We have developed a circuit design which uses heterogeneous pipelines and latches to maximize hidable clock skew and jitter. With it, the hidable portion of the sum of clock skew and jitter is as large as a fourth of cycle time. In 0.15-µm CMOS LSIs of 500-MHz and 1- GHz based on our new design, performance was, respectively, 22% and 66% better than that of similar FF-based LSIs. We have also developed a 64-b floating-point multiplier that incorporates high-speed dual-rail domino logic into our design and have fabricated it using 0.25-µm CMOS process technology.

Organizations involved in developing, maintaining and enhancing software experiment constant changes in all the relevant domains and face increasing demands for improvements in cycle-time, cost-effectiveness and product quality. Software processs modeling is an effective tool in evaluating changes made to a software project or development organization and to help manage these changes. The relevant aspects of the multifaceted relationship between empirical studies and the building, deployment and usage of software process models are discussed.

Planning is an integral part of any work process. However, it is difficult to plan effectively if uncertainties cloud the planning horizon. Forecasts can help organizations by reducing some of the uncertainty, thereby enabling them to develop a more practical plan. Currently, there are many different kinds of forecasting techniques available, but no single technique works best in every situation. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a new intelligent forecasting technique which employs the concepts of neural network and fuzzy system. The neural network determines the output of the system based on the current state of the input parameters. The fuzzy-inference network evaluates the performance of the model by assessing the error and the derivative error of the system. If the error is high, the corrective action will be sent to the neural network to improve the system performance. To test the performance of the proposed model, it is used to approximate the nonlinear function in comparison to the most commonly used backpropagation neural network. The testing results demonstrate a very reliable performance of the proposed model.

System-level design requires behavioral models of its complex components in order to validate the designs, synthesize implementations and generate tests. Descriptions of these components are often only available as English descriptions. Developing behavioral models from natural language descriptions has been a tedious and time consuming task. The paper describes the semiautomatic generation of conceptual models from text and a simulator for these models. The conceptual modeling language is a knowledge representation notation (semantic hypergraphs), and simulation of these abstract descriptions based on the VHDL execution model is described. Simulation at the conceptual level avoids having to add the extraneous declarations and other syntactic artifacts necessary with more conventional description languages. These declarations not only take time, but also prejudice the implementation.

ModelMaker is a tool being developed to help modelers rapidly develop behavioral models from natural language descriptions to support the construction of virtual prototypes. This tool analyzes documents for behavioral patterns and constructs a component and signal index for search and retrieval of relevant text. The tool's interface features an edit window for HDL model development and a source window in which retrieved text and behaviors are displayed. Relevant source text can be retrieved by searches on entity and signal identifiers or on noun phrases automatically extracted from the source document. In addition the document can be automatically analyzed for behaviors which identify processes and events, as well as the devices and values which participate in them and, in some cases, how they interact. A natural agent/transaction modeling style is suggested for exploiting the extracted information.

The warship design process requires competition, compromise, and iteration. This is as true today as it was when David Taylor was a young officer in the Construction Corps at the turn of the century when the U.S. was struggling to develop a world class navy. The naval architects and ordnance engineers of his day wrestled over topside arrangements much as do their current counterparts. They tried to anticipate future threats, and they worried about cost because they were in an arm's race. These were total ship engineering issues, although the phrase had not yet been coined. What is different today! It is tempting to say that the short answer is technology. And, more importantly, the rate of change. Yet, an objective appraisal of David Taylor's era tells us that they too experienced an explosion in technology. Just the years 1900-1910 alone saw the introduction of dreadnought battleships, submarines, and aircraft. We are still trying to grapple with the implications of the last two warfare systems. History tells us that our predecessors got it right more often than wrong. Why? Because they recognized the need to change the way they did business in the face of new technologies and new threats.

Describes a tool to facilitate rapid modeling of devices from informal documents. ModelMaker analyzes and indexes the source document for the noun phrases and identifiers it contains. When the engineer needs information on pins, components or other indexed features for behavioral modeling, ModelMaker returns all relevant text from the source document. The returned information can be ordered sequentially or on its behavioral or structural content. The VHDL model under development can be edited to add behavioral code and to insert source document fragments as comments. The initial VHDL model is derived from a block diagram of the source document using a schematic capture tool. ModelMaker is currently being extended to automatically extract behavioral information for the engineer.
