In the current era of extensive data usage across industries, data collection, preservation, utilization, and organization has become more challenging and nuanced because it is necessary to consider critical concerns such as data security, privacy, and legal issues, apart from efficiency issues. As a result, Thai government initiated the idea and effort to implement data governance throughout the government agency. This paper showcases the implementation of data governance in a governmental research organization with highly diverse structured and unstructured data. The implementation follows international standards and the guidelines of the Digital Government Development Agency (DGA). The executives set up the working body, including the data Governance Council and data Stewards, responsible for setting up and deploying policies and regulations. Creating awareness and the necessary infrastructure are the main focuses in the first-year phase. The metadata was designed to extend DGA's version and match the organization's unique requirements. A data catalog platform was developed accordingly. We organized activities to boost employee awareness and participation, including advertising and data catalog platform training. By the end of the first year of implementation, every organization unit had registered at least one data record into the data catalog. © 2023 IEEE.

HmBERT: Historical Multilingual Language Models for Named Entity Recognition

Compared to standard Named Entity Recognition (NER), identifying persons, locations, and organizations in historical texts constitutes a big challenge. To obtain machine-readable corpora, the historical text is usually scanned and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) needs to be performed. As a result, the historical corpora contain errors. Also, entities like location or organization can change over time, which poses another challenge. Overall, historical texts come with several peculiarities that differ greatly from modern texts and large labeled corpora for training a neural tagger are hardly available for this domain. In this work, we tackle NER for historical German, English, French, Swedish, and Finnish by training large historical language models. We circumvent the need for large amounts of labeled data by using unlabeled data for pretraining a language model. We propose hmBert, a historical multilingual BERT-based language model, and release the model in several versions of different sizes. Furthermore, we evaluate the capability of hmBert by solving downstream NER as part of this year's HIPE-2022 shared task and provide detailed analysis and insights. For the Multilingual Classical Commentary coarse-grained NER challenge, our tagger HISTeria outperforms the other teams' models for two out of three languages. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Graph convolutional networks: Analysis, improvements and results

In the current era of neural networks and big data, higher dimensional data is processed for automation of different application areas. Graphs represent a complex data organization in which dependencies between more than one object or activity occur. Due to the high dimensionality, this data creates challenges for machine learning algorithms. Graph convolutional networks were introduced to utilize the convolutional models concepts that shows good results. In this context, we enhanced two of the existing Graph convolutional network models by proposing four enhancements. These changes includes: hyper parameters optimization, convex combination of activation functions, topological information enrichment through clustering coefficients measure, and structural redesign of the network through addition of dense layers. We present extensive results on four state-of-art benchmark datasets. The performance is notable not only in terms of lesser computational cost compared to competitors, but also achieved competitive results for three of the datasets and state-of-the-art for the fourth dataset. The ability to predict response to medication treatment of depressed patients, either early in the course of therapy or before treatment even begins can avoid trials of ineffective therapy and save patients from prolonged intervals of suffering. Symptom alleviation requires 4-6 weeks after starting current antidepressive medication. Based on the data basis of the patients and their EEG before and on the 7th day of treatment we apply data mining, causal discovery and machine learning approaches to discover interactive patterns between patient’s brain regions to separate the treatment responders from non-responders. In this paper we report the preliminary results of our international project "learning Synchronization Patterns in Multivariate Neural Signals for Prediction of Response to Antidepressants" ongoing at the University of Vienna, the Czech Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Mental Health in the Czech Republic.

Beyond the Known: Adversarial Autoencoders in Novelty Detection

In novelty detection, the goal is to decide if a new data point should be categorized as an inlier or an outlier, given a training dataset that primarily captures the inlier distribution. Recent approaches typically use deep encoder and decoder network frameworks to derive a reconstruction error, and employ this error either to determine a novelty score, or as the basis for a one-class classifier. In this research, we use a similar framework but with a lightweight deep network, and we adopt a probabilistic score with reconstruction error. Our methodology calculates the probability of whether the sample comes from the inlier distribution or not. This work makes two key contributions. The first is that we compute the novelty probability by linearizing the manifold that holds the structure of the inlier distribution. This allows us to interpret how the probability is distributed and can be determined in relation to the local coordinates of the manifold tangent space. The second contribution is that we improve the training protocol for the network. Our results indicate that our approach is effective at learning the target class, and it outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods on several benchmark datasets. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Depth Estimation using Weighted-loss and Transfer learning

Depth estimation from 2D images is a common computer vision task that has applications in many fields including autonomous vehicles, scene understanding and robotics. The accuracy of a supervised depth estimation method mainly relies on the chosen loss function, the model architecture, quality of data and performance metrics. In this study, we propose a simplified and adaptable approach to improve depth estimation accuracy using transfer learning and an optimized loss function. The optimized loss function is a combination of weighted losses to which enhance robustness and generalization: Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Edge Loss and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). We use a grid search and a random search method to find optimized weights for the losses, which leads to an improved model. We explore multiple encoder-decoder-based models including DenseNet121, DenseNet169, DenseNet201, and EfficientNet for the supervised depth estimation model on NYU Depth dataset v2. We observe that the EfficientNet model, pre-trained on ImageNet for classification when used as an encoder, with a simple upsampling decoder, gives the best results in terms of RSME, REL and log10: 0.386, 0.113 and 0.049, respectively. We also perform a qualitative analysis which illustrates that our model produces depth maps that closely resemble ground truth, even in cases where the ground truth is flawed. The results indicate significant improvements in accuracy and robustness, with EfficientNet being the most successful architecture. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Intelligent video-surveillance (IVS) is currently an active research field in computer vision and machine learning and provides useful tools for surveillance operators and forensic video investigators. Person re-identification (PReID) is one of the most critical problems in IVS, and it consists of recognizing whether or not an individual has already been observed over a camera in a network. Solutions to PReID have myriad applications including retrieval of video-sequences showing an individual of interest or even pedestrian tracking over multiple camera views. Different techniques have been proposed to increase the performance of PReID in the literature, and more recently researchers utilized deep neural networks (DNNs) given their compelling performance on similar vision problems and fast execution at test time. Given the importance and wide range of applications of re-identification solutions, our objective herein is to discuss the work carried out in the area and come up with a survey of state-of-the-art DNN models being used for this task. We present descriptions of each model along with their evaluation on a set of benchmark datasets. Finally, we show a detailed comparison among these models, which are followed by some discussions on their limitations that can work as guidelines for future research. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Business processes from many domains like manufacturing, healthcare, or business administration suffer from different amounts of uncertainty concerning the execution of individual activities and their order of occurrence. As long as a process is not entirely serial, i.e., there are no forks or decisions to be made along the process execution, we are - in the absence of exhaustive domain knowledge - confronted with the question whether and in what order activities should be executed or left out for a given case and a desired outcome. As the occurrence or non-occurrence of events has substantial implications regarding process key performance indicators like throughput times or scrap rate, there is ample need for assessing and modeling that process-inherent uncertainty. We propose a novel way of handling the uncertainty by leveraging the probabilistic mechanisms of Bayesian Networks to model processes from the structural and temporal information given in event log data and offer a comprehensive evaluation of uncertainty by modelling cases in their entirety. In a thorough analysis of well-established benchmark datasets, we show that our Process-aware Bayesian Network is capable of answering process queries concerned with any unknown process sequence regarding activities and/or attributes enhancing the explainability of processes. Our method can infer execution probabilities of activities at different stages and can query probabilities of certain process outcomes. The key benefit of the Process-aware Query System over existing approaches is the ability to deliver probabilistic, case-diagnostic information about the execution of activities via Bayesian inference.

Billions of suitcases and other belongings are checked every year in airport X-ray systems around the world. This process is very important because it involves the detection of potentially dangerous objects such as firearms and explosives. However, the image quality of x-ray screening devices needed to be improved. This article attempts to make a contribution to the field of improving the radiographic image of luggage by proposing a complete procedure for improving the image quality based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) image fusion followed by a noise suppression operation to obtain a good improvement of the fusion result. This article also presents a comparative analysis of five well-known image enhancement algorithm models, the evaluation is done using the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). The results show that the proposed system provides promising results compared to the other techniques tested, which proves that the proposed approach is very appropriate and recommended for easy / fast identification of threatening objects in a manual or automatic manner.

We propose new methods for in-domain and cross-domain Named Entity Recognition (NER) on historical data for Dutch and French. For the cross-domain case, we address domain shift by integrating unsupervised in-domain data via contextualized string embeddings;and OCR errors by injecting synthetic OCR errors into the source domain and address data centric domain adaptation. We propose a general approach to imitate OCR errors in arbitrary input data. Our cross-domain as well as our in-domain results outperform several strong baselines and establish state-of-the-art results.
