An adaptive Mamdani based fuzzy logic controller has been designed for controlling a static compensator (STATCOM) in a multimachine power system. Such a controller does not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently control a STATCOM during different disturbances in the network. A model free approach using the controller output error is applied for training purposes that adaptively changes the controller output parameters based on a gradient descent method. Moreover, shrinking span membership functions are used for a more stable and accurate control performance. Simulation results show that the proposed controller outperforms the conventional PI controller during dynamic and transient disturbances

Controllable series line compensation by series flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices can provide significant transient stability improvement and effective power oscillation damping. The work presented in this paper gives an overview of control issues of series FACTS devices contributing to stable power system operation when applying suitable controllers with appropriately selected system measurements. Firstly, this paper describes two internal control schemes, which are based on the automatic power flow control mode and line impedance compensation mode, for a switching converter type based series FACTS device. Secondly, it shows that the external (secondary) control can give a solution for overall system optimization by providing well-established supplementary controls and adaptive reference changes to the internal controller. Case studies are presented with simulation results by applying the proposed controllers to the series FACTS device on a power system

Over the last few years, grid technologies have progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way of service provisioning based on utility computing models. Users consume these services based on their QoS (quality of service) requirements. In such "pay-per-use" grids, workflow execution cost must be considered during scheduling based on users' QoS constraints. In this paper, we propose a cost-based workflow scheduling algorithm that minimizes execution cost while meeting the deadline for delivering results. It can also adapt to the delays of service executions by rescheduling unexecuted tasks. We also attempt to optimally solve the task scheduling problem in branches with several sequential tasks by modeling the branch as a Markov decision process and using the value iteration method

In this paper, our contributions are two-fold: First, we enhance the Min-Min and Sufferage heuristics under three risk modes driven by security concerns. Second, we propose a new Space-time Genetic Algorithm (STGA) for trusted job scheduling, which is very fast and easy to implement. Under our new model, a job can possibly fail if the site security level is lower than the job security demand. We consider three security-driven heuristic modes: secure, risky, and f-risky. The secure mode always dispatches jobs to secure sites meeting the job security demands. The risky mode allocates jobs to any available resource site, taking whatever the risk it may face. The f-risky mode tries to limit the risk to be at most certain probability f. Our extensive simulation results indicated that the proposed STGA is highly effective in scheduling two types of practical workloads: NAS (Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation) and PSA (parameter-sweep application). The STGA outperforms the Min-Min and Sufferage heuristics under three risk modes, in terms of a wide range of performance metrics including makespan, average response time, site utilization, slowdown ratio, and job failure rate.

Backpropagation algorithm is the most commonly used algorithm for training artificial neural networks. While being a straightforward procedure, it suffers from extensive computations, relatively slow convergence speed and possible divergence for certain conditions. The efficiency of this method as the training algorithm of a radial basis function neural network (RBFN) is compared with that of particle swarm optimization, for neural network based identification of a small power system with a static compensator. The comparison of the two methods is based on the convergence speed and robustness of each method.

Many control systems have large, infinite state space that can not be easily abstracted. One method to analyse and verify these systems is reachability analysis. It is frequently used for air traffic control and power plants. Because of lack of complete information about the environment or unpredicted changes, the stochastic approach is a viable alternative. In this paper, different ways of introducing rechability under uncertainty are presented. A new concept of stochastic bisimulation is introduced and its connection with the reachability analysis is established. The work is mainly motivated by safety critical situations in air traffic control (like collision detection and avoidance) and formal tools are based on stochastic analysis.

A distributed, real time, collaborative visualization (DRCV) system for four dimensional datasets like fMRI images, can be a valuable tool to support scientific and medical research. Software applications supporting DRCV are lagging due to complex challenges, such as real time rendering, coordinated, real time navigation, dataset management, data location transparency, heterogeneous node management, data replication policies, and so on. In addition, people using DRCV tools are tightened to computing devices with specific configuration, which lower opportunities for remote visualization collaborations. We present a novel middleware to facilitate development of DRCV applications which guarantee high data availability and scalability in terns of collaborative groups and members, and are adaptable to computing devices with varying display capabilities. We also show our prototype implementation of this middleware with performance measurements.

On the field of battle, a continual flow of information is necessary to achieve information superiority. The required information potentially originates from numerous information producers. Unfortunately, due to dynamic and often dangerous conditions, these information producers can be incapacitated or destroyed. To be successful, a battlefield information system must provide a continuous flow of information and thus adaptability and fault tolerance are key features. In this paper, we show how we build adaptive and fault tolerance information systems using an organizational model. We introduce our organizational model and provide details pertaining to its use in the development of a battlefield information system.

This paper proposes a model for caching database data in mobile ad-hoc networks through caching the queries and their responses. The approach makes a distinction between the queries and their responses and caches them on separate mobile nodes. This method is driven by the fact that queries do not become invalid unless when the design of the database entities changes while data changes depending on the application that feeds information into the database. The architecture we use is hierarchical and employs three types of designated nodes: a query directory (QD), service manager (SM), and caching node (CN). The one or more QDs are responsible for caching the queries and are assigned and supervised by the SM that also oversees the mobility activities and the availability of nodes in the network and makes "managerial" decisions accordingly, including appointing backup nodes. With this model, any node that joins the ad hoc network will either contribute services to other nodes (willingness to become an SM, a QD, or a CN) or consume services offered by other nodes. This model attempts to coordinate the query executing and query caching mechanisms in a seamless manner while maintaining minimal communication among nodes. We present preliminary results of a model that was simulated using the NS-2 software and show the viability of the proposed approach.
