Lattice Boltzmann algorihms are a mesoscopic representation of nonlinear continuum physics (like Navier-Stokes, magnetohydro dynamics (MHD), Gross- Pitaevskii equations) which are ideal for parallel supercomputers because they transform the difficult nonlinear convective macroscopic derivatives into purely local moments of distribution functions. The macroscopic nonlinearities are recovered by relaxation distribution functions in the collision operator whose dependence on the macroscopic velocity is algebraically nonlinear and thus purely local. Unlike standard computational fluid dynamics codes, there is no loss in parallelization in handling arbitrary geometric boundaries, e.g., using bounce-back rules from kinetic theory. By encoding detailed balance into the collision operator through the introduction of discrete H-function, the lattice Boltzmann algorithm can be made unconditionally stable for arbitrary high Reynolds numbers. It is shown that this approach is a special case of a quantum lattice Boltzmann algorithm that entangles local qubits through unitary collision operators and which is ideally parallelized on quantum computer architectures. Here we consider turbulence simulations using 2,048 PEs on a 1,6003-spatial grid. A connection is found between the rate of change of enstrophy and the onset of laminar-to- turbulent flows.

This paper presents a highly efficient and accurate link-quality measurement framework, called EAR (Efficient and Accurate link-quality monitoR), for multi-hop wireless mesh networks, that has several salient features. First, it exploits three complementary measurement schemes: passive, cooperative, and active monitoring. EAR maximizes the measurement accuracy by (i) dynamically and adaptively adopting one of these schemes and (ii) opportunistically exploiting the unicast application traffic present in the network, while minimizing the measurement overhead. Second, EAR effectively identifies the existence of wireless link asymmetry by measuring the quality of each link in both directions of the link, thus improving the utilization of network capacity by up to 114%. Finally, its reliance on both the network layer and the IEEE 802.11-based device driver solutions makes EAR easily deployable in existing multi-hop wireless mesh networks without system recompilation or MAC firmware modification. EAR has been evaluated extensively via both n.s-2-based simulation and experimentation on our Linux-based implementation. Both simulation and experimentation results have shown EAR to provide highly accurate link-quality measurements with minimum overhead. Copyright 2006 ACM.

This paper presents an intuitive and simple-to-implement control scheme to improve the performance of three-phase boost-type PWM rectifiers under harmonic and unbalanced input conditions. Unlike most other control strategies, the proposed method does not need to extract either the harmonic or the negative-sequence components in the supply voltages and currents. A near-synchronous reference frame is used to determine the positive-sequence fundamental-frequency component in the input voltages. Utilizing only the extracted component, the dc-link voltage control and power factor control are implemented independently to determine the phase angle and magnitude of the PWM reference voltage. The commanded rectifier voltage adjustments are superimposed upon the grid voltages in such a way that the distortions (both harmonic and negative sequence components) are effectively cancelled. By employing a near-synchronous reference frame, no line-synchronization algorithm or hardware PLL is needed, so very little computational effort is required for its implementation. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs very well under extreme harmonic and unbalanced conditions such as when one or even two phases of the grid voltages are zero. In order to further verify its effectiveness, a laboratory hardware platform has been developed. © 2006 IEEE.

In high-power adjustable speed motor drives, such as those used in electric ship propulsion systems, active filters provide a viable solution to mitigating harmonic related issues caused by diode or thyristor rectifier front-ends. To handle the large compensation currents and provide better thermal management, two or more paralleled semiconductor switching devices are often used. In this paper, a novel topology is proposed where two active filter inverters are connected with tapped reactors to share the compensation currents. The proposed active filter topology can also produce seven voltage levels, which significantly reduces the switching current ripple and the size of ripple filters. Based on the joint redundant state selection strategy, a current-balancing algorithm is proposed to keep the reactor magnetizing current to a minimum. It is shown through simulation that the proposed active filter can achieve high overall system performance. The system is also implemented on a real-time digital simulator to further verify its effectiveness. © 2006 IEEE.

The Software Communications Architecture (SCA), which has been adopted as an SDR (Software Defined Radio) Forum standard, provides a framework that successfully exploits common design patterns of distributed, real-time, and object-oriented embedded systems software. We have fully implemented the SCA v2.2 in C++. During this implementation process, we have encountered the lack of a suitable design pattern for releasing the SCA applications. Unfortunately, design patterns for releasing objects have been neither extensively addressed nor well investigated as opposed to creational design patterns. This is largely due to the fact that such releasing design patterns are highly dependent on programming languages. In this paper, we investigate three viable design patterns for releasing the SCA applications in C++ and discuss their pros and cons. In addition, we select the most portable and thus most reusable pattern, which we name Vulture design pattern, among those alternatives and detail our specific implementation. © 2006 IEEE.

Heuristic approaches are traditionally applied to find the size and location of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices in a small power system. Nevertheless, more sophisticated methods are required for placing them in a large power network. Recently, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique has been applied to solve power engineering optimization problems giving better results than classical methods. This paper shows the application of PSO for optimal sizing and allocation of a Static Compensator (STATCOM) in a power system. A 45 bus system (part of the Brazilian power network) is used as an example to illustrate the technique. Results show that the PSO is able to find the best solution with statistical significance and a high degree of convergence. A Detailed description of the method, results and conclusions are also presented. © 2006 IEEE.

Gene regulatory inference from time series gene expression data, generated from DNA microarray, has become increasingly important in investigating genes functions and unveiling fundamental cellular processes. Computational methods in machine learning and neural networks play an active role in analyzing the obtained data. Here, we investigate the performance of particle swarm optimization (PSO) on the reconstruction of gene networks, which is modeled with recurrent neural networks (RNN). The experimental results on a synthetic data set are presented to show the parameter effects of PSO on RNN training and the effectiveness of the proposed method in revealing the gene relations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Ethernet is the most pervasive communication technology in use today. It is a standard for connecting computers to form a local area network and provides a common method for the exchange of data. In this paper, we propose a Linux solution, BondingPlus, to support real-time control and boost bandwidth using multiple network interface cards connected to regular switching hubs in an Ethernet environment. BondingPlus schedules packets in the data link layer without modification to the hardware or operating system in the host machine. real-time packets can be transmitted via one or several dedicated bonding Ethernet interfaces, and there is no competition with low priority packets. Transmission delay and network jitter for real-time packets can be dramatically reduced. Furthermore, bandwidth can be increased in proportion to the number of bonding Ethernet interfaces under both TCP and UDP transmission. Various types of systems, such as clustering and parallel systems, can be enhanced at minimal hardware cost.

Voltage stability is a key issue to achieve the uninterrupted operation of wind farms equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) during grid faults. A Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is applied to a power network which includes a DFIG driven by a wind turbine, for steady state voltage regulation and transient voltage stability support. The control schemes of the DFIG rotor-side converter, grid-side converter and the STATCOM are suitably designed and coordinated. The system is implemented in real-time on a realtime Digital Simulator (RTDS®). Results show that the STATCOM improves the transient voltage stability and therefore helps the wind turbine generator system to remain in service during grid faults. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a robot middleware technology named Robot Software Communications Architecture (RSCA) for its use in networked home service robots. The RSCA provides a standard operating environment for the robot applications together with a framework that expedites the development of such applications. The operating environment is comprised of a real-time operating system, a communication middleware, and a deployment middleware. Particularly, the deployment middleware supports the reconfiguration of component-based robot applications including installation, creation, start, stop, tear-down, and un-installation, In designing RSCA, we have adopted a middleware called SCA from the software defined radio domain and extend it since the original SCA lacks the real-time guarantees and appropriate event services. We have fully implemented RSCA and performed measurements to quantify its run-time performance. Our implementation clearly shows the viability of RSCA. © 2006 IEEE.
