides a comprehensive technical overview of the fundamental theory and signal processing methodologies for ISAC transmission with random communication signals. We begin by introducing the deterministic-random tradeoff (DRT) between S&C from an information-theoretic perspective, emphasizing the need for specialized signal processing techniques tailored to random ISAC signals. Building on this foundation, we review the core signal models and processing pipelines for communication-centric ISAC systems, and analyze the average squared auto-correlation function (ACF) of random ISAC signals, which serves as a fundamental performance metric for multi-target ranging tasks. Drawing insights from these theoretical results, we outline the design principles for the three key components of communication-centric ISAC systems: modulation schemes, constellation design, and pulse shaping filters. The goal is to either enhance sensing performance without compromising communication efficiency or to establish a scalable tradeoff between the two. We then extend our analysis from a single-antenna ISAC system to its multi-antenna counterpart, discussing recent advancements in multiinput multi-output (MIMO) precoding techniques specifically designed for random ISAC signals. Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.
