Data availability is a challenging issue for large- scale cluster file systems built upon thousands of individual storage devices. Replication is a well-known solution used to improve data availability. However, how to efficiently guarantee replicas consistency under concurrent conflict mutations remains a challenge. Moreover, how to quickly recover replica consistency from a storage server crash or storage device failure is also a tough problem. In this paper, we present a replication-based data availability mechanism designed for a large-scale cluster file system prototype named LionFS. Unlike other replicated storage systems that serialize replica updates, LionFS introduces a relaxed consistency model to enable concurrent updating all replicas for a mutation operation, greatly reducing the latency of operations. LionFS ensures replica consistency if applications use file locks to synchronize the concurrent conflict mutations. Another novelty of this mechanism is its light-weight log, which only records failed mutations and imposes no overhead on failure-free execution and low overhead when some storage devices are unavailable. Furthermore, recovery of replica consistency needs not stop the file system services and running applications. Performance evaluation shows that our solution achieves 50-70% higher write performance than serial replica updates. The logging overhead is shown to be low, and the recovery time is proportional to the amount of data written during the failure.

In this paper we propose a new neural network architecture that deploys and extended Kalman filter (EKF) based learning algorithm. We used the new neural network for the prediction of speech signals. Simulation results show that the neural networks leads to better performance than the well known linear predictor coefficients (LPC) that uses Levinson-Durbin algorithm.

Wireless sensor networks are deployed for the purpose of sensing and monitoring an area of interest. Sensors in the sensor network can suffer from both random and systematic bias problems. Even when the sensors are properly calibrated at the time of their deployment, they develop drift in their readings leading to erroneous inferences being made by the network. The drift in this context is defined as a slow, unidirectional, long-term change in the sensor measurements. In this paper we present a novel algorithm for detecting and correcting sensors drifts by utilising the spatio-temporal correlation between neigbouring sensors. Based on the assumption that neighbouring sensors have correlated measurements and that the instantiation of drift in a sensor is uncorrelated with other sensors, each sensor runs a support vector regression algorithm on its neigbourspsila corrected readings to obtain a predicted value for its measurements. It then uses this predicted data to self-assess its measurement and detect and correct its drift using a Kalman filter. The algorithm is run recursively and is totally decentralized. We demonstrate using real data obtained from the Intel Berkeley laboratory that our algorithm successfully suppresses drifts developed in sensors and thereby prolongs the effective lifetime of the network.

This paper presents a grid portal for protein secondary structure prediction developed by using services of Aneka, a .NET-based enterprise grid technology. The portal is used by research scientists to discover new prediction structures in a parallel manner. An SVM (support vector machine)-based prediction algorithm is used with 64 sample protein sequences as a case study to demonstrate the potential of enterprise grids.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders are rarely apparent during the neonatal period, and if they are not treated early, irreversible damage, such as mental retardation, or even death, may occur. Therefore, the practice of newborn screening is important to the prevention of permanent disabilities in newborns. In this paper, we propose a newborn screening system that uses Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate raw data on the concentrations of metabolic substances obtained from tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) to determine if a newborn has a metabolic disorder. As per the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we designed the system using web services techniques, which are suitable for integrating heterogeneous platforms, protocols, and applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems (HIS) or other related HIS. © 2008 IEEE.

Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device which is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, these power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which causes the degradation of the entire system performance. This paper presents the application of DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulsed loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial immune system (AIS) is proposed. The optimal parameters of the controller are first found using particle swarm optimization. This provides a sort of innate immunity to common system disturbances. For unusual system disturbances, these optimal parameters are modified online, thus providing adaptive immunity in the control system. To evaluate the performance of the DSTATCOM and the AIS adaptive controller, a ship power system is developed in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. The effectiveness of the DSTATCOM and the AIS controller is examined for pulsed loads of different magnitudes and durations.

The clinical symptoms of metabolic disorders during neonatal periods are often not apparent. If not treated earlier, irreversible damages such as mental retardation or even death may occur. Therefore, practicing the newborn screening is essential to prevent newborns from these damages. In the paper, we propose a newborn screening system using Support Vector Machines (SVM) classification techniques to evaluate, interpret, and determine whether a newborn has metabolic disorder diseases. The raw data, i.e., substances concentrations, were collected from the Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS). In addition, based on the concept of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), we design the system under Web Services .NET environment. The system provides features including heterogeneous platforms, protocols, as well as applications. It can be integrated seamlessly into National Taiwan University Hospital Information Systems later.

In this paper, a role-based access control (KBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called multi-role based access control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. The object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data; 2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses; and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.
