Aaron Williams is the Senior Data Research Scientist in the Office of Diversity and Engagement at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science. Before joining UVA Williams worked as a principal data analyst at a Fortune 100 financial technology company building models and reporting dashboards from enterprise scale data warehouses. Shanta Whitaker is a health policy consultant at Logistics Management Institute (LMI) a management consulting firm based in Tysons VA. Before switching to health policy Dr. Whitaker was the Associate Director of the Health Professions Advising Program at Yale University. Stephanie Yingling is a government consultant at Logistics Management Institute (LMI) a management consulting firm based in Tysons VA. An Air Force veteran she is also a PhD candidate pursuing her research in the field of Education focusing areas of Organizational Leadership and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Inclusion. Karen Kurotsuchi Inkelas is an Associate Professor in the Higher Education Program Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. She also serves as Research Director for the Crafting Success for Underrepresented Scientists and Engineers Initiative as well as a Research Director of Undergraduate Initiatives for the Contemplative Sciences Center. John Gates is the Associate Dean and Chief Diversity Officer in the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is also the Principal and Chief Strategist for Criticality Management Consulting.

To meet projected labor demands in science and engineering, the workforce of the future must be educated today in increasing numbers. Indeed, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) underpin the government's ability to defend the nation and to assure the vitality of the economy. STEM jobs are the fastest growing occupational category and, by 2020, 65% of all jobs in the U.S. will require a post-secondary degree with STEM literacy skills (Carnevale, Smith, & Strohl, 2013). However, according to the U.S. Department of Education, less than 25 percent of college students pursuing bachelor's degrees will be specializing in STEM fields (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). In addition, the current STEM workforce is predominantly male and White or Asian, even as women and racial and ethnic minority groups are projected to comprise greater percentages of the U.S. population in the coming decades. To meet the growing global demand for a STEM workforce, every segment of the U.S. population will need to be engaged in a successful STEM education. A first critical step will be for academia, government, and nongovernmental agencies to understand the challenges diverse students face in their quest to join the STEM workforce. The goal of the project described in this article is to close the achievement gap of underrepresented minority and underserved students (URMS) and to contribute to addressing the STEM crisis facing the nation. In addition to the longitudinal, five phase research project outlined in this article, UVA Engineering's Office of Diversity and Education (ODE) will work to assemble a comprehensive clearinghouse of survey and records data on factors related to STEM education from sources such as admissions, student affairs, student health, academic records and campus-wide surveys in institutional research offices, and UVA's own research and work.

From 2016 to 2017 he took part in a Post-doctoral research program on State Monopolies in China — One Belt One Road studies. In 2014 and 2017 he was awarded the Institute of European Studies in Macau (IEEM) Academic Research Grant which is a major component of the Asia–Europe Comparative Studies Research Project. From 2014 to 2018 he was the Program Coordinator at the Institute of Social and Legal Studies Faculty of Humanities University of Saint Joseph in Macau China. He is currently an Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of the Institute for Research on Portuguese-Speaking Countries at the City University of Macau China. His most recent books published in 2018 and 2019 are respectively titled Steps of Greatness: The Geopolitics of OBOR and The Challenges Development and Promise of Timor-Leste. Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Macao) Avenida Comercial de Macau FIT Building 13th Floor Macau Special Administrative Region P. R. China Danilo Lemos Henriques is currently the Representative of Timor-Leste at the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries (Macao). He is a Ph.D. candidate as well as a Research Fellow at the City University of Macao. He has held a number of diplomatic posts including in Beijing has lived in China for the past seven years and holds an MBA from the University of Iowa.

This paper will examine the interplay and relationship between bilateral diplomatic relations and economic relations through the lens of political factors, examining the concrete case of the Republic of Portugal and the People’s Republic of China. It will consider their common past — the nations’ historical similarities, their common aims and ideological differences, and analyze the alignment and the synergy developed in the modern era in developing common platforms of aims and will, in terms of political agenda-setting, such as through the issue of the status of the territory of Macao and the relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs). It further analyzes the past few decades through the signing of diplomatic protocols, engaged bilateral and multilateral economic diplomacies, and growing commerce and trade links to identify the key trends and extrapolate relevant correlations. We examine the progresses in the relationship between the advancement of Sino-Portuguese diplomatic relations and the development of economic interplay post the 1979 period, following the formal establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations. We argue in favor of an existing positive correlation between acts of economic diplomacy and the development of bilateral economic relations. This paper presents a methodological, theoretical-inductive, and constructivist perspective, combining qualitative, quantitative, and non-participated observation.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) established the national Caregiver Support Line (CSL) in February 2011. The CSL is operated by licensed master’s degree social workers who provide caregivers of veterans with information about caregiver benefits and services, counseling, and referrals to a caregiver support coordinator at the nearest VA medical center. The authors compared differences in veteran health care utilization patterns in the six months before and after a caregiver call to the CSL, hypothesizing that veterans with caregivers using the CSL had improved access to health care services and improved access increased utilization of health care. A pre- and posttest design was used. CSL calls that resulted in referrals to VA health care services or to local VA caregiver support coordinators were included in the sample. Data were extracted from the CSL database and matched to veteran care utilization data using veteran medical record data. Veteran inpatient stays for general medicine, hospice, respite, and long-term care significantly increased after the CSL call, but other inpatient stays (surgery, neurology) did not. Outpatient services for home health, respite, and mental health all significantly increased. Caregivers’ use of the national CSL may help facilitate access for veterans to needed care services.

OBJECTIVE:Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) have focused largely on populations of European ancestry. We aimed to identify common germline variants associated with EOC risk in Asian women. METHODS:Genotyping was performed as part of the OncoArray project. Samples with >60% Asian ancestry were included in the analysis. Genotyping was performed on 533,631 SNPs in 3238 Asian subjects diagnosed with invasive or borderline EOC and 4083 unaffected controls. After imputation, genotypes were available for 11,595,112 SNPs to identify associations. RESULTS:At chromosome 6p25.2, SNP rs7748275 was associated with risk of serous EOC (odds ratio [OR] = 1.34, P = 8.7 × 10) and high-grade serous EOC (HGSOC) (OR = 1.34, P = 4.3 × 10). SNP rs6902488 at 6p25.2 (r = 0.97 with rs7748275) lies in an active enhancer and is predicted to impact binding of STAT3, P300 and ELF1. We identified additional risk loci with low Bayesian false discovery probability (BFDP) scores, indicating they are likely to be true risk associations (BFDP <10%). At chromosome 20q11.22, rs74272064 was associated with HGSOC risk (OR = 1.27, P = 9.0 × 10). Overall EOC risk was associated with rs10260419 at chromosome 7p21.3 (OR = 1.33, P = 1.2 × 10) and rs74917072 at chromosome 2q37.3 (OR = 1.25, P = 4.7 × 10). At 2q37.3, expression quantitative trait locus analysis in 404 HGSOC tissues identified ESPNL as a putative candidate susceptibility gene (P = 1.2 × 10). CONCLUSION:While some risk loci were shared between East Asian and European populations, others were population-specific, indicating that the landscape of EOC risk in Asian women has both shared and unique features compared to women of European ancestry.

There has been a growing interest in Health Informatics applications, research, and education within the Middle East and North African Region over the past twenty years. People of this region share similar cultural and religious values, primarily speak the Arabic language, and have similar health care related issues, which are in dire need of being addressed. Health Informatics efforts, organizations, and initiatives within the region have been largely under-represented within, but not ignored by, the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). Attempts to create bonds and collaboration between the different organizations of the region have remained scattered, and often, resulted in failure despite the fact that the need for a united health informatics collaborative within the region has never been more crucial than today. During the 2017 MEDINFO, held in Hangzhou, China, a new organization, the Middle East and North African Health Informatics Association (MENAHIA) was conceived as a regional non-governmental organization to promote and facilitate health informatics uptake within the region endorsing health informatics research and educational initiatives of the 22 countries represented within the region. This paper provides an overview of the collaboration and efforts to date in forming MENAHIA and displays the variety of initiatives that are already occurring within the MENAHIA region, which MENAHIA will help, endorse, support, share, and improve within the international forum of health informatics.
