As a data-driven science, machine learning requires vast amounts of training data and computational resources. However, for highly privacy-sensitive data, it is crucial to protect the privacy of the data during both the training and utilization of machine learning models. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving machine learning approach using autoencoders and differential privacy mechanisms to safeguard data privacy while minimizing the impact on data availability. Specifically, we augment logistic regression and ResNet18 models with different architectures of autoencoders to perform data encryption? without compromising the machine learning tasks. Additionally, we employ differential privacy mechanisms to introduce gradient perturbations in the encoding part of the autoencoder, enhancing the algorithm’s security and further protecting data privacy. We also design the cosine similarity between the encoded and original data as a metric for evaluating data privacy, considering model performance, privacy budget, and data privacy collectively to balance data availability and privacy. Extensive experiments conducted on MNIST, CIFAR-10, PathMNIST, and BloodMNIST datasets demonstrate that for simple logistic regression models handling easily classifiable datasets, employing simple autoencoder structures can enhance classification accuracy, with significant performance impact after adding differential privacy. For ResNet18, utilizing convolutional autoencoders for data encryption generally has minimal impact on model classification performance and can even improve accuracy in most cases. Adding differential privacy has minor effects on model classification performance. Selecting appropriate model structures and privacy budgets for different usage scenarios can ensure both data availability and privacy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Word embedding learning is a powerful technique to represent words' rich semantics as low-dimensional vectors, but it may encode harmful social biases. Such biases can leave negative impacts on downstream applications that rely on word embeddings, e.g., text classification and sentiment analysis. In this work, we design a novel approach to debias word embeddings using a causal graph that separates gender and semantic information within words. Our method is theoretically interpretable and can effectively alleviate the issue of gender bias from words in real-world corpora without destructing their semantic meanings. We perform a comprehensive comparison for our proposed approach with existing state-of-the-art techniques using a range of evaluation metrics and tasks, and demonstrate that our method can not only mitigate bias mixed in word embeddings, but also improve their performance on downstream tasks. © 2023 IEEE.

Visual question generation (VQG) task aims to generate high-quality questions based on the input image. Current methods primarily focus on generating questions containing specified content utilizing answers or question types as constraints. However, these constraints make it challenging to control the topic of generated questions (e.g., conversation or test subject topics) for various applications. Thus, it is necessary to utilize topics as constraints to guide question generation. Considering that there are many topics and it is almost impossible for human annotations to cover them, we propose the cross-topic learning VQG (CTL-VQG) task, which aims to generate questions related to unseen topics in cross-topic scenarios. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-guided cross-topic visual question generation (KC-VQG) model to extract unseen topic-related information for question generation. Specifically, an image-topic feature extractor is introduced in our model to extract topic-related intuitive visual features;an image-topic knowledge extractor is used to extract and select the most appropriate topic-related implicit knowledge from large language models for generating questions. Extensive experiments show that our model outperforms baselines and can effectively generate unseen topic-related questions in cross-topic scenarios. © 2024 ELRA Language Resource Association: CC BY-NC 4.0.

When natural or man-made disasters occur at sea, a maritime unmanned rescue system-of-systems (MURSoSs), as an important guarantee for the safety of people's lives and property, has a rapid response to emergency rescue services. In the design process of MURSoSs, it is often faced with problems such as unexplainable mechanisms and inaccurate modeling due to the characteristics of multi-level coupling and irregular emergence. A design method of MURSoSs based on an attention Transformer is proposed. First, this paper decomposes the MURSoSs into a multi-level organizational structure composed of individual performance, group structure, and overall effectiveness. Second, the maritime unmanned rescue simulation environment is constructed, to obtain the multi-level evolution data of group structure and overall effectiveness under different individual performance, and the attention Transformer is used to mine the functional correlation relationship between levels. Finally, the experimental simulation prediction is carried out by using this function relationship. Taking the design of MURSoSs as an example, the results show that the constructed model accurately quantifies the correlation relationship between levels and effectively reveal the internal logic of the emergence process of maritime rescue. © 2024 IEEE.

Applying large language models (LLMs) to academic API usage shows promise in reducing researchers' efforts to seek academic information. However, current LLM methods for using APIs struggle with the complex API coupling commonly encountered in academic queries. To address this, we introduce SoAy, a solution-based LLM methodology for academic information seeking. SoAy enables LLMs to generate code for invoking APIs, guided by a pre-constructed API calling sequence referred to as a solution. This solution simplifies the model's understanding of complex API relationships, while the generated code enhances reasoning efficiency. LLMs are aligned with this solution-oriented, code-based reasoning method by automatically enumerating valid API coupling sequences and transforming them into queries and executable *** evaluate SoAy, we introduce SoAyBench, an evaluation benchmark accompanied by SoAyEval, built upon a cloned environment of APIs from AMiner. Experimental results demonstrate a 34.58-75.99% performance improvement compared to state-of-the-art LLM API-based baselines. All datasets, codes, tuned models, and deployed online services are publicly accessible at https://***/RUCKBReasoning/SoAy.

For evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms (EMOAs), an external archive can be utilized for saving good solutions found throughout the evolutionary process. Recent studies showed that a solution set selected from an external archive is usually superior to the final population. That is, the incorporation of an external archive improves the performance of EMOAs. However, the computation time for maintaining an external archive is long, especially when the archive size is large. To solve this issue, a simple archiving strategy is to save all solutions generated in the last several generations. In this paper, we examine this archiving strategy for three representative EMOAs on artificial test problems (Minus-DTLZ and WFG) and real-world problems (RE). Our results show that archiving the last several generations clearly improves the performance of EMOAs without severely increasing the computation time. © 2024 IEEE.

Privacy-Preserving Deep Learning (PPDL) using Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) addresses potential data privacy exposure risks associated with deploying deep learning models in untrusted cloud environments. FHE-based PPDL enables users to encrypt their data locally, allowing cloud service providers to perform computations directly on the encrypted data without ever accessing it. However, FHE faces challenges in efficiently handling nonlinear computations, which are essential to deep learning frameworks, particularly in implementing activation functions and max pooling layers. To address this challenge, we improve the homomorphic max pooling approximation scheme HMaxPool, and propose an efficient homomorphic max pooling algorithm, denoted as HMaxPool+. Specifically, we first redefine the approximation of the maximum function, and then design sub-algorithm to address the potential output expansion issue. The experimental results validate that both the homomorphic max pooling algorithm itself and the corresponding homomorphic SqueezeNet neural network demonstrate enhancements in computational efficiency and accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The role of sea surface temperature(SST)variability in the pre-monsoonal(April to July)intraseasonal oscillation(ISO)over the South china Sea(SCS)is investigated using the Community Earth System Model Version 2(CESM2).An Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project(AMIP)simulation forced by daily sea surface temperatures(SSTs)derived from a parallel coupled general circulation model(CGCM)run was compared with observations and the mother coupled *** the coupled model,the SST warming leads the peak convection about 1/4 period as in *** paralell uncoupled model fails to simulate this phase relationship,implying the importance of air-sea coupling in reproducing realistic *** to the near-quadrature phase relationship between SST and precipitation ISOs during the ISO events,it is difficult to distinguish the active/passive role of SST from observations *** correlation in intraseasonal precipitation between the daily SST-forced AMIP and mother CGCM runs indicates that SST plays a role in driving the atmospheric ISO.

Spatial and temporal variation of water clarity in typical reservoirs in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region observed by GF 1-WFV satellite data

Rapidly monitoring regional water quality and the changing trend is of great practical and scientific significance,especially for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)region of china where water resources are relatively scarce and inland water bodies are generally *** remote sensing data of the GF 1 satellite launched in 2013 have characteristics of high spatial and temporal resolution,which can be used for the dynamic monitoring of the water environment in small lakes and ***,the water quality remote sensing monitoring model based on the GF 1 satellite data for lakes and reservoirs in BTH is still lacking because of the considerable differences in the optical characteristics of the lakes and *** this paper,the typical reservoirs in BTH-Guanting Reservoir,Yuqiao Reservoir,Panjiakou Reservoir,and Daheiting Reservoir are taken as the study *** the atmospheric correction of GF 1-WFV,the relative radiation normalized atmospheric correction was adopted after comparing it with other methods,such as 6 S and *** the water clarity retrieval,a water color hue angle based model was proposed and outperformed other available published models,with the R 2 of 0.74 and MRE of 31.7%.The clarity products of the four typical reservoirs in the BTH region in 2013-2019 were produced using the GF 1-WFV *** on the products,temporal and spatial changes in clarity were analyzed,and the main influencing factors for each water body were *** was found that the clarity of Guanting,Daheiting,and Panjiakou reservoirs showed an upward trend during this period,while that of Yuqiao Reservoir showed a downward *** the influencing factors,the water level of the water bodies can be an important factor related to the water clarity changes in this region.
