Under the current large-scale operational tunnels, tunnel structure maintenance is an important issue and requires complex decision making, especially involving rapid perception and analysis of structural defects. However, traditional manual inspection and experience driven maintenance decision methods are low efficiency, prone to subjectivity, and gradually unable to meet the engineering requirements. Thus, an intelligent decision support system (DSS) for tunnel structural defects maintenance is present in this paper to realize automatic decision making for tunnel structural defects maintenance. Firstly, a deep learning model for tunnel structural defects detection based on YOLOv8 is built to quickly identify the category and location of defect in an image via supervised learning. Then, a Knowledge Graph (KG) is constructed to store the related maintenance knowledge exist in unstructured format (i.e., standard) through ontological approaches. Besides, the structured data reflecting tunnel structural state (i.e., defect location) can also be added to KG. Finally, on account of the model recognition results, a semantic reasoning language is adopted to automatically inference the optimal maintenance decision from the KG. An evaluation of the DSS is additionally performed to validate rationality and effectiveness of the methodology, the results show that the DSS can achieve reasonable maintenance decision for tunnel structural defects. © 2024 The Author(s).

In order to develop a synchronous grouting material with good compre-hensive performance, this paper selected cement, fly ash, mineral powder and slag by orthogonal experimental design method to carry out the proportioning test research, which provided the most suitable slurry proportion for engineering construction. The effects of group proportioning on fluidity, compressive and flexural strength, impermeability and volumetric stability were investigated. The results show that the increase of mineral powder content improves the fluidity performance of the system;the slurry nodules with high cement dosage have higher mechanical properties and impermeability;the secondary hydration of fly ash plays a slower role, so it reduces the early strength of the material and increases the late strength;the slag reduces the impermeability and drying shrinkage of the nodules. The research focuses on the characteristics of synchronous grouting in a subway station construction project in Qingdao. It investigates the mechanical and engineering properties of a new type of material and applies it to the field of engineering control. To some extent, this material can replace cement and effectively prevent tunnel water leakage, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and extend the operation and maintenance cycle, showing significant potential for widespread application. © The Author(s) 2025.

Nonlinear Flow Properties of Newtonian Fluids through Rough Crossed Fractures

The nonlinear flow properties of Newtonian fluids through crossed fractures are estimated by considering the influences of length,aperture,and surface roughness of fractures.A total of 252 computational runs are performed by creating 36 computational domains,in which the Navier-Stokes equations are *** results show that the nonlinear relationship between flow rate and hydraulic gradient follows Forchheimer’s law–based *** the hydraulic gradient is small(i.e.,10^(−6)),the streamlines are parallel to the fracture walls,indicating a linear streamline *** the hydraulic gradient is large(i.e.,10^(0)),the streamlines are disturbed by a certain number of eddies,indicating a nonlinear streamline *** patterns of eddy distributions depend on the length,aperture,and surface roughness of *** the increment of hydraulic gradient from 10^(−6) to 10^(0),the ratio of flow rate to hydraulic gradient holds constants and then decreases slightly and finally decreases *** fluid flow experiences a linear flow regime,a weakly nonlinear regime,and a strongly nonlinear regime,*** critical hydraulic gradient ranges from 3.27×10^(−5) to 5.82×10^(−2) when fracture length=20–100mmandmechanical aperture=1–*** joint roughness coefficient plays a negligible role in the variations in critical hydraulic gradient compared with fracture length and/or mechanical *** critical hydraulic gradient decreases with increasing mechanical aperture,following power-law *** parameters in the functions are associated with fracture length.

Cyclic shear behavior of en-echelon joints under constant normal stiffness conditions

To reveal the mechanism of shear failure of en-echelon joints under cyclic loading,such as during earthquakes,we conducted a series of cyclic shear tests of en-echelon joints under constant normal stiffness(CNS)*** analyzed the evolution of shear stress,normal stress,stress path,dilatancy characteristics,and friction coefficient and revealed the failure mechanisms of en-echelon joints at different *** results show that the cyclic shear behavior of the en-echelon joints is closely related to the joint angle,with the shear strength at a positive angle exceeding that at a negative angle during shear *** the number of cycles increases,the shear strength decreases rapidly,and the difference between the varying angles gradually *** occurs in the early shear cycles(1 and 2),while contraction is the main feature in later cycles(310).The friction coefficient decreases with the number of cycles and exhibits a more significant sensitivity to joint angles than shear *** joint angle determines the asperities on the rupture surfaces and the block size,and thus determines the subsequent shear failure mode(block crushing and asperity degradation).At positive angles,block size is more greater and asperities on the rupture surface are smaller than at nonpositive ***,the cyclic shear behavior is controlled by block crushing at positive angles and asperity degradation at negative angles.

In deep underground engineering,rock burst and other dynamic disasters are prone to occur due to stress concentration and energy accumulation in surrounding *** control of dynamic disasters requires bolts and cables with high strength,high elongation,and high energy-absorbing ***,a constant resistance energy-absorbing(CREA)material is *** this study,the dynamic characteristics of the new material are obtained via the drop hammer tests and the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB)tests of the new material and two common bolt(CB)materials widely used in the *** test results of drop hammer test and SHPB test show that the percentage elongation of CREA material is more than 2.64 and 3.22 times those of the CB material,and the total impact energy acting on CREA material is more than 18.50 and 21.84 times,respectively,indicating that the new material has high elongation and high energy-absorbing ***,the CREA bolts and cables using the new material are developed,which are applied in roadways with high stress and strong dynamic *** field monitoring results show that CREA bolts and cables can effectively control the surrounding rock deformation and ensure engineering safety.

The discrete element method (DEM) is widely used for investigating the mechanical behaviours of complex physical system consisting of particles. In nature, the physical system such as rock and soil system, sand or flour are all composed of particles with different shapes. The particle shape can considerably influence nature characteristics in DEM simulation. Developing an effective particle shapes representation approach is a valuable task to improve the DEM modelling techniques. In this study, a super-quadrics function is introduced to represent the non-spherical particle shape. Furthermore, the corresponding contact detection and calculation algorithm named "deepest point method"is also explained to describe the complex contact relationships and calculate the contact forces between two irregular particles. At last, sandpile collapse simulations were conducted to validate the accuracy of the proposed approach. The numerical results indicate that the non-spherical particle modelling approach in this study can easily simulate most nature shape of particle system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Aiming at the characteristics of structural backfill engineering, combined with the backfill performance requirements of subway stations, and taking back-fill material fluidity, crystalline body strength, seepage resistance and volumetric stability as the main assessment indexes, a self-compacting and high seepage-resistant backfill material has been researched and prepared by taking the bulk solid waste cinder slag and fly ash as the main raw materials, blast furnace slag powder as the dope, and cement as the curing component. Compared with traditional backfill, the material has self-leveling characteristics and good backfill uniformity. The 28-day compressive strength of the material can reach 10.2-21.3 MPa, which exceeds that of C10 concrete. The material has good seepage resistance, seepage pressure up to 0.7-0.8 MPa, good volume stability, 28 d shrinkage rate of 10-4 orders of magni-tude. The research results were applied in the backfilling project of Xintun Station of Qingdao Metro Line 6, which showed excellent mobility, greatly saving construction cost and time, and the test results met the project requirements. This study takes into account the requirements of material performance and the proportion of solid waste mixing, and under the premise of meeting the engineering requirements of backfill materials, it can effectively absorb fly ash, slag and other bulk solid waste, and has achieved good economic and environmental benefits. © The Author(s) 2025.

Unknown geology ahead of the tunnel boring machine(TBM)brings a large safety risk for tunnel *** ahead-prospecting using TBM drilling noise as a source can achieve near-real-time detection,meeting the requirements of TBM rapid *** wavefield retrieval is the key data processing step for the efficient utilization of TBM drilling *** traditional solution is based on cross-correlation to extract reflected waves,but the reference waves remain in the result,disturbing the imaging and interpre-tation of the adverse *** solve this problem,the deep learning method was introduced in wavefield retrieval to improve the accu-racy of geological *** trained a deep neural network(DNN)with its strong nonlinear mapping capability to transform seismic data from TBM drilling noise to data from the active *** issue lies in its features for this specific tunnel task,including the decay of the seismic signal with time and the incomplete spatial ***,we improved a classical DNN with the time constraint as an additional input,and an additional pre-decoder to enlarge the receptive ***,a loss function weighted by the ground truth and time constraint is improved to achieve an accurate retrieval of the effective signal,considering the little effective information in tunnel ***,the workflow of the proposed method was given,and a dataset designed with reference to the field case was employed to train the *** proposed method accurately retrieved the reflection signal with higher dominant frequen-cies,which helped improve the accuracy of *** simulations and imaging on typical geological models show that the pro-posed method can suppress reference waves and get more accurate results with fewer *** proposed method has been applied in the Gaoligongshan Tunnel and imaged two abnormal zones,providing meaningful geological information for TBM drilling and tunnel construction

The seismic design of bridges is vital for safety and functionality, especially for skewed bridges with asymmetrical geometry. This study assesses the impact of seismic design criteria on the seismic performance of Chilean skewed bridges. Fragility curves for bridges designed under the current design criteria are compared with those prior to 2010. Nonlinear analytical models, of typical Chilean bridges are subjected to ground motions records to obtain the damage probabilities of the bridges. The fragility assessment reveals that changes in design criteria alter component damage probabilities, with a more pronounced effect observed for skewed bridges compared to straight bridges. Additionally, current seismic design criteria reduce superstructure displacement and rotation but increase substructure stresses. Insights from this study contribute to the evaluation of seismic performance and offer recommendations for reinforcing vulnerable bridges. © 2024 The Author(s).
