The increase volume of vehicles circulating in large cities and the limited space for parking are factors that motivate the adoption of systems capable of dealing with such problems. In this context, smart parking systems are suitable solutions to avoid the traffic congestion, the air pollution and the long search to find a free parking spot. The inclusion of emergent ICT technologies and artificial intelligence techniques, and particularly using multi-agent systems, combined under the scope of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), ensure flexibility, modularity, adaptability and the decentralization of intelligence through autonomous, cooperative and proactive entities. Such smart parking systems can be easily adapted to any type of vehicle to be parked and scalable in terms of the number of parking spots and drivers/vehicles. A fundamental issue in these agent-based CPS parking systems is the interconnection between the cyber and physical counterparts, i.e. between the software agents and the physical asset controllers to access the parking spots. This paper focuses on developing an agent-based CPS for a smart parking system and particularly addressing how the software agents are interconnected with the physical asset controllers using proper Internet of Things technologies. The proposed approach was implemented in two distinct parking systems, one for bicycles and another for cars, showing an efficient, modular, adaptable and scalable operation.

Harmonic to Noise Ratio (HNR) measures the ratio between periodic and non-periodic components of a speech sound. It has become more and more important in the vocal acoustic analysis to diagnose pathologic voices. The measure of this parameter can be done with Praat software that is commonly accept by the scientific community has an accurate measure. Anyhow, this measure is dependent with the type of window used and its length. In this paper an analysis of the influence of the window and its length was made. The Hanning, Hamming and Blackman windows and the lengths between 6 and 24 glottal periods were experimented. Speech files of control subjects and pathologic subjects were used. The results showed that the Hanning window with the length of 12 glottal periods gives measures of HNR more close to the Praat measures.

Industry 4.0 is re-shaping the manufacturing world, and amongst the several associated emerging methods and technologies, Digital Twin is becoming a popular approach both in industry and academia. However, the lack of knowledge about the characteristics, functionalities, best practices and benefits that it can provide, especially for small and medium enterprises, constraints its wider adoption. The use of real applications and demonstrators can contribute to exposing stakeholders to these new and innovative technologies and approaches, showing the applicability of Digital Twins. This paper presents several experiments in implementing Digital Twin for automation scenarios, considering different technologies and functionalities, namely in terms of virtualisation, connectivity and monitoring. Lessons learnt and challenges are also provided as a result of the experimental implementations.

The paper aims at utilizing machine learning (ML) towards designing an early warning forest fire detection system. With the aid of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart edge computing, an embedded system that utilizes sensors’ fusion technology, machine vision and ML to early detect forest fire has been proposed. Different from most of the proposed fire detection systems in the literature, which either utilize vision or sensors’-based approaches to detect the fire, the proposed system utilizes both approaches jointly, which in turn will make it more accurate for fire detection. Furthermore, this paper focuses on implementing the proposed system utilizing a smart edge node and discusses the incurred technical challenges and how they have been solved.

Artificial Intelligence has been introduced in many applications, namely in artificial vision-based systems with object detection tasks. This paper presents an object localization system with a motivation to use it in autonomous mobile robots at robotics competitions. The system aims to allow robots to accomplish their tasks more efficiently. Object detection is performed using a camera and artificial intelligence based on the YOLOv4 Tiny detection model. An algorithm was developed that uses the data from the system to estimate the parameters of location, distance, and orientation based on the pinhole camera model and trigonometric modelling. It can be used in smart identification procedures of objects. Practical tests and results are presented, constantly locating the objects and with errors between 0.16 and 3.8 cm, concluding that the object localization system is adequate for autonomous mobile robots.

Diabetic Retinopathy Grading using Blended Deep Learning

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that is mainly caused by the damage of the blood vessels located in the retina. Retinal screening contributes to early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. DR has five stages, namely healthy, mild, moderate, severe and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Computer-aided diagnosis approaches are needed to allow an early detection and treatment. Several automated deep learning (DL) based approaches have been proven to be a powerful tool for DR grading. However, these approaches are usually based on one DL architecture only which could produce over-fitted results. Another identified problem is the use of imbalanced datasets. In this paper, we proposed a blended deep learning approach obtained by training several individual DL models, using a 5-fold cross-validation technique and combining their predictions in a final score. This blended model highlights each individual model where it performs best and discredits where it performs poorly, increasing the robustness of the results. The experiments were conducted on a balanced DDR dataset containing 33310 retina fundus images equally distributed for the DR grades. An explainability algorithm was also used to show the efficiency of the proposed approach in detecting DR signs.

Photovoltaic water pumping systems are available as kits to supply water where the grid does not go. These kits usually are made by multinationals and based on specific components, making the most of small and very small companies, who usually install these systems, dependent on others. Thankfully these companies can develop their own solutions with standard frequency converters and AC pumps. An alternative is to connect the standard frequency converters to a photovoltaic string with a DC voltage of the order of some hundreds of volts. This implies in more than 2 kW of power installed. For many applications, more than 2 kW would be oversized. This paper presents a review of photovoltaic water pumping systems based on standard frequency converters and proposes new approaches for low power applications requiring only up to four modules. These approaches are being investigated and evaluated in cooperation with a company.

The active management of the networks with high penetration of renewable energy sources faces several challenges. To maximize the utilization of low carbon electricity, the curtailment of generator units using renewables should be limited and fair among units. In this work, an attempt has been made to solve the optimal power flow using an improved Genetic Algorithm. The optimal flow formulation is oriented to the efficiency of the network, under the boundary restrictions of limited curtailment of the output of distributed generators based on renewables and non-discriminatory behaviour. The results obtained from a IEEE 14-bus test system have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach.

Modern manufacturing systems are facing new challenges related to the fast-changing market conditions, increased global competition and rapid technological developments, imposing strong requirements in terms of flexibility, robustness and reconfigurability. In this context, the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) paradigm relies on digitizing industrial assets to fulfil these requirements. The implementation of this digitization process is being promoted by the so-called Asset Administration Shell (AAS), a digital representation of an asset that complies with standardization and interoperability strategies. At this moment, a significant part of the AAS developments is more focused on the information management of the asset along its lifecycle and not concerned with aspects of intelligence and collaboration, which are fundamental aspects to develop I4.0 compliant solutions. In this sense, this paper presents an agent-based AAS approach for enhancing the digitization process of assets, considering agents to embed distributed intelligence and collaborative functions, service orientation to support interoperability, and holonic principles to provide the system organization. The proposed agent-based AAS was implemented in an industrial automation system aiming to analyze its applicability.

The transport of goods is one of the main economic activities today and an essential pillar of many other activities, with a well-defined growth trend and with increasingly demanding needs, namely in terms of quality of service, whether this is related to meeting deadlines or the conditions of carriage. This is particularly relevant when we talk about delicate, perishable goods of high commercial or even sentimental value. The paper proposes an architecture for carriers to provide a service with guaranteed transport conditions without major changes to the operating model and at a lower cost. Currently, this quality assurance is essentially based on validation, often empirical, of the state of the goods after delivery. It is not even possible to speak of confirmation upon delivery, as in reality, most operators avoid this confrontation. The existence of services with a guarantee of compliance with the agreed conditions for transport not only conveys the necessary confidence to the end customer, but can even promote other businesses, but above all promotes the accountability of all actors in the value chain, fostering process optimization and waste reduction. On the other hand, as this is a goods tracking solution, knowing the actual flow of goods helps identify opportunities for improvement. The architecture is based on IoT, cloud, and blockchain technologies.
