From Dissemination to Propagation: A New Paradigm for Education Developers

His research interests include sustained adoption of improvements in learning and teaching systematic reviews in engineering education evaluation of faculty campus climates and assessment of complex learning outcomes. Charles Henderson is a Professor at Western Michigan University with a joint appointment between the Department of Physics and the Mallinson Institute for Science Education. His research focuses on promoting productive changes in higher education at the individual department institution and national levels. Renée S. Cole is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Iowa. She teaches introductory and advanced courses in chemistry and runs a research program focused on the design and assessment of instructional materials and teaching strategies and faculty professional development. Debra Friedrichsen founded and operates a small consulting company. She received her Ph.D. from Oregon State University in Chemical Engineering with a dissertation focused on engineering education. Debra also has a MBA a MS and a patent for sensor development. Raina Khatri is a doctoral student in the Mallinson Institute for Science Education at Western Michigan University. Her research focus is understanding how education developers in STEM can promote sustained adoption of their innovations. Courtney Stanford is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her current research focuses on the identification development and assessment of process skills (also known as professional skills) in active learning undergraduate STEM classrooms.

Scholarly studies and national reports document failure of current efforts to achieve broad, sustained adoption of research-based instructional practices, despite compelling bodies of evidence supporting efficacy of many of these practices. The authors of this paper argue that many change agents who are working to promote systemic adoption of these teaching practices use approaches that are characterized by what the authors call the "dissemination paradigm." A dissemination paradigm characterizes patterns of these current, failing efforts. Change agents, working within the dissemination paradigm, try to convince adopters that their innovations can help their students. Efforts within the dissemination paradigm have not led, and are unlikely to lead, to systemic adoption. The authors offer the "propagation paradigm" as an alternative with the potential to produce improved results. Change agents, working within the propagation paradigm, engage with adopters early and often to understand their instructional systems and interactively develop a strong product adaptable to specific contexts.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

Presentation H. Iskandar: Department of Medicine, Division of Digestive Diseases, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, Presentation date: October 27, 2016. Our patient is a 20-year-old woman with Crohn's disease that involves most gastrointestinal (GI) tract who came to see us with the chief complaints of dysphagia and weight loss. To provide background on her bowel disease, in July 2011, she presented to an outside institution with weight loss, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea and was diagnosed with colonic Crohn's disease after colonoscopy. She was initially treated with mesalamine and corticosteroids, then methotrexate that was changed to 6-mercaptopurine (MP), without much improvement. In September 2011, she was started on infliximab. According to her family, the infliximab kept her disease under control until she developed infliximab antibodies in 2014 and lost response. That same year, she was switched to adalimumab that was initially given every 2 weeks but was accelerated to weekly dosing. Her symptoms were under moderate control with adalimumab, although she felt that the adalimumab was not as effective as infliximab, given that she experienced breakthrough symptoms such as diarrhea. Around this same time, she was having issues with hidradenitis on her buttocks and both axilla. In August 2015, she reported having fatigue, odynophagia, oral ulcers, and diarrhea at an office visit. At this time, it was noted that she had lost 60 pounds from a starting weight of 180 pounds over the previous 6 months. She underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in December 2015 at her home hospital. A limited report received from her medical records indicates that she had erosive esophagitis on EGD. She underwent esophageal manometry to evaluate for reflux that demonstrated esophageal hypomotility with a few reflux events. She was started on dexlansoprazole and sucralfate for her esophagitis but her condition continued to deteriorate. In January 2016,

Recently unintended pregnancies have been described as "a new kind of mid-life crisis." Given the high prevalence of unwanted or mistimed pregnancy in the US, we examined the sexual and reproductive health patterns of sexually active midlife women. An examination of the prevalence of unintended pregnancy among midlife women revealed a gap in data indicating unmet sexual and reproductive health needs of midlife women. The application of a framework for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for unintended pregnancy may assist with guiding care for women and identifying implications for reproductive health policy and potential political interference as they relate to sexual and reproductive health in midlife women.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 13th Annual SIG/USE research Symposium focused on ways mobile technologies have influenced information needs, seeking and use. In her keynote address, Caroline Haythornthwaite framed movement as changing contributorship, interactions and participation in multiple knowledge communities. A series of Ignite talks on the common theme of mobility followed, with topics ranging from mobile phones as the preferred Internet access device, credibility of mobile applications and online resources and public libraries' use of social media and mobile applications to mobile apps promoting health information literacy and supporting teleworking. Small groups brainstormed on opportunities, challenges and research ideas inspired by the theme. Annual SIG/USE awards recognized scholars for innovative work on topics including refugees' information seeking, factors influencing scholars' data sharing and drawings as visual representations of information. The symposium closed with encouragement to consider how information on the move influences perspectives and research into information behavior.
