When some application scenarios need to use semantic segmentation technology, like automatic driving, the primary concern comes to real-time performance rather than extremely high segmentation accuracy. To achieve a good trade-off between speed and accuracy, two-branch architecture has been proposed in recent years. It treats spatial information and semantics information separately which allows the module to be composed of two networks both not heavy. However, the process of fusing features with two different scales becomes a performance bottleneck for many nowaday two-branch models. In this research, we design a new fusion mechanism for two-branch architecture which is guided by attention computation. To be precise, we use the Dual-Guided Attention (DGA) module we proposed to replace some multi-scale transformations with the calculation of attention which means we only use several attention layers of near linear complexity to achieve performance comparable to frequently-used multi-layer fusion. To ensure that our module can be effective, we use Residual U-blocks (RSU) to build one of the two branches in our networks which aims to obtain better multi-scale features. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes and CamVid dataset show the effectiveness of our method. On Cityscapes, our light version network without pretrain weight can achieve 71.1% mIoU at 163 FPS on a single Nvidia RTX 3070 using full resolution images(1024×2048pix). And the large version can achieve 77.9% mIoU with a speed of 43 FPS which still reaches the real-time criterion. AME4163: Principles of engineering Design is a design, build and test course offered at the university of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Throughout the semester students are expected to reflect on authentic and immersive experiences and write Take-aways and Learning Statements. At the end of the semester each student submits a summative Semester Learning Essay. Between 2019-2021 we collected about 10,000 Take-aways and Learning Statements from the Semester Learning Essays of nearly 400 students. In this paper, we attempt to help instructors gain insight of what students have learned through these materials and thence improve the delivery of the course in the future. We analyze their Take-aways from summative Semester Learning Essays by using dictionary-based sentiment analysis to assess students' subjective feelings toward what they have learned. The results prove that we gain insight into their learning thereby providing instructors with evidence-based guidance on modifying the course from different perspectives. The method proposed is generalizable to courses that involve authentic immersive experiences. © 2023 IEEE.

Photon counting imaging detector based on microchannel plate (MCP) and position-sensitive anode readout has the ability to detect single photon, and has been widely used in space detection, high-energy physics and bioluminescence imaging. Traditionally, the detector consists of photocathode, electron multiplication part and position decoding part, in which position decoding is accomplished by position sensitive anode. The delay line anode not only has high spatial resolution and large detection area, but also has high count rate. Based on the principle of delay line decoding, an induction readout cross delay line anode (XDL) is designed and fabricated. And the performance of the detector is tested by using the experimental system. The results show that the width of XDL anode output pulse (FWHM) is about 4ns, the spatial resolution of the detector is better than 100μm, and the dark count rate is 2s). © 2025 SPIE.

Group Emotion Recognition (GER) seeks to identify emotional states within multi-person groups. The complexity of the environment and the reliance on a single group emotion label often result in noisy individuals with inconsistent emotional expressions, hampering accurate emotion classification. Mainstream GER networks attempt to downweight noisy individuals, but when their numbers are high and over-relying on a single group label, the negative impact of noise on individuals remains significant, further complicating classification and diminishing accuracy. To address these limitations, we propose the Multi-Scale Contextual and Noise Suppression Model (MCon-NSM), a novel framework that enhances GER by capturing fine-grained interaction contexts and collaboratively suppressing noise at both the individual and group label levels. Extensive experiments on the GAF series datasets demonstrate that our method achieves results comparable to state-of-the-art techniques, validating its effectiveness in mitigating noise in GER. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper studies quasi-Newton methods for solving nonlinear equations. We propose block variants of both good and bad Broyden's methods, which enjoy explicit local superlinear convergence rates. Our block good Broyden's method has a faster condition-number-free convergence rate than existing Broyden's methods because it takes the advantage of multiple rank modification on Jacobian estimator. On the other hand, our block bad Broyden's method directly estimates the inverse of the Jacobian provably, which reduces the computational cost of the iteration. Our theoretical results provide some new insights on why good Broyden's method outperforms bad Broyden's method in most of the cases. The empirical results also demonstrate the superiority of our methods and validate our theoretical analysis. © 2023 Neural information processing systems foundation. All rights reserved.

Anomaly detection refers to the identification of data objects that deviate from the general data distribution. One of the important challenges in anomaly detection is handling high-dimensional data, especially when it contains a large number of redundant attributes. Although traditional Isolation Forest (iForest) and Extended Isolation Forest (EIF) have performed well in anomaly detection, the detection accuracy is still extremely influenced by redundant attributes. In this paper, we propose a two-tier architecture named RS-EIF, to alleviate the negative impact of redundant attributes. Specifically, the RS-EIF combines the rough set theory and EIF algorithm and provides an effective basis for the EIF-based anomaly detection method by removing redundant attributes with rough set theory. Experimental results show that the RS-EIF algorithm performs better than the iForest and EIF algorithms in terms of anomaly detection rate, and the results of the combination of rough set theory and EIF are more prominent compared to the other combination methods. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper explores the size-invariance of evaluation metrics in Salient Object Detection (SOD), especially when multiple targets of diverse sizes co-exist in the same image. We observe that current metrics are size-sensitive, where larger objects are focused, and smaller ones tend to be ignored. We argue that the evaluation should be size-invariant because bias based on size is unjustified without additional semantic information. In pursuit of this, we propose a generic approach that evaluates each salient object separately and then combines the results, effectively alleviating the imbalance. We further develop an optimization framework tailored to this goal, achieving considerable improvements in detecting objects of different sizes. Theoretically, we provide evidence supporting the validity of our new metrics and present the generalization analysis of SOD. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Carrying out remote sensing refinement identification of forest land in complex environment is of great significance for timely mapping of forest distribution. Aiming at the problem that remote sensing images have bias in the extraction of forest land information data, based on the semantic segmentation algorithm Unet, combining the ResNet50 deep learning network, the attention mechanism module and the feature pyramid structure, we construct RAF-Unet (ResNet+Attention+FPN+Unet) to improve the extraction of forest land information data. The ResNet50 classification network is used as the encoder of the Unet network to extract the feature maps at five different scales;then, the attention mechanism module is introduced in the decoder stage of the Unet network to extract the key task goal information by learning the weight values of the features;finally, the feature pyramid structure is used in the output stage of the encoder to fuse the information from the shallow network and the deep network to extract the remote sensing forest land information in the image. The results show that the RAF-Unet algorithm outperforms the Unet algorithm in all the indexes, with a precision of 95.24%, a recall of 91.80%, an F1-score value of 93.49%, an intersection over union of 87.63%, and an accuracy of 93.68%;the validity of the modules is verified by the ablation experiments, and the ResNet network, the attention mechanism, and the feature pyramid structure are all effective in improve the classification effect. It helps the forestry department to better manage and dynamically monitor forestry information, which is of great significance to the scientific development, utilization and protection of forest land resources. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Graph-based Cognitive Diagnosis (CD) has attracted much research interest due to its strong ability on inferring students' proficiency levels on knowledge concepts. While graph-based CD models have demonstrated remarkable performance, we contend that they still cannot achieve optimal performance due to the neglect of edge heterogeneity and uncertainty. Edges involve both correct and incorrect response logs, indicating heterogeneity. Meanwhile, a response log can have uncertain semantic meanings, e.g., a correct log can indicate true mastery or fortunate guessing, and a wrong log can indicate a lack of understanding or a careless mistake. In this paper, we propose an Informative Semantic-aware Graph-based Cognitive Diagnosis model (ISG-CD), which focuses on how to utilize the heterogeneous graph in CD and minimize effects of uncertain edges. Specifically, to explore heterogeneity, we propose a semantic-aware graph neural networks based CD model. To minimize effects of edge uncertainty, we propose an Informative Edge Differentiation layer from an information bottleneck perspective, which suggests keeping a minimal yet sufficient reliable graph for CD in an unsupervised way. We formulate this process as maximizing mutual information between the reliable graph and response logs, while minimizing mutual information between the reliable graph and the original graph. After that, we prove that mutual information maximization can be theoretically converted to the classic binary cross entropy loss function, while minimizing mutual information can be realized by the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence ***, we adopt an alternating training strategy for optimizing learnable parameters of both the semantic-aware graph neural networks based CD model and the edge differentiation layer. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of ISG-CD.
