Improving Auction Mechanisms for Online Real-Time Bidding Advertising with a Two-stage Resale Model

Real Time Bidding (RTB), widely publicized as one of the most promising big-data-driven business models for online computational advertising, has the potential of effectively monetizing user clicks and impressions via two-stage auctions with resale. Demand side platforms (DSPs) play a key role as intermediators in this auction process. Typically, the first-stage auctions will be conducted separately in each DSP to determine one winning advertiser registered on it, and in the second-stage auction, each DSP submits a bid based on its winning advertiser's bid to the ad exchange platform (AdX). The highest-bid DSP wins the ad impression from AdX and resells it to its winning advertiser in pursuit of the intermediate fee. This two-stage resale auction is a critical component in maintaining the effectiveness and efficiency of RTB ecosystems. In this paper, we strive to identify and design potential improvements for this auction mechanism with the aim of enhancing the total revenue of both advertisers and DSPs. We also validated our proposed auction mechanisms using the computational experiment approach. The experimental results indicate that our proposed mechanisms can make both advertisers and DSPs better off. Our work represents the first step towards a new research area of optimal mechanism design for RTB auctions, and is expected to provide useful managerial insights in RTB market practice. © 2017

This paper proposes a novel software framework called KD-ACP. The framework implements the techniques of Artificial Society, computational experiments and parallel Execution. KD-ACP provides a systematic and automatic platform for scientists to study the emergency management problems in social computing. It is composed of a series of tools categorized into three parts correspond with the “A”, “C” and “P” respectively. The results from case study show that the most optimal emergency response decisions can be found through the software framework. In the end, the advantages of the KD-ACP and the futures work are summarized in the conclusion.

Heterogeneous individual-based epidemic models via matrix equations

Heterogeneity in human societies plays an important role in epidemic spreading process. Compared to differential equation models, individual-based epidemic models have the advantage of providing a more detailed depiction of realities to capture heterogeneity across a population. However, the higher granularity and resolution of individual-based models come with the cost of increased computational complexities, which result in difficulty in formulating individual-based models usingmathematics. Moreover, a great effort is needed to understand existing individual-based epidemic models that are presented by previous researches. In this paper, we realize the mathematical formulation of heterogeneous individual-based epidemic models by using matrix equations. We employ matrices and vectors to represent individual attributes and behaviors, derive analytical results from the matrix-based representation of individuals, and design algorithms to derivethe computation of individual-based epidemic models. At last, we study the effect of non-pharmaceutical interventions on epidemic outbreaks by using heterogeneous individual-based epidemic models via matrix equations, including contact tracing and workplace closing. A promising P2P application, P2P-TV, has attracted hundreds of thousands of Chinese viewers. These viewers who are located in different regions represent groups with distinct cultures. However, little existing research has provided sufficient insights into the societal impact of P2P-TV systems, from the viewpoint of geographic distribution of viewers. In this paper, we analyze geographic distribution of viewers of three most popular P2P-TV systems simultaneously, PPLive, PPStream and UUSee. With more than 20 GB worth of log data from three different P2P-TV systems, we have completed a thorough investigation of geographic distribution of viewers. We also seek to explore the potential correlation between viewer population density and economic development level and find that there is indeed a highly negative correlation between them.

In this paper, we propose a novel method based on the combination of Named Entity Recognition and Entity Rank algorithm for detecting key entities with significant influence and importance from huge sentiment data collected from Internet. Firstly, we extract entities from the target news websites and forums using a rule-based and CRF combined method. Secondly, we use the Entity Rank algorithm to calculate the hotness of entities extracted from the news and forums data. Finally, we validate the rationality of our algorithm by comparing our hot entities and current affairs. We believe this work will shed new lights on the online public sentiment supervision.

Social multimedia content had an unprecedented increasing trend in recent years, and receiving a number of research attentions. Images, an exceedingly expressive form of social multimedia, can be widely seen in news report for social emergency. Among the vast number of images for social emergency are many repurposed images, that is, variants not interpreted as what the original images express. Such repurposed images appear in many online pages and may mislead the public. This make it being an interesting and challenging task to identify whether an image is repurposed. We propose a novel framework, called SOFC, to identify the repurposed images. A SIFT-based identical parts finding algorithm is used to find and align all potential identical blocks in the repurposed images and the original images. We then compute the similarity of the potential identical blocks by implementing an object-based likelihood measuring algorithm, to determine whether these blocks are identical in the two images. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed identification method is validated by experiments on a image set of real social emergency.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies have developed in parallel in recent years, with technological breakthroughs in currency issuance, payment methods, and currency storage. However, the existing cryptocurrencies cannot replace fiat money. There is a huge gap between decentralized cryptocurrency and central bank digital currency, namely CBDC, in terms of monetary governance and circulation. In this paper, we propose the function and security requirements of CBDC, through a comprehensive analysis of the existing typical cryptocurrency and the prototype of the CBDC scheme. On this basis, we present a blockchain-based framework for CBDC with three layers, including supervisory layer, network layer and user layer, and describe the key business processes of the CBDC's entire lifecycle of issuance-circulation-withdrawal in detail. Finally, we take cross-border payment as an example to explain the transaction process of CBDC. We aim to provide theoretical guidance for CBDC design. © 2019 IEEE.

The privacy issues become a major problem that should be resolved for the existing centralized online social networks, which have prompted researchers to consider the decentralization framework for online social networks. In this paper, we propose a novel decentralized social networking architecture enhanced by blockchain technology. We use a sharding framework to increase the system scalability, a blockchain system to ensure the data integrity and consistency, a reputation-based authority control method to improve the system security. © 2019 IEEE.

Cyber Movement Organization (CMO) is a special kind of social movement organization on the Web. In this paper, we propose a model to simulate the mobilizing process of CMO, which consists of the individual unit, organization unit, and the mobilizing mechanisms. The mobilizing mechanisms has three sub-mechanisms: the participation mechanism, the choice mechanism, and the inviting mechanism. A dataset of more than two million "human flesh search" related microblogs is used to validate the model. Empirical results show that our model can capture the key features of the real-world mobilizing process. © IFAC.
