A novel scheme for single-rate compression of material and texture attributes for triangular meshes is proposed in this work. For the material coding, it proposes a novel approach based on breadth-first surface traversal, exploiting the local coherence of the material attributes among neighboring facets;for the texture coordinate coding, it proposes a similar-triangle-based prediction method, exploiting the correlation between 3D geometry and its texture-space parameterization. As a result, the proposed algorithm achieves efficient coding of the material and the texture attributes, as experimentally demonstrated.

The cohesive collective motion (flocking, swarming) of autonomous agents is ubiquitously observed and exploited in both natural and man-made settings, thus, minimal models for its description are essential. In a model with continuous space and time we find that if two particles arrive symmetrically in a plane at a large angle, then (i) radial repulsion and (ii) linear self-propelling toward a fixed preferred speed are sufficient for them to depart at a smaller angle. For this local gain of momentum explicit velocity alignment is not necessary, nor are adhesion or attraction, inelasticity or anisotropy of the particles, or nonlinear drag. With many particles obeying these microscopic rules of motion we find that their spatial confinement to a square with periodic boundaries (which is an indirect form of attraction) leads to stable macroscopic ordering. As a function of the strength of added noise we see—at finite system sizes—a critical slowing down close to the order-disorder boundary and a discontinuous transition. After varying the density of particles at constant system size and varying the size of the system with constant particle density we predict that in the infinite system size (or density) limit the hysteresis loop disappears and the transition becomes continuous. We note that animals, humans, drones, etc., tend to move asynchronously and are often more responsive to motion than positions. Thus, for them velocity-based continuous models can provide higher precision than coordinate-based models. An additional characteristic and realistic feature of the model is that convergence to the ordered state is fastest at a finite density, which is in contrast to models applying (discontinuous) explicit velocity alignments and discretized time. To summarize, we find that the investigated model can provide a minimal description of flocking.

Cine MRI is an imaging technique for visualizing the left ventricle wall motion in a heart beating cycle. The paper proposed a method to semi-automatically segment the left ventricle (LV) boundaries from a stack of cine MRI and build a LV mesh. The different intensities in the MRI are modeled with the mixture of Gaussian method. The thresholds between them are semi-automatically determined by K-means initialization and the expectation maximization (EM) method. The spatial constrain is added into the model with active contour models, which fit explicit contours on the boundary of the area of interest. We propose a marching cube alike initialization method of the active contour models. A 3D mesh is built from a stack of contours and smoothed afterwards. Stroke volume, myocardium mass and ejection function can be estimated from the LV boundary mesh and the endocardium mesh.

We present a novel adaptive color mapping method for virtual objects in mixed-reality environments. In several mixed-reality applications, added virtual objects should be visually indistinguishable from real objects. Recent mixed-reality methods use global-illumination algorithms to approach this goal. However, simulating the light distribution is not enough for visually plausible images. Since the observing camera has its very own transfer function from real-world radiance values to RGB colors, virtual objects look artificial just because their rendered colors do not match with those of the camera. Our approach combines an on-line camera characterization method with a heuristic to map colors of virtual objects to colors as they would be seen by the observing camera. Previous tone-mapping functions were not designed for use in mixed-reality systems and thus did not take the camera-specific behavior into account. In contrast, our method takes the camera into account and thus can also handle changes of its parameters during runtime. The results show that virtual objects look visually more plausible than by just applying tone-mapping operators.
