Modern power system is a typical multi-level complex giant system consisting of physical infrastructures, human operators, and social resources, etc. The conventional analytical methods and simulation systems can't provide sufficient guidance for its operation and management, because they are mainly based on physical models, natural phenomenon, or other existing control methods which are based on reductionism. ACP approach, mainly consisting of artificial systems (A), computational experiments (C) and parallel execution (P), which is based on holism and complex system theory, has its specific advantages in the research on power systems. In this article, ACP approach is applied to build up artificial power system (APS) by using multi-agent complex networks. With the help of APS, actual power system's control, scheduling, optimization and management can be improved further via providing theoretical guidance and technical support for the rolling optimizations in normal situations and emergency management in abnormal situations. As a case study, an APS constructed with actual data from North China power grid is constructed and its vulnerability is simulated and analyzed under random, dynamic and static attacks. © 2012 IEEE.

To further enhance emergency management skills of an organisation's emergency response personnel, emergency response training,especially 3D emergency drill, is currently becoming more and more important in the petrochemical sector. So, a novel 3D emergency drills system is designed and developed based on ACP approach, which can be used for mocking emergency response plan drills and evaluating the plan. A case study reveals that the performance of the system is good and the system can meet the needs of emergency response training and optimizing emergency response plan in petrochemical plants. © 2012 IEEE.

In recent years ontologies have been used for knowledge representation in different domains, such as energy management and manufacturing. researchers have developed approaches in applying ontologies for intelligent energy management in households. In the manufacturing domain, ontologies have been used for knowledge management in order to provide a common formal understanding between the stakeholders, who have different background knowledge. Energy management in a manufacturing company involves different organizational entities and technical processes. This paper proposes an approach to applying ontology for intelligent energy management in discrete manufacturing companies. The ontology provides a formal knowledge representation that is accessible by different human stakeholders as well as machines in the company. This paper also demonstrates the methods used to construct and to process the ontology.

Traffic signal coordination has long been a hot topic in intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research. Simulation-based optimization is an important method to optimize the coordination designs as the traffic systems are not easily described by mathematical models accurately. For the traffic simulator in the method, micro-simulation is becoming more and more popular than the macroscopic or mesoscopic simulation in recent years, as the micro-simulation can describe drivers' decision-making process and their driving behaviors in the framework of ITS. However, the computing burden for the micro-simulation is usually very heavy as a large number of vehicles are modeled and simulated separately. For the optimizer in the method, iterative algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are widely used to find the global optimal solutions. However, these algorithms usually take too much time to converge when a large-scale road network is encountered. To alleviate the computing burden and speed up the convergence, we build an agent-based traffic simulator and employ Ordinal Optimization (OO) as the optimizer. We accelerate both the simulator and the optimizer with Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which has been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the OO method and the power of GPU for parallel computing. © 2012 IEEE.

Traffic micro-simulation is an important tool in the intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) research. In the micro-simulation, a bottom up system can be built up by the interactions of vehicle agents, road agents, traffic lights agents, etc. The Artificial societies, Computational experiments, and Parallel execution (ACP) approach suggests integrating other metropolitan systems such as logistic, infrastructure, legal and regulatory, weather and environmental systems to build an Artificial Transportation System (ATS) to help solve ITS problems. This is reasonable as the transportation system is complex that is affected by many systems interacting with each other. However, there is a challenge that the computing burden can be very heavy as there can be many agents of different kinds interacting in parallel in ATS. In recent years, the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have been applied successfully in many areas for parallel computing. Compared with the traditional CPU cluster, GPU has an obvious advantage of low cost of hardware and electricity consumption. In this paper, we build a parallel traffic simulation module of ATS with GPU. The simulation results are reasonable and a maximum speedup factor of 105 is obtained compared with the CPU implementations. © 2012 IEEE.

To investigate the influences of performance management rules on human behavior in a chemical plant workshop, we construct an artificial workshop. It mainly contains human behavior model, workshop environment model including the definition of work position performance management rules and production events, and their interaction rules. The human behavior model is built based on DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance) behavior model and the Agent technology. A platform for workshop human behavior computing is finally created for computational experiments on performance management and decision-making. The platform can be used as a support for refined management in the chemical plant. © 2012 IEEE.

Despite the increasing request for intelligent applications with the heavy use of smart phone, little of them are available in daily life. One reason must be the high complexity of understanding user's situation. For application (app) developers, knowing user's context usually takes much more time and efforts than taking some useful actions. To help developing intelligent apps, we have proposed a mobile context-aware engine called intelligent Mobile Platform (IMP). It provides user's current context to apps as a background service in android mobile phones. Especially, depending on user's current environments such as location, active apps, etc., IMP dynamically extends or shrinks its knowledge base. We believe that this dynamic reconfiguration is essential for mobile environment where user continuously changes his/her location and contexts. In this paper, we describe the reconfiguration part in detail. This feature is tested by three in-house apps with the IMP prototype on SAMSUNG Galaxy S II phone.

MicroRNAs can regulate hundreds of target genes and play a pivotal role in a broad range of biological process. However, relatively little is known about how these highly connected miRNAs-target networks are remodelled in the context of various diseases. Here we examine the dynamic alteration of context-specific miRNA regulation to determine whether modified microRNAs regulation on specific biological processes is a useful information source for predicting cancer prognosis. A new concept, Context-specific miRNA activity (CoMi activity) is introduced to describe the statistical difference between the expression level of a miRNA's target genes and non-targets genes within a given gene set (context).

Service supply chain (SSC) has attracted more and more attention from academia and industry. Although there exists extensive product-based supply chain management models and methods, they are not applicable to the SSC as the differences between service and product. Besides, the existing supply chain management models and methods possess some common deficiencies. Because of the above reasons, this paper develops a novel value-oriented model for the management of SSC using the modeling methods of E3-value and Use Case Maps (UCMs). This model can not only resolve the problems of applicability and effectiveness of the existing supply chain management models and methods, but also answer the questions of 'why the management model is this?' and 'how to quantify the potential profitability of the supply chains?'. Meanwhile, the service business processes of SSC system can be established using its logic procedure. In addition, the model can also determine the value and benefits distribution of the entire service value chain and optimize the operations management performance of the service supply. ©2010 IEEE.
