This paper deals with mathematical and numerical modeling of a heat sink based on phase change materials (PCM) and single and hybrid nanoparticles for cooling electronic components. It is a transient and two-dimensional model. Two electronic components are mounted in the center of the bottom wall occupied by a substrate playing the role of a motherboard. The system of transient equations is solved numerically by adopting the finite volume method. The enthalpy-porosity technique is used to model the phase change phenomenon. Based on the results found, it was found that the addition of hybrid nanoparticles instead of single nanoparticles is a promising solution for a long time using electronic components. This thermal behavior is due to the ability of the hybrid nanoparticles to enhance the effective thermal effusivity of the hybrid NePCM.

The classical theory of signal processing assumes that the designed IIR filters are continuous and have infinitely accurate coefficients. However, when developing filters for real-world digital signal processing tasks, it is necessary to take into account the finite precision of the coefficients representation, especially considering the fixed-point arithmetic. In this paper, we propose a new approach, which we call the interval size approach, making it easy to evaluate the actual digital filter response for various fixed-point arithmetic parameters. We provide Illustrative examples to demonstrate the frequency response bounds evolution as an order, cutoff frequency, and signal frequency are varying. We show that the interval size can be used as a well-suited accuracy factor of a digital filter.

In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

Plastic injection moulding is considered as one of the very challenging processes to obtain output with a good quality and low cost. This paper presents a case study of the deployment of Six Sigma in plastic injection moulding to improve the quality of the final product by eliminating major defects occurred using cost effective methods. The main objective is to identify the major quality problems and to eliminate root causes by adopting Six Sigma define, measure, analyse, improve and control (DMAIC) methodology. The proposed Six Sigma approach effectively integrates quantitative and qualitative tools such as statistical process control (SPC) charts, Pareto chart, histogram, Ishikawa diagram, measurement system analysis, hypothesis test and checklist to achieve the desired goal. The results reveal that the implementation of the proposed Six Sigma approach can reduce the rejection rate significantly. It is found that the quality of the final products is substantially improved in terms of sigma level which increased from 4.06 to 4.5 and the cost of poor quality (COPQ) is reduced by 45%. Over the past 50 years, public health in Latin America has walked through significant changes on social and economic aspects. Since the 90's, governments from the region have performed different health reforms to improve equity, effectiveness and geographical coverage. Although, positive results have been achieved historically, strong and sustainable public health strategies are still needed to guarantee quality service. In that sense, integration of novel devices for monitoring and alerting patients about their physical health stands as a promising option for improving Latin American healthcare systems by upgrading facilities to be able to attend patients remotely, avoid care units overcrowding, guarantee real-time supervision, operational cost reduction, rapid patient attention, and lower investment on expansion of existing areas. Healthcare wearable technology acceptance and adoption barriers were investigated. It was found that most wearables are developed and promoted in developed countries with no headquarters in Latin America. This situation decreasing interest for its adoption by Latin American governments due to poor technical support, high prices, and few distribution channels. Four main barriers for wearable technology adoption were identified as: i) critical data management, security and privacy issues, ii) unreliable results accuracy, iii) unaffordable technology for low-income groups, and iv) lack of clear regulations. Based on the adoption barriers, healthcare wearable technology challenges were identified and presented. The main challenges found were: access to health service, training and distribution of human resources in health, inequalities in health, and financial schemes for health systems. It can be concluded that smart wearables in the healthcare sector could be considered as part of the solution to guarantee proper quality service and coverage in remote areas where no service is currently offered. © 2018 AISTI.

With advancements in the science of detection and attribution studies, the influence of climate change over many events has now been quantified. Because of the rapidly increasing temperatures, vulnerable populations (adults older than 65 years, and children younger than one year of age) were exposed to 3·7 billion more heatwave days in 2021 than annually in 1986–2005 (indicator 1.1.2), and heat-related deaths increased by 68% between 2000–04 and 2017–21 (indicator 1.1.5), a death toll that was significantly exacerbated by the confluence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the local cooling and overall health benefits of urban greenspaces, only 277 (27%) of 1038 global urban centres were at least moderately green in 2021 (indicator 2.2.3), and the number of households with air conditioning increased by 66% from 2000 to 2020, a maladaptive response that worsens the energy crisis and further increases urban heat, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Every material has its own dielectric properties and it is also the same for water. In this research, dielectric properties measurement on water will be done to examine the water quality of drinking water whether it is safe to drink or not. Water quality in Malaysia, as well as access to water in general, is a major problem. The primary pollutants present in the water are oils, rubbish, suspended solids, sewage and toxic substances. These are consequences of untreated or only partially treated sewage caused by human activities. Thus, water quality in Malaysia is currently of some concern. The normal drinking water pH range mentioned in World Health Organization (WHO) and National Drinking Water Quality Standards (NDWQS) guidelines is between 6.5 and 8.5. The water may contain some residue even though the pH is in the range of 6 to 7.5 so it does not prove that the water is safe enough for drinking purpose. Thereby, the analysis about the water quality using the specific measuring instruments need to carry out to prove that the water in neutral pH may not be safe to drink as the pH does not prove the content of the water as clearly as dielectric properties. High Temperature Coaxial Probe as the dielectric properties measurement sensor will be used to provide better information compare to pH. The measurement parameters that had been used to determine the water quality is the dielectric constant. The results obtained from both pH and dielectric properties measurement values are been analyzed and compared and it shows that pH value for clean and contaminated water is at almost similar values while dielectric properties results show different for both clean and contaminated water.

This paper presents the findings of the workshop "New approaches to evacuation modelling", which took place on the 11th of June 2017 in Lund (Sweden)within the Symposium of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS). The workshop gathered international experts in the field of fire evacuation modelling from 19 different countries and was designed to build a dialogue between the fire evacuation modelling world and experts in areas outside of fire safety engineering. The contribution to fire evacuation modelling of five topics within research disciplines outside fire safety engineering (FSE)have been discussed during the workshop, namely 1)Psychology/Human Factors, 2)Sociology, 3)Applied Mathematics, 4)Transportation, 5)Dynamic Simulation and Biomechanics. The benefits of exchanging information between these two groups are highlighted here in light of the topic areas discussed and the feedback received by the evacuation modelling community during the workshop. This included the feasibility of development/application of modelling methods based on fields other than FSE as well as a discussion on their implementation strengths and limitations. Each subject area is here briefly presented and its links to fire evacuation modelling are discussed. The feedback received during the workshop is discussed through a set of insights which might be useful for the future developments of evacuation models for fire safety engineering. © 2019

Beacon: designing a portable device for self-administering a measure of critical flicker frequency

Critical flicker frequency (CFF) is the minimum frequency at which a flickering light source appears fused to an observer. Measuring CFF can support early diagnosis of minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), a condition affecting up to 80% of people with cirrhosis of the liver. However, adoption of CFF measurement in clinical practice has been hampered by the cost of a device for measuring CFF and the need for specialized training to administer the test. This paper presents Beacon, a portable, inexpensive device that enables people to measure their own critical flicker frequency. We adopt a mixed-methods approach to informing and evaluating the design of and potential opportunities for Beacon. We first report on a two-part formative study with 10 participants to evaluate the choice of certain parameters in the design of Beacon. We then report on a study of 41 healthy adults ranging from 18 to 99 years of age, finding that Beacon performs on par with Lafayette Flicker Fusion System, an established medical device, achieving a pearson correlation coefficient of 0.88. We finally report on a focus group with five hepatoligists who work with patients with cirrhosis of the liver, using our initial prototype development to examine their perspectives on potential opportunities and challenges in adoption of a device like Beacon. We discuss Beacon as an exploration of reframing critical flicker frequency measurement from a clinical screening tool into a self-administered self-tracking measure, thereby drawing upon and contributing to research in the health and personal informatics. © 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
