Clustering has been applied in many field of management for better decision making with a lot of algorithms such as K-means. Based on Extenics, we found that most of algorithms calculate the similarity of elements in a certain set by distance to each other, they focus on the position of each element and neglect their criteria. However, in the real world, there are usually exist criteria to score the elements. Therefore, we present a new clustering method. In our method, we use distance in Extenics for similarity calculating based on criteria, and compared a simple case with traditional K-means algorithm. The results show that our method is more practical and has much potential value for data mining and knowledge management.

Vehicle detection is a foundational and significant task in video surveillance systems. In this paper, a vehicle detection method using a deformable model and symmetry is proposed. First, we learn the active basis model (ABM) from the target training sample set by using the shared sketch algorithm. Then, we utilize the edge information obtained by ABM and HSV color information to do symmetry analysis for vehicle objects. The ABM can detect vehicles in various poses, shapes, and sizes for its deformability. By doing edge and color symmetry analysis, subtle difference between two images and environment noises can be adapted. The results of experiments indicate that our approach is capable of detection different vehicles and localization vehicle in bad environment. What's important, the detection results support the capability of the proposed method to enable the introduction of novel intelligent transportation systems applications. © 2013 IEEE.

High complexity of understanding user's current situation is a crucial barrier to popularize context aware applications on smartphone. In order to overcome this barrier, we propose a context aware engine which eases the development of intelligent applications. Key feature of the engine is dynamic reconfiguration of the knowledge base depending on the current environments using linked data. We validated the usefulness of this feature via two in-house applications.

Modern power system is a typical multi-level complex giant system consisting of physical infrastructures, human operators, and social resources, etc. The conventional analytical methods and simulation systems can't provide sufficient guidance for its operation and management, because they are mainly based on physical models, natural phenomenon, or other existing control methods which are based on reductionism. ACP approach, mainly consisting of artificial systems (A), computational experiments (C) and parallel execution (P), which is based on holism and complex system theory, has its specific advantages in the research on power systems. In this article, ACP approach is applied to build up artificial power system (APS) by using multi-agent complex networks. With the help of APS, actual power system's control, scheduling, optimization and management can be improved further via providing theoretical guidance and technical support for the rolling optimizations in normal situations and emergency management in abnormal situations. As a case study, an APS constructed with actual data from North China power grid is constructed and its vulnerability is simulated and analyzed under random, dynamic and static attacks. © 2012 IEEE.

To further enhance emergency management skills of an organisation's emergency response personnel, emergency response training,especially 3D emergency drill, is currently becoming more and more important in the petrochemical sector. So, a novel 3D emergency drills system is designed and developed based on ACP approach, which can be used for mocking emergency response plan drills and evaluating the plan. A case study reveals that the performance of the system is good and the system can meet the needs of emergency response training and optimizing emergency response plan in petrochemical plants. © 2012 IEEE.

In recent years ontologies have been used for knowledge representation in different domains, such as energy management and manufacturing. researchers have developed approaches in applying ontologies for intelligent energy management in households. In the manufacturing domain, ontologies have been used for knowledge management in order to provide a common formal understanding between the stakeholders, who have different background knowledge. Energy management in a manufacturing company involves different organizational entities and technical processes. This paper proposes an approach to applying ontology for intelligent energy management in discrete manufacturing companies. The ontology provides a formal knowledge representation that is accessible by different human stakeholders as well as machines in the company. This paper also demonstrates the methods used to construct and to process the ontology.

Traffic signal coordination has long been a hot topic in intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research. Simulation-based optimization is an important method to optimize the coordination designs as the traffic systems are not easily described by mathematical models accurately. For the traffic simulator in the method, micro-simulation is becoming more and more popular than the macroscopic or mesoscopic simulation in recent years, as the micro-simulation can describe drivers' decision-making process and their driving behaviors in the framework of ITS. However, the computing burden for the micro-simulation is usually very heavy as a large number of vehicles are modeled and simulated separately. For the optimizer in the method, iterative algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are widely used to find the global optimal solutions. However, these algorithms usually take too much time to converge when a large-scale road network is encountered. To alleviate the computing burden and speed up the convergence, we build an agent-based traffic simulator and employ Ordinal Optimization (OO) as the optimizer. We accelerate both the simulator and the optimizer with Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which has been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the OO method and the power of GPU for parallel computing. © 2012 IEEE.
