The Influence of Ceramic Coating on Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviour of X17CrNi15-2 Stainless Steel

Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on the SEN B3 precracked specimens, with dimensions in accordance with ISO 12108 requirements. The specimens were made of martensitic stainless steel, X17CrNi15-2, and some of them were modified by the ceramic coating deposition surface treatment. The effects of ceramic coating, on the fatigue crack growth behaviour of hollow shaft specimens, were experimentally investigated. Fatigue crack growth rates, da/dN, were characterised, using the power law relationship between da/dN (in mm/cycle) and the stress intensity factor range, ΔK (in MPa∙m0.5). The two constants of the correlation are 7.9768 × 10−9 and 2.8107 for the parent material, and those for the coated material are 2.4391 × 10−9 and 3.1990, respectively. Microstructural analyses were carried out on the tested specimens, which shows that the maximum hardness of the ceramic coating is higher than that of substrate by a factor of ~3.2. The dimple fracture dominates the final fracture mechanism for the parent material, and the combination of fatigue, ductile fracture and cleavage dominates the final fracture mechanism for the coated material, based on the SEM analyses. EDS tests’ results reveal that the parent material specimen shows higher levels of C at matrix regions along with Fe- and O-rich regions, compared with the coated material specimen.

Dimensionality is an important aspect for analyzing and understanding (high-dimensional) data. In their 2006 ICDM paper Tatti et al. answered the question for a (interpretable) dimension of binary data tables by introducing a normalized correlation dimension. In the present work we revisit their results and contrast them with a concept based notion of intrinsic dimension (ID) recently introduced for geometric data sets. To do this, we present a novel approximation for this ID that is based on computing concepts only up to a certain support value. This paper discusses the H consensus problem of leader-follower multi-agent systems. The controller for each agent is crafted to utilize comprehensive information from all connected agents, while an innovative event-triggered strategy is incorporated to minimize communication costs. Based on the Lyapunov function theory, an H controller is proposed that can ensure both system stability and a prescribed disturbance attenuation level γ. Finally, a numerical example validated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we propose an image watermarking algorithm using the discrete multiwavelet transform. The watermark insertion and watermark detection are based on the techniques for the DWT-based image watermarking proposed by Dugad et al. In our method, the watermark is embedded to the multiwavelet transform coefficients larger than some threshold values. We have developed an optimization technique using the genetic algorithm to search for optimal threshold values and the strength of the watermark to improve the quality of watermarked image and robustness of the watermark. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields watermark which is invisible to human eyes and robust to various image manipulations. We then compare our experimental results with the results of previous work using various test images.

We propose an efficient method for automatically extracting express waybills from parcel images, which is challenging due to varied resolution of parcel images, arbitrary direction of waybills and different information filled by senders. To address these challenges, logo matching is employed to extract the waybills. We begin by extracting scale-invariant feature-transformation (SIFT) keypoints from both the reference logo image and a parcel image, and matching them subject to a consistent projective transformation (homography) by using random sample consensus (RANSAC). Once the homography matrix is computed, we extract the waybill of parcel image by mapping all pixels from a standard waybill image to the parcel image. Experimental results on test datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In range-based pose tracking, the translation and rotation of an object with respect to a global coordinate system has to be estimated. The ranges are measured between the target and the global frame. In this paper, an intelligent decomposition is introduced in order to reduce the computational effort for pose tracking. Usually, decomposition procedures only exploit conditionally linear models. In this paper, this principle is generalized to conditionally integrable substructures and applied to pose tracking. Due to a modified measurement equation, parts of the problem can even be solved analytically.

Dr Hein's interest in research work is focused on mathematical modelling and field theory with emphasis at present on microwave system analysis and design. He is a member of the International Association of Mathematical Physics IAMP.

A propagator integral interpretation for general TLM processes is presented and applied to discretized Maxwell's equations. The approach provides exact algebraic solutions of finite difference equations along a quite universal scheme. Specifically, Johns's process based on the symmetrical condensed node is reconstructed and generalized as a clear-cut FD algorithm. The fields computed are exact time-domain solutions of the FD equations, provided that total voltages and currents are evaluated and stub quantities are not externally excited. Losses are very naturally incorporated into the TLM algorithm. The structural similarity of the TLM process (properly operated) with the propagator integral appears just as fundamental as general and should have further applications.

Topic shift detection aims to identify whether there is a change in the current topic of conversation or if a change is needed. The study found previous work did not evaluate the performance of large language models like ChatGPT on the task of topic shift. Therefore, this paper's main task and innovation lie in analyzing ChatGPT's performance on topic shift detection. To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we conducted topic shift detection tasks on ChatGPT from three aspects: single utterances, adjacent utterances, and contextual levels. Additionally, to gauge the performance of large language models, we conducted experiments on multiple small-scale models and compared the results of the two models. Experimental results on the publicly available English TIAGE dataset showed that small-scale models exhibited lower recall in all three aspects, while ChatGPT performed better in the recall. This suggests that compared to small-scale models, large models are more capable of accurately detecting topic shifts. However, large models also exhibited lower precision, indicating that while ChatGPT can recognize content differences in utterances, its judgment on whether these different contents belong to the same topic is poor. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper we propose an approach aiming to integrate human-computer interaction (HCI) aspects in decision support system (DSS) development. We propose an approach combining two methods: one issued from software engineering field (the rational unified process) and the other one from the HCI field (the U model). We have tested our approach in a DSS set up in the healthcare domain: the supervision of nosocomial infections in an intensive care unit.

In range-based localization, the trajectory of a mobile object is estimated based on noisy range measurements between the object and known landmarks. In order to deal with this uncertain information, a Bayesian state estimator is presented, which exploits optimal stochastic linearization. Compared to standard state estimators like the Extended or Unscented Kalman Filter, where a point-based Gaussian approximation is used, the proposed approach considers the entire Gaussian density for linearization. By employing the common assumption that the state and measurements are jointly Gaussian, the linearization can be calculated in closed form and thus analytic expressions for the range-based localization problem can be derived.
