A COVID-19 time series forecasting model based on MLP ANN

With the accelerated spread of COVID-19 worldwide and its potentially fatal effects on human health, the development of a tool that effectively describes and predicts the number of infected cases and deaths over time becomes relevant. This makes it possible for administrative sectors and the population itself to become aware and act more precisely. In this work, a machine learning model based on the multilayer Perceptron artificial neural network structure was used, which effectively predicts the behavior of the series mentioned in up to six days. The model, which is trained with data from 30 countries together in a 20-day context, is assessed using global and local MSE and MAE measures. For the construction of training and test sets, four time series (number of: accumulated infected cases, new cases, accumulated deaths and new deaths) from each country are used, which are started on the day of the first confirmed infection case. In order to soften the sudden transitions between samples, a moving average filter with a window size 3 and a normalization by maximum value were used. It is intended to make the model's predictions available online, collaborating with the fight against the pandemic.

Compact high torque/power density motors are needed for electrical vehicles in modern electric cars, this calls for effective temperature control of the electric motors. The voltage level in automotive spans a large range, usually between 96Vdc and 800Vdc, which asks for flexibility in the development of the powertrains in general, and of their electrical machines in particular. This paper's primary objective is to evaluate the thermal analysis of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine at different voltage levels of the power supply.

Mobile multi-robot systems are versatile alternatives for improving single-robot capacities in many applications, such as logistics, environmental monitoring, search and rescue, photogrammetry, etc. In this sense, this kind of system must have a reliable communication network between the vehicles, ensuring that information exchanged within the nodes has little losses. This work simulates and evaluates the use of autoencoders for image compression in a multi-UAV simulation with ROS and Gazebo for a generic surveillance application. The autoencoder model was developed with the Keras library, presenting good training and validation results, with training and validation accuracy of 70%, and a Peak Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 40dB. The use of the CPU for the simulated UAVs for processing and sending compressed images through the network is 25% faster. The results showed that this compression methodology is a good choice for improving the system’s performance without losing too much information.

To increase the penetration of renewable energy sources into electrical systems, it is essential to lessen renewable energy curtailment. Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) systems are a promising alternative to achieve lower curtailment rates. This work analyses the effect of a PHS system in an electrical network regarding renewable energy curtailment behaviour. The analysis is addressed through an optimal power flow formulation to minimize power loss while satisfying operating and renewable energy curtailment constraints. Preliminary results for a modified IEEE 14-bus test feeder suggested that implementing the PHS decreased transmission losses by 2.2% and mitigated 16.8% of curtailed renewable energy for whole- year simulations.

One main foundation of Industry 4.0 is the connectivity of devices and systems using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, where Cyber-physical systems (CPS) act as the backbone infrastructure based on distributed and decentralized structures. This approach provides significant benefits, namely improved performance, responsiveness and reconfigurability, but also brings some problems in terms of security, as the devices and systems become vulnerable to cyberattacks. This paper describes the implementation of several mechanisms to increase the security in a self-organized cyber-physical conveyor system, based on multi-agent systems (MAS) and build up with different individual modular and intelligent conveyor modules. For this purpose, the JADE-S add-on is used to enforce more security controls, also an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is created supported by Machine Learning (ML) techniques that analyses the communication between agents, enabling to monitor and analyse the events that occur in the system, extracting signs of intrusions, together they contribute to mitigate cyberattacks.

The digital transformation that is on-going worldwide, and triggered by the Industry 4.0 initiative, has brought to the surface new concepts and emergent technologies. One of these new concepts is the Digital Twin, which recently started gaining momentum, and is related to creating a virtual copy of the physical system, providing a connection between the real and virtual systems to collect and analyze and simulate data in the virtual model to improve the performance of the real system. The benefits of using the digital twin approach is attracting significant attention and interest from research and industry communities in the last few years, and its importance will increase in the upcoming years. Having this in mind, this paper surveys and discusses the digital twin concept in the context of the 4th industrial revolution, particularly focusing the concept and functionalities, the associated technologies, the industrial applications and the research challenges. The applicability of the digital concept is illustrated by the virtualisation of an UR3 collaborative robot which used the V-REP simulation environment and the Modbus communication protocol.

This study proposes a framework for short-term production planning of a Portuguese company operating as a tier 2 supplier in the automotive sector. The framework is intended to support the decision-making process regarding a single progressive hydraulic press, which is used to manufacture cold-stamped parts for exhaust systems. The framework consists of two sequential levels: (1) a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to determine the optimal production quantities per week while minimizing the total cost;(2) a dynamic production sequencing rule for scheduling operations on the hydraulic press. The two levels are combined and implemented in Excel, where the MILP model is solved using the Solver add-in, and the second level uses the optimal production quantities as inputs to determine the production sequence using a dynamic priority rule. To validate the framework, a proposed optimal plan was compared to a real plan executed by the company, and it was found that the framework could save up to 22.1% of the total cost observed in reality while still satisfying demand. To address uncertainties, the framework requires a rolling weekly planning horizon. © 2023, The Author(s).

The video projector serves as an essential device for various purposes, such as education, corporate functions, and conferences. This article presents an affordable setup aimed at upgrading video projection equipment, including older models, with enhanced management and sharing features. The proposed solution tackles frequent connectivity challenges arising from dif-ferences in connectors, transmission methods, and mismatches in configurations (like frequency and resolution) between computers and projectors. Such incompatibilities often result in delays and hinder the effective use of video projectors. By incorporating a Raspberry Pi and three dedicated applications, this system introduces an intuitive solution that supports innovative teaching and work methods.

The increase volume of vehicles circulating in large cities and the limited space for parking are factors that motivate the adoption of systems capable of dealing with such problems. In this context, smart parking systems are suitable solutions to avoid the traffic congestion, the air pollution and the long search to find a free parking spot. The inclusion of emergent ICT technologies and artificial intelligence techniques, and particularly using multi-agent systems, combined under the scope of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), ensure flexibility, modularity, adaptability and the decentralization of intelligence through autonomous, cooperative and proactive entities. Such smart parking systems can be easily adapted to any type of vehicle to be parked and scalable in terms of the number of parking spots and drivers/vehicles. A fundamental issue in these agent-based CPS parking systems is the interconnection between the cyber and physical counterparts, i.e. between the software agents and the physical asset controllers to access the parking spots. This paper focuses on developing an agent-based CPS for a smart parking system and particularly addressing how the software agents are interconnected with the physical asset controllers using proper Internet of Things technologies. The proposed approach was implemented in two distinct parking systems, one for bicycles and another for cars, showing an efficient, modular, adaptable and scalable operation.

Human integration in cyber-physical systems (CPS) is playing a crucial role in the era of the digital transformation, notably because humans are seen as the most flexible driver in an automated system. Two main reference models for human activities in production systems are usually considered, namely Human-in-the-Loop (HitL) and Human-in-the-Mesh (HitM), which present different requirements and challenges. This paper aims to overview the different activities related to the human integration in CPS, particularly discussing the requirements that can be found in HitL and HitM models for the different phases of the decision-making process, namely detect, determine, develop and describe; and analyzing the technologies and computational tools to support these human activities. The human integration in CPS is illustrated through three examples, where humans playing the operator and manager roles are integrated in the PERFoRM and FAR-EDGE ecosystems, covering different phases of the decision-making process.
