As I have been listening to the previous speakers, I have been thinking through my slides. We easily could talk about the Major research Instrumentation (MRI) program for an hour. So during my time, I will run through the rules of road and things you can do to increase your chances of success and the caveats that go with that. My big take-home message is that this is not something where you can just read the MRI solicitation beforehand and write a good proposal. You really have to think about this and do your homework. Get to know program officers and understand the program. I will try to show you enough of the nuances of the program so that it will encourage you to do that. I'll show you some of the pitfalls, and you'll be able to see you need more information. We're in Arlington, VA, and the old-fashioned way to do this was to go visit us in the NSF building; however we have technology to do that now. We have websites, webcasts (one will be held in December), phone calls, etc. There are a lot of ways to electronically reach out and get information.

Sense of place can be defined as a comprehensive integration of the geology, ecology, and cultural history of an area, and as such it constitutes an objective topic for standards-based, academic instruction (Brown and de Lacerda 1986). Developing students\' sense of place is a good and worthwhile goal of education generally, and the middle school years are an excellent time to teach sense of place. Middle school students are ready for increasingly comprehensive instruction, and science objectives for this age group typically include knowledge of geology, ecology, and cultural history.

The consequences of initial variability in reproductive effort on later pollination and fruit development have frequently been investigated with flower removal experiments. Often, plants produce many fewer fruits than flowers, so flower removal might not be expected to alter subsequent growth or development patterns all that much. Yet, many studies have demonstrated such changes even for species with low average fruit set, which begs for an explanation. Many (at least seven, by our count) such explanations have been reported in the literature, but experimental support for most is limited. In summer 2014, we conducted a field experiment on a lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) farm in Maine. In this experiment, we coupled flower removal with three other treatments, each designed to assess the validity of one of three often-cited hypotheses invoked to explain why growth and development changes occur following flower removal: 1) “Short-term nutrient shortages;” 2) “spatiotemporal limitations;” and 3) “the compound interest effect.” The three respective treatments—foliar nitrogen fertilization, positionally biased flower removal, and defoliation—were designed to either intensify or weaken the apparent effects of flower removal if the corresponding hypothesis had merit. As in a 2013 preliminary experiment, flower removal elicited several statistically significant growth and development changes in blueberry, including increases in final leaf area, ripe fruit weight, fruit ripening rate, and relative fruit production. The additional treatments also elicited several significant plant responses, though not always with concomitant flower removal effects as well. For example, fertilization generally increased fruit cluster mass by harvest, but flower removal itself had no such effect on cluster mass. Most observed interactive effects between flower removal and the additional treatments either ran counter to expectations, were limited in scope, or couldn't be unambiguou

MOOCs – international information and education phenomenon?

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Since the 1990s massive open online courses (MOOCs) have offered web-based learning on a large scale and with open access. The leading MOOC providers in 2014 – Udemy, Coursera and edX – vary in detail but share the goal of facilitating learning for unlimited audiences at no cost or minimal charge, overcoming socioeconomic hurdles and opening education to all. The potential is strong, and data shows promising registration figures from India and economically developing countries. Yet MOOCs fall short of their goal of widespread and readily accessed education, impeded by technology challenges, lack of basic education and predominance of English as the language of instruction. Maintaining a high standard of educational quality is challenging, and attrition rates are very high. Those in library and information science can facilitate learning through MOOCs and also benefit by using the platform to build awareness of the professional field.

作者： John Maeda Steven Heller Tim Hoover Has been a design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers since January 2014 helping entrepreneurs and portfolio companies to build design into their company cultures. He served as the president of Rhode Island School of Design for six years through 2013 and also served as an associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab. Maeda has been a practicing designer since 1990 and his work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation. He serves on the boards of several corporations including Sonos and Wieden + Kennedy and is chair of eBay's Design Advisory Board. His four published books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda is the recipient of a variety of international awards for his creative work including induction into the Art Director's Club Hall of Fame. In 2001 he received the White House National Design Award in 2002 he received the Mainichi Design Prize in Japan and in 2005 he was awarded the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany. Maeda earned a BS and an MS from MIT in computer science and electrical engineering. He received a PhD in design science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan as well as an MBA from Arizona State University. Co‐chair and co‐founder of the MFA Designer as Author and Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was the art director of The New York Times Book Review and now writes the VISUALS column for the NYTBR. He also writes “The Daily Heller” at *** a weekly online design column for Atlantic magazine. He is author co‐author and editor of more than 165 books on the history and practice of graphic design illustration and satiric art. His forthcoming books include 100 Classic Graphic Design Magazines (Laurence King Publishers) and Raw Data: The Process Behind Information Graphics (Thames + Hudson). In the last few decades, remote sensing techniques has become efficient and economical approaches for forest area analysis, including aerial photogrammetry, satellite imagery, SAR(synthetic aperture radar) and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). From the above several methods, only LIDAR can provide information of the tree structures which is very useful for forest analysis. In antithesis to conventional airborne multi-echo LIDAR, full-waveform LIDAR systems are able to record the whole emitted and backscattered signal of each laser pulse. These full waveform LIDAR signals can be considered as Gaussian mixture and each Gaussian can be thought as substructure of the tree. The Gaussian mixture problem can be solved by Gaussian decomposition, however, using Gaussian decomposition must known a prior I first,so it can get the number of Gaussian,but it ’s usually unavailable. In this study, we propound a method to estimate the number of Gaussian by Empirical Mode Decomposition and both synthetic and real data is adopted for performance analysis.
