Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin in Contact with Bone Substitutes, Porous Zirconia, or Laser-Textured Implant Surfaces: A Detailed Morphological Analysis

The aim of the present study was to perform a detailed morphological analysis of an injectable platelet rich fibrin after combination with two different particulate hydroxyapatite-based granules, a porous zirconia block, and laser-textured zirconia or titanium surfaces. Blood samples were harvested from three participants to prepare the flowable injectable PRF in contact or not with particulate hydroxyapatite (Hap), bone mineral granules (DBBM), porous zirconia blocks, laser-textured titanium or zirconia surfaces. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate the fibrin network density, fibrin fibers’ diameter, blood cells, and the interaction of PRF with the biomaterials. Histomorphometry of the flowable PRF was also performed using the hematoxylin–eosin staining protocol. Specimens were independently evaluated by two blinded and well-trained researchers in histomorphometry and microscopy. Particulate Hap and DBBM shown different morphological aspects by SEM analyses since DBBM revealed macro- and micro-scale pores while Hap revealed a dense structure. Hydroxyapatite and DBBM granules were entirely embedded by the fibrin-network in the presence of leukocytes and blood platelets. The zirconia porous structured was filled with PRF and its components. Also, the laser-structured zirconia or implant surfaces were entirely coated with the PRF fibrin network embedding leukocytes and blood platelets. Laser-textured titanium surfaces revealed macro- and micro-scale irregularities that increase the surface area and retention of the injectable PRF. Histomorphometric analyses revealed complementary details on the distribution of lymphocytes, red blood cells, and fibrin associated with platelet aggregation. Modern aircraft compression ignition engines that seek to achieve fuel-flexible operation require ignition-assisting devices to perform reliably. Many military propulsion systems, and unmanned aircraft in particular, can use hot surface energy addition to improve engine performance. An analysis of the thermomechanical stress behavior of hot surface ignition devices is therefore critical to ensure that they can satisfy new operational requirements. In this paper, a phenomenological heat-flux model is proposed to simulate heat generation inside a heating element. Two finite element analysis models are established using the proposed heat-flux model in order to characterize the transient thermomechanical behavior of an ignition assistant: a two-dimensional (2-D) axisymmetric model with an equivalent cylindrical heating element and a three-dimensional (3-D) solid model with realistic heating element geometry. The transient behavior of the ignition assistant is investigated at standard conditions by characterizing the temperature and thermal stress inside the device for various input voltages. The effect of the nonaxisymmetric heating element geometry on the temperature and thermal stress distribution is assessed. Furthermore, the 3-D ignition assistant model is used to analyze the thermomechanical behavior of an ignition device subjected to a combustion event inside a rapid compression machine. Multiple circumferential orientations of the heating element plane relative to the spray axis are investigated. Results demonstrate that the observed maximum principal stress depends significantly on heating element orientation.

Critical Disciplinary Thinking and Curricular Design in Games

Rouse's research focuses on investigating new forms of storytelling with new technologies such as immersive and responsive systems via queer critical feminist perspectives and methods. James Malazita is a co-guest editor for this special issue Critical Game Design. He is an assistant professor of Science & Technology Studies and the associate director of the Games & Simulation Arts & Sciences Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY. His work examines game engines and design through a feminist technoscience studies lens.

This article details a large-scale curricular design project in creating and implementing an MS/PhD in "Critical Game Design. " Curricular design and critical scholarship in the analysis and design of games are co-constitutive. Institutional structures build individual and institutional capacity, they legitimize scholarship, define boundaries of expertise, and contribute to imaginations of disciplinary purview. We reflect on what is at stake beyond the discipline itself in wider digital culture, particularly the spread of disinformation, related growth of anti-academic sentiment, and testing of the foundations of democracy. We examine our own complicity and articulate the space of the games classroom as a site of potential transformation.

Environmental and occupational issues regarding Cr6+ formation urge the replacement of chrome-containing refractories by greener alternatives. For the latest decades, magnesium-containing refractories have been investigated for this purpose, however, few studies evaluated the likelihood of using other chemical elements as inducers of spinel-like phase formation in refractory castables. In this work, the addition of zincite (ZnO) in alumina-based vibrated castables bonded with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) or hydratable alumina (HA) was evaluated and compared with its MgO counterpart. The formation of the Zn-based spinel (ZnAl2O4, gahnite) took place at a lower temperature (1100 ºC) than MgAl2O4 (1300 ºC), resulting in the anticipated strengthening of these compositions. Despite the challenges regarding using ZnO - as its volatilization under reduced atmosphere and fast reaction kinetics -, lower linear dimensional changes, comparable cold modulus of rupture and enhanced thermal shock damage resistance was detected. © 2022 Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories, UNITECR 2022 - Proceedings. His work examines game engines and design through a feminist technoscience studies lens. is a co-guest editor for this special issue Critical Game Design and an associate professor in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. His research examines the creative collaborative work of (video)game design and development. This research examines the cultural and collaborative dynamics that occur in both professional “AAA” organizations and formal and informal “independent” game development communities. His book Developer's Dilemma was published by MIT Press (2014).

This special issue addresses the epistemological, institutional, and political challenges of integrating critical games scholarship with game development practices and pedagogy. The featured essays help form a foundation for Critical Game Design and draw from intellectual traditions and debates not only from both game studies and game design, but from the classical design disciplines as well. We aim to build more connective tissue and collaboration between game design and the broader design disciplines, allowing space for research, scholarship, and creative work that drives the underlying epistemological core of the many spaces in which all designers find themselves educated and employed.

Environmental pressures shape animal colouration, facilitating adaptation to local conditions. However, the extent to which climatic gradients drive colour variation in a species across its distributional range remains unclear. Here, we tested whether the dorsal colouration of Lusitanian wall lizards ( Podarcis lusitanicus ) varies spatially in response to environmental gradients across its distribution in the north-western Iberian Peninsula. We estimated dorsal colour brightness (i.e., lightness) from multispectral photographs of 463 animals, originating from 21 locations distributed across the species range. We studied direct and indirect (mediated by body mass) relationships between environmental variables and the lightness of lizards, by piecewise structural equation modelling. We simultaneously tested predictions from Gloger's (darker colouration in warm and humid environments), thermal melanism (darker colouration in colder environments), photoprotection (darker colouration in areas with higher intensity of solar radiation) and Bergmann's (larger body size in colder environments) hypotheses. We found that the lightness of lizards best follows predictions of Gloger's hypothesis for humidity, but not supporting the photoprotection hypothesis, independent of the populations' shared ancestry and geographic location. We found no support for direct thermal melanism, as temperature was not directly associated with lightness. Instead, the indirect effect of temperature on lightness through body size was detected. Consistent with Bergmann's hypothesis, lizards in colder regions tended to be larger and darker. Our study indicates that the evolution of lizard dorsal colouration is driven by variable climatic factors. Experimental tests are necessary to assess the mechanisms driving climatic effects on colouration across diverse environments, advancing beyond the simplistic correlations suggested by ecogeographic hypotheses.

Ethnography is a core methodology in anthropology and other disciplines. Yet, there is currently no scholarly consensus on how to teach ethnographic methods-or even what methods belong in the ethnographic toolkit. We report on a systematic analysis of syllabi to gauge how ethnographic methods are taught in the United States. We analyze 107 methods syllabi from a nationally elicited sample of university faculty who teach ethnography. Systematic coding shows that ethics, research design, participant observation, interviewing, and analysis are central to ethnographic instruction. But many key components of ethical, quality ethnographic practice (like preparing an IRB application, reflexivity, positionality, taking field notes, accurate transcription, theme identification, and coding) are only taught rarely. We suggest that, without inclusion of such elements in its basic training, the fields that prioritize this methodology are at risk of inadvertently perpetuating uneven, erratic, and extractive fieldwork practices.

Establishing historical species distributions can assist conservation translocations for threatened species, and yet, ecological changes necessitate developing restoration targets that are not analogous to historical baselines. Despite its recent conservation translocation to Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada Mountains, USA, the historical distribution of the federally threatened California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii) in the valley remains unclear. Using archival records, interviews, and museum specimens, we examined the historical evidence for California Red-legged Frogs and sympatric amphibian species in the Yosemite region. We found a paucity of reliable amphibian records for Yosemite Valley since the 19th century, one of the most-visited sites in the US National Park System, and conclude that this is the result of historically low collecting and survey effort prior to the introduction of invasive American Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus; also Rana catesbeiana after Yuan and others 2016) in concert with a bird and mammal study bias from largely diurnal collecting that occurred when California Red-legged Frogs were extant regionally. We found previously undocumented records for individuals of the genus Rana for Yosemite Valley, consistent with a dominant historical hydrology more compatible for Foothill Yellow-legged Frogs (Rana boylii), though none could be definitively identified as California Red-legged Frogs. We conclude that extensive anthropogenic impacts, including acute ecosystem alteration and American Bullfrog introduction, contributed to the failure to detect California Red-legged Frogs in many places regionally once amphibians became a research priority in the latter 20th century. Pre-Ictal Seizure Prediction Using Personalized Deep Learning

Introduction Approximately 23 million or 30% of epilepsy patients worldwide suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). The unpredictability of seizure occurrences, which causes safety issues (swimming, driving, etc.) as well as social concerns (gatherings, etc.), restrict the lifestyles of DRE patients. Surgical solutions such as deep brain stimulation that minimize seizure occurrences are very expensive, unreliable, and invasive. Current electroencephalogram (EEG)-based solutions that predict seizures are impractical for 24-hour use. Although few researchers have attempted to use physiological data to predict seizures during the pre-ictal period in order to remove the barriers faced by DRE patients, they have not had acceptable model performances for practical patient use. The goal of this research was to employ improved technologies and methods to epilepsy patients’ physiological data and predict seizures up to two hours before onset, enabling non-invasive, affordable seizure prediction for DRE patients. Methods This research used a 1D Convolutional Neural Network-Based Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-BiLSTM) network that was trained on a diverse set of epilepsy patients’ physiological data to predict seizures. Transfer learning was further utilized to personalize and optimize predictions for specific patients. Clinical data was retrospectively obtained for nine epilepsy patients collected via wearable devices over periods of about three to five days from a prospectively maintained database. The physiological data collected included 54 seizure occurrences, and it included the variables heart rate, blood volume pulse, accelerometry, body temperature, and electrodermal activity. Results A general deep-learning model trained on epileptic patient physiological data with randomly sampled test data achieved an accuracy of 91.94%. Networks in crisis: Measuring ethnic stratification and organizational reach post-disaster

This study investigates the extent of ethnic stratification within social networks in a disaster-affected community. Prior research highlights disparities in resilience capacities across racial and ethnic groups, often attributed to social isolation and limited access to resources. Utilizing a novel survey of 240 residents in Farmburg, California (pseudonym), we analyzed individual and organizational network data to examine three key aspects of connectivity: 1) resident-to-resident ties, 2) resident-to-organization ties, and 3) organizational reach across ethnic groups. Findings reveal significant ethnic homophily in resident networks, with a predominance of intra-ethnic ties. Furthermore, the study identifies variations in the extent to which different types of organizations bridge these ethnic divides. Preliminary analysis suggests that healthcare and emergency response organizations may exhibit lower levels of inter-ethnic connectivity compared to other types of organizations. By quantifying these social divides and their impact on organizational reach, this study provides crucial insights for developing more equitable and inclusive disaster resilience strategies that effectively address the needs of all community members. © 2025
