Under the framework of ecological civilisation,the formulation of territorial spatial planning(TSP) and improvement of spatial governance systems are of great practical *** the founding of the People’s Republic of China,land-use planning(LUP) has experienced profound changes,and tremendous research efforts have been made in that ***,systematic studies on LUP history are *** bridge the existing gap,this study traced back to the emergence of LUP,described its practice stages,and analysed the evolution of its classification system and ***,the three rounds of general LUP practice and the current TSP over the past 40 years of the reform and opening-up have been *** evolution of LUP was found to be closely related to economic development and could be broadly divided into four *** development of land-use classification in China has been slow and can be divided into five stages according to the evolution of the land classification system and important historical *** development of LUP methods can be divided into two stages,before and after *** the economic reform,China has successively conducted three rounds of general LUP under different institutional and policy *** development should aim to innovate the theories and methods of TSP with Chinese characteristics and promote the study of village planning and the construction of TSP systems to achieve rural revitalisation and ecological civilisation.

Impacts of traffic accessibility on ecosystem services:An integrated spatial approach

The continuous degradation of ecosystem services is an important challenge faced by the *** in transportation infrastructure have had substantial impacts on economic development and ecosystem *** the influence of traffic accessibility on ecosystem services can delay or stop their deterioration;however,studies on its impact are *** study addresses this gap by analysing the impact of traffic accessibility on ecosystem services using an integrated spatial regression approach based on an evaluation of the ecosystem services value(ESV)and traffic accessibility in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River Urban Agglomeration(MRYRUA)in *** results indicated that the ESV in the MRYRUA continuously decreased during the study period,and the average ESV in plain areas,areas surrounding the core cities,and areas along the main traffic routes was significantly lower than that in areas along the Yangtze River and the surrounding mountainous *** accessibility continued to increase during the study period,and the high-value areas centred on Wuhan,Changsha,Nanchang,and Yichang were radially *** global bivariate spatial autocorrelation coefficient between the average ESV and traffic accessibility was *** average ESV and traffic accessibility exhibited significant spatial dependence and spatial *** regression also proved that there was a negative association between the average ESV and traffic accessibility,and scale effects were *** findings of this study have important policy implications for future ecological protection and transportation planning.

Effects of climate,land use and land cover changes on soil loss in the Three Gorges Reservoir area,China

Climate,land use and land cover(LULC)changes are among the primary driving forces of soil *** their effects can help in understanding the magnitude and trend of soil loss in response to human activities and ecosystem ***,the RUSLE model was applied to estimate the spatial-temporal variations of soil loss rate in the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR)area during 2001-2015,followed by a scenario design to decouple the effects of climate and LULC *** results showed that increasing rainfall generated as much as 2.90×10^(7)t soil loss in the TGR ***,such effect was offset by changes in LULC particularly afforestation,which retained about 1.10×10^(7)t soil *** human activities such as dam development and urbanization aggravated soil loss by as much as 1.40×10^(6)t *** of land use policies that favor economic development,distinct spatial variances of soil loss were observed in TGR *** loss in some counties located downstream of the TGR area(i.e.,close to the dam)was more influenced by dam development,but soil loss in the other counties was more influenced by *** climate change(i.e.,increasing rainfall)did not affect plant performance in TGR area,our findings suggested that ecological restoration was more beneficial to curb the amount of soil loss caused by urbanization and dam construction.

The distribution of specific tree species and single tree information can shift down the research scale of geography and ecology, bridging research from regional to local scales. However, efficiently and finely extracting the spatial distribution and single tree information for a tree species regionally has always been a challenge due to the constraints of data and algorithms. With sub-meter visible light satellite images (RGB bands) in 2021 to 2022, we constructed a novel method for extracting the spatial distribution and single tree information of oil palm across Malaysia, namely the Single Tree Extraction Method - Oil Palm (STEM-OP). We developed a graphic morphological algorithm based on gradient difference window detection to extract the spatial distribution of oil palms. Then, we proposed an algorithm of double ring sliding detection algorithm to identify the canopy texture features of single oil palm. Finally, an adaptive iterative erosion algorithm was employed to separate overlapping and adjacent canopies into single trees. The overall accuracy of both the spatial distribution and number of single oil palm extracted by STEM-OP exceeded 90%. Our study revealed that the total area of oil palm in Malaysia was 5.25 million hectares, with a total of 572.6 million trees and an average planting density of 109 palms per hectare. The STEM-OP addresses the computational inefficiencies of methods with training samples and limitations of satellite image bands. For the first time, our study extracts the refined spatial distribution of oil palm and obtains the planting density and single tree position on a national scale. All of these are of great value to the formulation of oil palm development policies and ecological protection measures. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The international community has made significant efforts to flatten the COVID-19 curve,including predicting transmission[1,2],executing unprecedented global lockdowns and social distancing[3,4],promoting the wearing of facemasks and social distancing measures[5],and isolating confirmed cases and contacts[6].Because of the adverse consequences of these lockdown measures[7],many cities have reopened so they can rebuild their ***,as mobility has gradually returned towards normal,imported cases from unknown sources have disrupted the recovery situation,and cities are continually at high risk of new waves of infection[8,9]since airborne transmission is the dominant transmission route[10].

Ice-jam floods are a unique yet understudied hydrological hazard, occurring in cold-region rivers when upstream thawing and downstream freezing create ice blockages. Despite their severe impacts, their atmospheric drivers and future trends remain unclear. Using a 160-year documentary record, historical reanalysis datasets, and statistical modeling, we examine the climatic and hydrological controls of ice-jam floods in the lower Yellow River, one of the world’s most flood-prone rivers. Our findings show that ice-jam floods are strongly influenced by large-scale atmospheric teleconnections, including the Arctic Oscillation, Siberian High, and Ural Blocking, which regulate regional thermal contrasts and cold-air intrusions. Over the past century, ice-jam flood frequency has declined, with hot spots shifting toward the river estuary due to weakening upstream-to-downstream temperature gradients under climate warming. Projections using bias-corrected CMIP6 multimodel ensemble indicate a continued decline in ice-jam flood occurrences by 2100. Our study bridges historical and future perspectives, emphasizing the need for adaptive flood management as climate change shifts hydrological risks worldwide.

Post-pandemic green recovery is pivotal in achieving global sustainable development goals by simultaneously revitalizing economies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and improving public welfare. However, subnational and city-level understanding of green recovery, its efficacy and its alignment with public health is poorly understood. Here we focus on post-COVID-19 low-carbon recovery—economic growth combined with reduced carbon emissions—and explore health co-benefits in Chinese cities. A novel near-real-time daily carbon emission dataset of 48 cities in China is developed, coupled with detailed health and economic municipal statistics and models. We find that, on average, six low-carbon-recovery cities, mainly megacities, saved 1.2 times as many lives per 100,000 population compared with the 42 other cities, and their annual monetary avoided premature deaths per 100,000 population was 1.5 times more than the 42 other cities. The accumulated monetary health co-benefits for low-carbon-recovery cities were US$ 4.2 billion (95% confidence interval, 2.1–6.3) during the post-COVID-19 period. We show that government spending on electric vehicles increases the likelihood of achieving low-carbon recovery in Chinese cities. Our results underscore the significant health co-benefits of low-carbon recovery, pointing to synergies between advancing local welfare and global environmental objectives.
