Purpose: This study aims to examine the moderating role of generational identity in the relationship between user-generated content (UGC) and tourist destination image. It seeks to unveil the differential impact of UGC on the cognitive and affective dimensions of tourist destination image across generational cohorts: Generation Z, Millennials and Generation X. Design/methodology/approach: This study has an experimental design. It used online surveys to gather data from 317 participants recruited through social media channels. Participants were presented with both positive and negative UGC, and their responses were measured using cognitive and affective scales. Findings: This study reveals that UGC significantly affects both the cognitive and affective dimensions of the destination image. However, the impact on the cognitive aspect is moderated by generational differences, with distinct variations observed across Generation Z, Millennials and Generation X. No significant generational moderation was found for the affective dimension, indicating a universal influence of UGC on emotional perceptions of destinations. Practical implications: The findings suggest that marketers should tailor their communication strategies to the generational characteristics of their target audience, especially concerning the cognitive aspects of destination marketing. However, for affective appeals, a uniform strategy could be applied across generations, simplifying the approach for emotional marketing content. Originality/value: This research contributes to the extant literature by highlighting the importance of generational segmentation in the strategic marketing of tourism destinations. It extends the discourse to generational analysis, providing a more granular understanding of the interactions between tourists and UGC. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.

This work presents a novel Coverage Path Planning (CPP) framework integrating the Wavefront Algorithm with bidirectional A* to optimize path planning for Autonomous Ground Vehicles (AGVs) that inspect photovoltaic farms. The proposed framework combines the efficient propagation capabilities of the Wavefront Algorithm with the heuristic-driven optimization of bidirectional A*, comparing the results achieved to those from the individual algorithms. The framework was validated in a Software-In-The-Loop (SITL) simulation environment using Gazebo and the Robot Operating System (ROS), focusing on AGV-based inspection of ground infrastructure and cables beneath solar panels. The outcomes demonstrate significant coverage efficiency and overall robustness.

The Artificial Intelligence Act: Insights regarding its application and implications

This paper deals with Europe’s Artificial Intelligence Act, the first regulation on the subject and is considered an international milestone. Therefore, the introduction provides a historical overview of legislative developments on Artificial Intelligence in Europe until the current milestone, namely the approval of the AI Act text, which is currently being amended and translated into its official publication. Afterwards, the regulation is dealt with in detail; its nuances are presented, along with the conceptualisation of artificial intelligence in the regulation and the classification of artificial intelligence systems, which is based on risks to users, together with the mechanisms created to make the regulation more efficient, specifically the Artificial Intelligence Office. Ultimately, considering the great innovation on the subject, this work presents different opinions regarding the application of the regulation, its risk-based analysis and classification, expectations and views on the possible impacts of the act on the market, thereby seeking to expose society’s receptiveness to the regulation created. Therefore, based on the discussion points, it can be concluded that the regulation, which will soon be in effect, brings different feelings to citizens and members of the European market, who are still insecure about the risk-based approach used, harbouring feelings of fear about the limitation of innovation. However, at the same time, there is hope, given that regulation is necessary to guarantee safe innovation in line with the fundamental rights set out by the European Union. It can also be concluded that the approval and forthcoming publication of the act is a small step towards the challenges that will arise. It is certain that, regardless of the different opinions that exist, it is necessary to start implementing the act to analyse its effects on the market, society, politics, the economy and, above all, on innovations in artificial intelligence systems.

The Analog Ensemble (AnEn) method can be used to reconstruct incomplete time series using correlated series. Since the AnEn method may use data including several variables through long periods of time, its storage and computational cost may be substantial, slowing down reconstructions. This paper presents a full GPU implementation of the AnEn method, based on PyCUDA, that leads to a significant a cceleration of its execution. The implementation resorts to several techniques that seek to minimize the consumption of GPU global memory in the various steps of the AnEn algorithm, thus making room for larger input datasets. This is further reinforced by the use of batch processing as a way to automatically adapt the datasets size to the GPU memory available. The GPU implementation was tested on a meteorological dataset spanning 10 years, exhibiting a 30-fold speedup in the reconstruction time against a comparable CPUbased multicore version executed with up to 48 cores. The impact on the reconstruction error of changes on several important parameters of the implementation was also assessed.

Analyses of pandemics’ quantitative data and economic indicators

The proposed work is a study that attempts to evaluate the financial impacts of pandemic mitigation strategies in order to be part of a central model that forecasts different scenarios in pandemic situations considering the impact of mitigation procedures in the Economic System and Healthcare System. Economic fluctuations impose a more significant challenge on prediction models, and pandemic modeling methodologies are primarily concerned with the variability of epidemic features, the efficiency of control measures over time, and the development of different viral variants. In this context, this paper correlates economic indicators with quantitative parameters of the last three respiratory virus pandemics, specifically the GDP and the unemployment rates, with a sample encompassing three European countries, the United Kingdom (UK), France, and Germany, that pass through the pandemics under study. The results provide intriguing information, such as the moderated and weak correlation factor between deaths with GDP in the Spanish flu and Swine flu, and the WWI and the 2009 crises can explain which. On the other hand, the correlation factors associated with COVID-19 show a weak to moderate correlation parameter with GDP and unemployment rates but present interesting numbers when the number of people fully vaccinated is compared with GDP. Also, as the correlation factor does not presente a strong relation between daily deaths and GDP, this indicates a necessity for comparison with other economic parameters.

Extended Reality is a technology that is continually growing and popularizing, being considered by many researchers, organizations, and companies an essential component for future technological and social progresses across different sectors, and among those sectors where is being explored is the Healthcare sector. This sector, on the other hand, is in a severe need of new methodologies and technologies to empower the health care personnel as well to promote the well-being of the patients as it was highlighted in the worse way possible through the events that occurred in the recent pandemic of the COVID-19. In this paper is presented a bibliometric analysis over the last ten years of R&D in Extended Reality applied to the Healthcare sector, with the goal to identify current pioneers as well trends and topics of investigation, these results are presented and discussed to contribute with insights to the actors in the Healthcare Sectors as well developers and researchers of Extended Reality.

Comparison of Neural Network Architectures for Diabetes Prediction

Diabetes represents a significant global health challenge, with millions of individuals affected and substantial impacts on healthcare systems. In this study, we compare two neural network architectures for diabetes prediction: the Feedforward Neural Network (FFNN) and the Cascade-Forward Backpropagation Neural Network (CFBPNN). Utilizing the Diabetes Prediction Dataset, comprising 100,000 samples, and after a balanced result, 17,000 samples were obtained. The networks are trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt and Resilient Backpropagation algorithms, and performance metrics, including precision, sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F1-score, and computational time, are evaluated. Results indicate that the FFNN architecture paired with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm demonstrates superior diagnostic prediction accuracy with 91,10%. However, this comes at the cost of longer computational time compared to the CFBPNN.

Flow models over flat porous surfaces have applications in natural processes, such as material, food, chemical processing, or mountain mudflow simulations. The development of simplified analytical or numerical models can predict characteristics such as velocity, pressure, deviation length, and even temperature of such flows for geophysical and engineering purposes. In this context, there is considerable interest in theoretical and experimental models. Mathematical models to represent such phenomena for fluid mechanics have continuously been developed and implemented. Given this, we propose a mathematical and simulation model to describe a free-flowing flow parallel to a porous material and its transition zone. The objective of the application is to analyze the influence of the porous matrix on the flow under different matrix properties. We implement a Computational Fluid Dynamics scheme using the Finite Volume Method to simulate and calculate the numerical solutions for case studies. However, computational applications of this type demand high performance, requiring parallel execution techniques. Due to this, it is necessary to modify the sequential version of the code. So, we propose a methodology describing the steps required to adapt and improve the code. This approach decreases 5.3% the execution time of the sequential version of the code. Next, we adopt OpenMP for parallel versions and instantiate parallel code flows and executions on multi-core. We get a speedup of 10.4 by using 12 threads. The paper provides simulations that offer the correct understanding, modeling, and construction of abrupt transitions between free flow and porous media. The process presented here could expand to the simulations of other porous media problems. Furthermore, customized simulations require little processing time, thanks to parallel processing.

Electrical signals from the human body are constantly the focus of research, searching for a better understanding of physiological events, discovering early signs of disease, and improving life quality. Developing devices that allow research beyond the usual requirements and allow easy adaptation regarding the system’s acquisition, conditioning, and processing parts could be a step toward better understanding some behaviours. Therefore, this work focused on designing a system that goes from the discrete components to a graphical interface, allowing user control of parameters to set the acquisition in a way that favours the specific signal of interest. The resulting system allows the user to change parameters regarding the analogue and digital filtering, sampling frequency and events detection, namely R-peaks, in the electrocardiogram, to estimate heart rate and its frequency fluctuation, and muscle contraction in electromyogram, to analyse contraction strength and muscle fatigue. The system also allows the data to be stored, aiming to generate datasets to further process the data in AI-based algorithms.

Decision support systems for lower limb rehabilitation using electrical stimulation—A review

This paper presents a comprehensive review of Decision Support Systems (DSS) for lower limb rehabilitation using Electrical Stimulation (ES), employing a rigorous two-part methodology. The first part involves a bibliometric analysis of articles from 1980 to 2023, while the second part is a systematic review of studies from 2019 to 2023, addressing six key research questions. The review identifies the main characteristics of DSS, such as data usage, sensitive data protection, reasoning techniques, and validation processes. It highlights the development focus on joint control systems, increasing interest in biofeedback and AI applications, and significant interest in FES-Cycling. Despite advancements, “decision support” remains in the early stages with simple architectures and limited data handling. Conversely, studies show advanced ES control models validated with neurological patients. This article emphasizes the need for sophisticated DSS that integrate data protection, reasoning methods, and patient monitoring to enhance rehabilitation outcomes and identifies significant gaps for future research.
