Generative models have attracted considerable attention for speech separation tasks, and among these, diffusion-based methods are being explored. Despite the notable success of diffusion techniques in generation tasks, their adaptation to speech separation has encountered challenges, notably slow convergence and suboptimal separation outcomes. To address these issues and enhance the efficacy of diffusion-based speech separation, we introduce EDSep, a novel single-channel method grounded in score matching via stochastic differential equation (SDE). This method enhances generative modeling for speech source separation by optimizing training and sampling efficiency. Specifically, a novel denoiser function is proposed to approximate data distributions, which obtains ideal denoiser outputs. Additionally, a stochastic sampler is carefully designed to resolve the reverse SDE during the sampling process, gradually separating speech from mixtures. Extensive experiments on databases such as WSJ0-2mix, LRS2-2mix, and VoxCeleb2-2mix demonstrate our proposed method's superior performance over existing diffusion and discriminative models, validating its efficacy. © 2025 IEEE.

Advances in non-invasive neuroimaging, such as structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), have en abled the construction of structural brain networks (SBNs), allowing in vivo mapping of anatomical connec tions. This study investigates brain network structural differences linked to different intelligence levels in children by individual morphometric similarity networks (MSNs) derived from sMRI data. Through group and individual-level analyses, we aim to uncover key topological features associated with cognitive perfor mance and to identify a suitable connection density for SBN analysis. Connection density strongly affects global and nodal topological features, with a range of p = 0.05 to 0.15 recommended for stable and optimal results. Gifted individuals exhibit stronger intra-hemispheric and intra-modular connectivity, a more balanced distribution of left-to-right intra-hemispheric connections, and lower mean versatility, supporting efficient and stable cognitive processing. Moreover, anatomical modularity analyses based on von Economo indicate that higher cognitive performance is linked to enhanced connectivity in specific areas (such as secondary sensory area, motor to association area and secondary sensory to limbic area), alongside selective reduction in cer tain modular connections (such as motor to insular area, association to secondary sensory area and motor to secondary sensory area). Furthermore, topological features, including participation coefficient and local effi ciency, are linked to cognitive performance. These findings provide valuable insights into the SBNs underlying cognitive levels in children. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

TPE for JPEG images with Dynamic M-ary Decomposition and Adaptive Threshold Constraints

Traditional JPEG image encryption that prioritizes solely confidentiality fails to account for the pressing usability requirements of cloud-based environments, thus boosting the boom in thumbnail-preserving encryption (TPE) to balance image privacy and usability. However, existing TPE schemes for JPEG images face numerous challenges, such as insufficient security, inability to achieve lossless decryption, and high file extension. To address these challenges, we propose a TPE scheme based on dynamic M-ary decomposition and adaptive threshold constraints (TPE-MDTC). First, the valid ranges of quantized DC coefficients for JPEG images are determined. Then, a sum-preserving encryption method for quantized DC coefficients with compliance threshold constraints is designed using the bit-plane permutation to preserve thumbnails with high accuracy. Next, the introduction of dynamic M-ary decomposition effectively changes bit statistical characteristics preserved by bit-plane permutation, enhancing the ciphertext security. Finally, a quantized AC encryption method with RV (Run/Value) pair global permutation is proposed, effectively modifying the unit block features, thereby significantly improving the security and attack resistance of encrypted images. Experimental results show that the proposed TPE-MDTC scheme can reconstruct the original JPEG images without loss, and the generated ciphertext images exhibit significant advantages over previous schemes regarding file extension and security. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

As the deadliest form of pollution, air pollution had a prolonged severe damage to the human health and life safety of nearly 99% of the world's population. Facing to the problem that billions of tons of pollutants discharged into the air per year by industrial activities, this paper proposed a novel image-based air pollution monitor (IAPM) by incorporating local and global information in the self-adaptive multiscale transform domain, so as to achieve the timely and effective leakage detection of typical air pollutants from a single image. To be specific, this paper first developed a screen-shaped module according to two significant findings in visual neuroscience, which include the high sensitivity of human eyes to horizontal and vertical stimuli and the center-surround inhibition, by designing and fusing the square module, horizontal strip module and vertical strip module parallelly for simulating the behaviour of human eyes to extract local features. Second, the learnable weights and proportional mapping were applied to incorporate the screen-shaped module and lightweight vision transformer as backbone, towards more richly exploiting and fusing local and global information just as the way a brain perceives external stimuli. Third, a new self-adaptive multiscale transform domain method was devised based on two motivations from the visual characteristics of multiscale perception and the brain characteristics of self-adaptive domain transform to modify the backbone by using the operations of pooling and pointwise convolution. Extensive experiments implemented on the datasets of carbon particulate matters and ethylene leakage confirmed the superior monitoring performance of the proposed IAPM model beyond the state-of-the-art (SOTA) peers by an accuracy gain of about 4%. Furthermore, the proposed IAPM model only required 0.089 GFLOPs and 0.15 million model parameters, remarkably outperforming SOTA competitors in computational efficiency and storage resources. © 1999-2

Most cell types are mechanosensitive, their activities such as differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis, can be influenced by the mechanical environment through mechanical stimulation. In three dimensional (3D) mechanobiological in vitro studies, the porous structure of scaffold controls the local mechanical environment that applied to cells. Many previous studies have focused on the topological design of homogeneous scaffold struts. However, the impact of scaffold inhomogeneity on the mechanical environment, which is essential in mechanobiological application (e.g. for multi-cells co-culture), remains elusive. In this study, we use a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach together with data analysis to study the influence of a porosity gradient (10 %–30 % porosity difference) on the local and global mechanical environment (wall shear stress - WSS) within the commonly used structures of triple periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS). In addition, the anisotropy of internal WSS and scaffold permeability caused by the porosity gradient is investigated. It is found that the influence of anisotropy on the average WSS and permeability is up to 11 % and 31 %, respectively. These results, as theoretical references will be useful to tissue engineers and mechanobiologists for scaffold design and in vitro experiment planning such as integrated use of graded scaffold and bioreactors for specific cell types. © 2025 The Authors

TCP ensures reliable transmission through its stateful implementation and remains crucial today. TCP performance profiling is essential for tasks like diagnosing network performance problems, optimizing transmission performance, and developing new TCP variants, etc. Existing profiling methods lack enough attention to TCP state transition to provide detailed insights on TCP performance. Thus, we build TcpSight, a tool focusing on TCP state transition throughout connection lifetimes. TcpSight conducts stateful analysis by capturing key events using an efficient per-connection lock-free data management mechanism. Besides, TcpSight enhances profiling by integrating application layer information collected from the TCP stack. With the profiling results, users can identify the culprit of TCP performance degradation, and evaluate the performance of TCP algorithms. We design optional modules and filtering mechanisms to reduce TcpSights overhead. Our evaluation presents that TcpSight incurs an additional CPU consumption of about 16.6% (without filtering) and 10.6% (with filtering) when the server's load is 55.7%, and generates storage consumption about 1.88 KB per connection on average. We also give application cases of TcpSight and the deployment experiences in Alibaba Cloud. TcpSight helps in revealing meaningful findings and insights into exploiting TCP in the production deployment. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Variational mode decomposition (VMD) and its extensions like Multivariate VMD (MVMD) decompose signals into ensembles of band-limited modes with narrow central frequencies. These methods utilize Fourier transformations to shift signals between time and frequency domains. However, since Fourier transformations span the entire time-domain signal, they are suboptimal for non-stationary time series. We introduce Short-Time Variational Mode Decomposition (STVMD), an innovative extension of the VMD algorithm that incorporates the Short-Time Fourier transform (STFT) to minimize the impact of local disturbances. STVMD segments signals into short time windows, converting these segments into the frequency domain. It then formulates a variational optimization problem to extract band-limited modes representing the windowed data. The optimization aims to minimize the sum of the bandwidths of these modes across the windowed data, extending the cost functions used in VMD and MVMD. Solutions are derived using the alternating direction method of multipliers, ensuring the extraction of modes with narrow bandwidths. STVMD is divided into dynamic and non-dynamic types, depending on whether the central frequencies vary with time. Our experiments show that non-dynamic STVMD is comparable to VMD with properly sized time windows, while dynamic STVMD better accommodates non-stationary signals, evidenced by reduced mode function errors and tracking of dynamic central frequencies. The rapid proliferation of smart home appliances has highlighted the growing need for enhanced interoperability across diverse IoT ecosystems. The Matter protocol, emerging as a global standard for smart home devices, provides a unified communication framework, while the W3C Web of Things (WoT) framework facilitates the seamless integration of IoT devices through web technologies. Despite the potential benefits, the interworking between Matter and WoT remains an underexplored area, which, if addressed, could substantially improve the accessibility and interoperability of smart home systems. This paper introduces a novel approach for integrating Matter-enabled devices with the W3C Web of Things, ultimately enabling Web Access as a Service for Matter devices. We propose a comprehensive solution that makes Matter devices discoverable and interactable within the WoT ecosystem. The proposed solution comprises: (1) a Thing model for Matter and an adaptive translation algorithm that maps Matter device specifications to WoT concepts, (2) a Matter controller that exposes Matter devices as WoT Thing Descriptions, enabling bi-directional communication between Matter devices and WoT-based applications, and (3) an extensive evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the integration. The results indicate that the proposed solution is both feasible and practical for deployment in real-world settings. This approach lays the groundwork for a more unified and user-friendly smart home experience, thereby advancing the potential for smart home ecosystems in broader, cross-domain contexts. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
