Real-time procedural shading was once seen as a distant dream. When the first version of this course was offered four years ago, real-time shading was possible, but only with one-of-a-kind hardware or by combining the effects of tens to hundreds of rendering passes. Today, almost every new computer comes with graphics hardware capable of interactively executing shaders of thousands to tens of thousands of instructions. This course has been redesigned to address today's real-time shading capabilities and to provide more practical information for practitioners. The morning sessions cover the more advanced technical aspects of creating a shading system. The afternoon sessions cover practical details of real-time shading use, including an overview of recently developed algorithms that run well on today's shading hardware and presentations on the latest hardware developments from several leading hardware vendors. The course concludes with the popular panel-style question and answer session, where participants can ask questions of any presenter or suggest topics of discussion.

A model-based flow control strategy is proposed for the suppression of vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder. The control design is based on a hierarchy of low-dimensional Galerkin models of the cylinder wake. These models are constructed from a Karhunen-Loève decomposition of a simulation without actuation. The key enablers are an additional physical mode in the Karhunen-Loève approximation and an energy-based control which respects the regime of model validity. The relationship is investigated between test data compression and power dissipation during scan testing. It is shown how combining a proposed symmetric coding scheme and a weighted scan latch reordering (W-SLR) algorithm allows efficient exploration of the scan power and test data compression solution space. This is achieved by reducing and balancing the transition activity in the scan-in and scan-out sequences. This will impact the test data compression, which depends only on the scan-in sequence, and the overall scan power dissipation, which depends on the scan-in and scan-out sequences. Trade-off analysis using ISCAS89 benchmark circuits shows that, by employing the proposed symmetric coding scheme and varying a weighting parameter in the W-SLR algorithm, the embedded core designer can easily and explicitly control the scan power and volume of test data. The proposed asymmetric/symmetric code transformation is equally applicable to (and thus it maintains its benefits) any asymmetric 'run length' coding scheme.

Introduces a statistical speech production model. The model synthesizes natural speech by modeling some key dynamic properties of vocal articulators in a linear/nonlinear state-space framework. The goal-oriented movements of the articulators (tongue tip, tongue dorsum, upper lip, lower lip, and jaw) are described in a linear dynamic state equation. The resulting articulatory trajectories, combined with the effects of the velum and larynx, are nonlinearly mapped into the acoustic feature space (MFCCs). The key challenges in this model are the development of a nonlinear parameter estimation methodology, and the incorporation of appropriate prior assumptions to assert in the articulatory dynamic structure. Such a model can also be directly applied to speech recognition to better account for coarticulation and phonetic reduction phenomena with considerably fewer parameters than HMM based approaches.

The pulsed Nd:YAG laser is the most commonly used type of solid-state laser in many fields. In material processing and medical treatment, the power density control of a laser beam considered to be significant, which depends on the flashlamp current pulse width and pulse repetition rate. For general laser power supply to control the laser power density, the secondary of the power transformer is connected to the rectifier and filter capacitor. The output of a rectifier is applied to a switching element in the secondary of the transformer. So power supply is complicated and the loss of switching is considerable. In addition, according to increasing pulse repetition rate, charged energy of the energy-storage capacitor bank is not transferred sufficiently to a flashlamp, and laser output efficiency decreases. In this study, we have proposed a power supply in which the SCR was turned on at the zero point of input AC voltage by the method of zero crossing control (ZCC). As a result of that, the new power supply employed ZCC are simple and compact in design. Laser output efficiency increased by 3.5% other than conventional power supply (SCADC), when a repetition rate was increased by 10 pps. For 60 pps, efficiency was increased by about 20%.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.

The increasing parallelisation of development processes as well as the ongoing trends towards virtual product development and outsourcing of development activities strengthen the need for 3D co-operative design via communication networks. Regarding the field of CAx, none of the existing systems meets all the requirements of very complex process chain. This leads to a tremendous need for the integration of heterogeneous CAx systems. Therefore, MACAO, a platform-independent client for a distributed CAx component system, the so-called ANICA CAx object bus, is presented. The MACAO client is able to access objects and functions provided by different CAx servers distributed over a communication network. Thus, MACAO is a new solution for engineering design and visualisation in shared distributed virtual environments. This paper describes the underlying concepts, the actual prototype implementation, as well as possible application scenarios in the area of co-operative design and visualisation.

Forecasts are the basis for planning and decision making. The more accurate the organization's forecasts, the better prepared it will be to take advantage of future opportunities and to reduce potential risks. Thus, it should come as no surprise that there is a tremendous number of statistical prediction algorithms already in existence. However, most of them are useful only when the time series exhibit little trend or seasonal variations but a great deal of irregular or random variation. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to propose a new intelligent forecasting technique which is constructed by combining n-trained neural-based network together. The experimental results based on simulated data show a significant improvement in forecasting accuracy.

This paper is concerned with the patterns of joint angles of the lower extremity of the body (hip, knee and ankle angle) during the termination of human gait. The termination of human gait is defined as the transition from a steady-state gait to a quiet standing posture. The transition between these two states has not been extensively studied and defined. There appears to be a critical period in the gait cycle in which the decision to terminate the gait or to continue to take an additional step must be made.

We have developed a circuit design which uses heterogeneous pipelines and latches to maximize hidable clock skew and jitter. With it, the hidable portion of the sum of clock skew and jitter is as large as a fourth of cycle time. In 0.15-μm CMOS LSIs of 500-MHz and 1- GHz based on our new design, performance was, respectively, 22% and 66% better than that of similar FF-based LSIs. We have also developed a 64-b floating-point multiplier that incorporates high-speed dual-rail domino logic into our design and have fabricated it using 0.25-μm CMOS process technology. © 2000 Non IEEE.
