The infinite dimensionality, varying, uncertainties or even unknown boundary conditions render the derivation and - in particular - the identification of accurate dynamics models for elastic link robots tedious and error prone. This contribution circumvents these challenges by the prior application of a model-free inner loop oscillation damping controller before modelling the robot's dynamics. Then, the damped dynamics of a multi elastic link robot arm under gravity can be modelled with high accuracy. An analytical and a data-driven model for the damped dynamics are proposed and quantitatively compared. Both models can explain motor currents as well as link strain measurements in real-time. The paper includes an experimental model validation with different payloads in the entire workspace of the robot.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.

An intelligent cane robot was designed for aiding the elderly and handicapped people walking. The robot consists of a stick, a group of sensors and an omni-directional basis driven by three Swedish wheels. Multiple sensors were used to recognize the user's “walking intention”, which is quantitatively described by a new concept called intentional direction (ITD). Based on the guidance of filtered ITD, a novel intention-based admittance motion control (IBAC) scheme was proposed for the cane robot. To detect the fall of user, a detection method based on Dubois possibility theory was proposed using the combined sensor information from force sensors, a laser ranger finder (LRF) and an on-shoe load sensor. The human fall model was represented in a two-dimensional space, where the relative position between the center of pressure (COP) and the center of support triangle was utilized as a significant feature. The effectiveness of proposed fall detection method was also confirmed by experiments.

This paper presents novel methods of the synthesis of adaptive control systems for the autonomous aircrafts, operating in non-formalized environment. A nonlinear multi-connected dynamic model is considered. The paper presents design method of search less adaptive control systems, design method of indirect adaptive control systems, and design method of robust relay control systems. Modeling results approve proposed methods.

The “timed elastic band” approach optimizes robot trajectories by subsequent modification of an initial trajectory generated by a global planner. The objectives considered in the trajectory optimization include but are not limited to the overall path length, trajectory execution time, separation from obstacles, passing through intermediate way points and compliance with the robots dynamic, kinematic and geometric constraints. “Timed elastic bands” explicitly consider spatial-temporal aspects of the motion in terms of dynamic constraints such as limited robot velocities and accelerations. The trajectory planning operates in real time such that “timed elastic bands” cope with dynamic obstacles and motion constraints. The “timed elastic band problem” is formulated as a scalarized multi-objective optimization problem. Most objectives are local and relate to only a small subset of parameters as they only depend on a few consecutive robot states. This local structure results in a sparse system matrix, which allows the utilization of fast and efficient optimization techniques such as the open-source framework “g2o” for solving “timed elastic band” problems. The “g2o” sparse system solvers have been successfully applied to VSLAM problems. This contribution describes the application and adaptation of the g2o-framework in the context of trajectory modification with the “timed elastic band”. Results from simulations and experiments with a real robot demonstrate that the implementation is robust and computationally efficient.
